  1. There's always someone who says clean is best and bass doesn't need or shouldn't have any distortion. They seem to forget music isn't right or wrong. What works for one person may not work for another. For every bassist who loves a crystal clear clean sound, there's another in a metal band who needs a heavily overdriven sound to work with the filthy guitars. In a band you have to abandon your ideal isolated tone in favour of what works best with your band. Lemmy is a perfect example of this, his bass sounds awful in isolation but in the mix it's spot on.
  2. My clean sound had the valve drive on my Ashdown ABM600 at near max plus the clean/dirty channels blended on my le bass preamp pedal but with the gain pretty high on both channels. My dirty sound added a Darkglass B3K or Vintage Microtubes on to of that.
  3. Grade 2's new self titled album and its an absolute blinder. Some of the bass playing is really good. Highly recommended
  4. Bulls On Parade - Rage Against The Machine
  5. Planet's Collide - Crowbar Heavy metal genius
  6. It's worth bugger all, maybe even less but my daughter has an early 90's Peavey international. I was just curious as to whether that would be considered vintage. It's around 30 years old now. It's actually quite nice to play but pretty much worthless to anyone but my daughter.
  7. What would define a bass as vintage? Is it purely age or is there more to it than that?
  8. What amp are you using? I'm just thinking if you found both instruments underwhelming, it could be the amp that's the problem.
  9. I'd tune the 5 string down as well. I assume you're playing metal and there will be lots of playing riffs off open string which gets really tricky if you're not in the right tuning. Playing something like Reign In Blood would probably be impossible if you aren't in the same tuning as the guitar or have 8 fingers 10 inches long
  10. A little of each. I only have one bass and one amp but the amp is 600w with a 4x10 so maybe I should downsize although smaller cabs seem to be more expensive than big ones
  11. Well I finished with the band with two gigs on consecutive nights, the first was brilliant, couldn't have been better. The second had terrible sound, we were the wrong support act so the audience weren't in to us and I got terrible hand cramp. Driving home I was glad I wouldn't have to do it again. I put all my gear up for sale and couldn't wait for it to go then I got enquiries and got doubts about giving up. I'm confused
  12. Holywood Swinging - Kool And The Gang
  13. Ashdown ABM 600. Really great condition. Everything works as it should.
  14. That'll be the cab, the Terror isn't a great amp. Tons of power but a horrible preamp. I've met a few bassists who use them and just run an external preamp in to the effects return to bypass the Orange preamp.
  15. Just saw this video. I can't play this song with two hands and I've tried plenty of times. This is seriously impressive
