1.
edit- I assume you mean solfege.
Well kinda. Solfège is the sight singing training thing (like the Sound of Music crap) isn't it? I was originally taught to recognise intervals using that (and am trying to redevelop the skill) but outside of sight singing, I've never seen anyone use the terms as actual note names even though I'm told in some systems Do is "fixed" to C and not simply the root note. Maybe they were only ever used for sight singing - I don't know. Did you mean you trhink solfège itself is a little redundant?
2. Would be packed in ten minutes. Only thing I'd have to worry about is my job - they'd quite possibly sue me for not working a notice period but other than that I'd have nothing to deal with. No ties really.
3. Too big a company to even find the guy responsible let alone bribe him. God I hate having sold my soul to corporate america sometimes. Looks like its not related to the BC server/site at all; heard a few other people complaining about blocked sites this morning. They've also done a cracking job of blocking access to web proxy sites like hidemyass.com. Someone is getting paid too much to ensure the rest of us can't have five minutes of fun during the working day.
4. Cool, cheers guys. I'm glad its not just me who hadn't used them before then.
5. Just wondering if anything changed overnight here. Come into work this morning to find BC is now blocked by our proxy server. Chances are they've updated something here to do it, but I'm clinging at straws hoping it's because of a change to the site that can be put back. Going to be a long day. As you may have noticed, I have my way around it but its not a friendly browsing experience.
6.
By Italian do you mean quavers, crotchets etc?
Whoops no, but I see where you came from there. I should have been more specific. I mean like sol diesis instead of G sharp.
7. Are you sure you need to? Edit: Usually easier just to record the bass input and leave Amplitube on as a live effect - unless you need to do something weird with it or save processing power. Anyway. Erm... I can't remember exactly with Reaper, but look for something like "bounce to clip" as an option for the track (probably Amplitube's output track). Might be called "render" or "freeze" (although that usually refers to something slightly different) Edit (again): Can't remember if you would have Amplitube output tracks with Reaper.. so it might be a render effect option on the input (bass audio) track.
8. The other current music theory thread got me thinking. I vaguely know the note names in Italian, but it occurred to me that I've never seen them used. It never came up when I studied classical so I'm wondering if its now just a posh orchestra thing (never played in one)? Do Italian people use them as common place? I know other languages have different names for the notes, but this is music so let's face it, if its not in English or Italian (with the occasional German forgiven) then noone really cares.
9. Let's start at the very beginning A very good place to start When you read you begin with A-B-C When you sing you begin with do-re-mi i.e. scales and intervals
10. My usual newsagents near work normally has it in as soon as its available - I was in there this morning, BGM wasn't.

12. Two very valid and important points there.
13.
If you use the gaffatape strip method don't the plectrums* get all sticky?
That'd be an added bonus for me. I've never been good at holding a plectrum, have contemplated glue but that might be awkward when I go for a smoke.
14. I tried it once - didn't get anywhere with it. But it is reasonably well accepted. Have you looked at Toontrack's EZDrummer also? Or is it particularly the idea of the software inventing the drum rhythms that you like?
15.
I want to start recording our practice sessions. Recorders seem to go from £100 up to £1000 +, and 8 tracks only record 2 tracks at a time. Looking for something to record 1 or 2, or 4 or more tracks at a time, and play them back and record more. Any ideas ?
Very good laptop + high spec audio interface + good sequencer software. Are you *sure* you need 4 simultaenous inputs? Having multiple tracks is great if you're editing, but unless you do that then for a practice session it seems like you're just adding complexity. You could record it all as one track if you plugged everything in to a little mixer and balanced the levels there. Just means you couldn't make changes later. Even take the mixer's output to something basic like a minidisc recorder etc.
16. If this is a one-off, then it might be easier to do it in a studio, where someone can mix it and maybe have it mastered. Edit: Ok, possibly not valid if you're not talking real world instruments. I made a boob here. If you look at the other threads here on computer audio / audio interface / home recording etc. you'll see it can take a bit of starting and usually requires some outlay. To quickly answer your questions though: If you can get away with midi programming everything (and using vsts / sample libraries etc. for the sounds) then all you'll need is a sequencer (e.g. Sonar, Cubase, Ableton Live, Reaper etc.) and some virtual instruments. Otherwise expect to have to buy a proper audio interface (NOT a soundcard) and possibly/probably some studio monitors. Edit: Guessing your laptop doesn't have a midi port - so you'll at least need to fork out on a midi interface, but most audio interfaces have one built in btw. Then you'll need to try and learn what you're doing, including the horrible bit at the end when you've done your backing track but it needs mastering for that professional finish. White man's magic. Easier to pay someone who knows what they're doing there.
17. Bit of a piece of string question, but what kind of money are you looking at for a custom bass these days?
18. I have some basic knowledge of drumming (from having to midi program a few loops etc. over the years) but at this point, have no idea how a bassist locks in with a drummer. My ears can't seem to pick this up properly yet. Anything been written on this interplay to point me in the right direction?
19. Is this the Avril Lavigne covers project you told me about? I say go for it.
20. Have you tried speaking directly to the shop's manager/owner? Explain to him that you know your rights and you don't have to wait forever for them to repair it; and as they have been so unreasonable and unsupportive, you want your money back now or you will take it to court. Even if I still wanted the bass, I wouldn't accept it on principal. If you buy a bass new from a shop, you expect it to be perfect out of the box, with an after-sales service that delivers peace of mind. I don't know at what point you'd be ok with naming and shaming these cowboys, but when the time comes I can't wait to hear who they are.
21. That is pretty special. One of the best videos I've seen this year.
22. Ah, but remember why you ended up back in a band again. Hope its nothing too serious.
23.
Maybe some people are less trustworthy however I assume all us northern bunch could vouch for the trustworthy members and likewise.
Maybe that could work. Having met some of the north east BCers, there are those that inspire trust by being such nice guys and there are those who you just wouldn't want to piss off (who also seem nice chaps btw). Edt: Unusually, for me, I can't quite work out what my opinion is yet.
24. It's a nice idea - but a very scary one as it relies so much on trust with very little opportunity to fix problems. If I buy something from someone on here, there's usually a record of a monetary transaction. I can go someway to prove I paid for it. If the seller is wise, he uses recorded delivery so can go someway towards proving he sent it. Things can go wrong but its a legal argument between two people with a certain amount of traceability in there. Let's say the seller gives it to another BC member to bring up north. That guy drops it off at your house (for example) and I come by to pick it up. Sounds wonderful. But.. what if I never receive it from you (or claim I haven't)? What if you never receive it from the traveller (or tell me that)? What if he never gets it from the seller (or says so)? How could we really settle this? I'm not actually saying anyone would abuse it - but if I was involved as either a buyer/seller/traveller/temp storage fellow, I'd be seriously worried about something happening and fingers getting pointed my way.
25. Mac, you should write for BGM.
