Is pitch perception a universal human phenomenon?
Nail Soup replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
But would you be letting her hear that c and d together sound tense , or teaching her that c and d sound tense? Other words natural or cultural? -
Like many on here, I make a net loss from playing music, so Covid has increased my musical bank balance. The paid work I do is for a salary, and doesn't look to be affected. I didn't get furloughed, but did have to take a couple of weeks unpaid leave. So I got off pretty lightly, am not complaining and counting myself lucky. Touch wood., obviously!

Inspired by an exchange about live UFO albums in the "What are you listening to" thread. We all know what the great live albums are....but what tricks, cheats and general shenanigans have been used to make live albums? Fake crowd noise, over dubs... tell us what you know..... both specific albums and general techniques. And any legit methods used to make live albums I guess!

To bring it back (closer) to topic............ I got chatting to a bloke at an open mike a few years ago (not where I live, it was the Portsmouth area) and he said he was the drummer in a Shadows live karaoke band. Basically there are three in the band - Drums, Bass, Rhythm Guitar, and punters take turns to be Hank. Sounded good fun, he said there are lots of red strats to be seen! Didn't sound like they did a lot of gigs, just Shadows conventions and the like I think.

Was reminded of this one today... not a reggae artist, but this tune qualifies IMO: M.I.A. - It Takes A Muscle

That first piece reminded me of this obscure classic: Athletico Spizz 80 - Clocks Are Big -
Did your parents/family help with your musical life?
Nail Soup replied to Nail Soup's topic in General Discussion
Just thinking back... as I have already posted my parents had no knowledge to pass on, but tried really hard to support. In most ways that was great. However, when it came to gear it didn't work out so well. My dad had a habit of buying kind of sub-standard gear - bikes, cars, TV etc. We couldn't afford expensive stuff, but he always managed to get something much cheaper than we could afford 😄! Applied to musical instrument too ☹️. So although he tried, I only got some playable gear when I started buying my own! -

I like Dummy, but love the third album '3'. And I would like to again plug Geoff Barrows other band 'Beak'. Just don't call them a side project in Geoff's earshot😄! -
Is pitch perception a universal human phenomenon?

I have wondered the same thing myself. Because for example an octave has a mathematical basis (double/ or half) I just assume that there is no cultural component to it. But maybe I'm wrong. However.............I remember when I was first learning bass someone was playing an E chord and said to play an E along with it on bass. I asked which one (i had learned the fretboard) - a low E or high E and they said either - they are [harmonically] the same. Up till then (well the short time from when I first picked up a bass) I thought of them as different because one sounds high and one low.... never saw (heard) that they had something in common. -
What do you mean?

I loved "From Enslavement to Obliteration" when it came out and sinse.... and even included it in my top 10 all time favourite albums on Facebook a couple of years ago. But after that I lost touch with ND.... until I went into a youtube ND rabbit hole a year or so ago and checked out what they had been up to all these years. Was pleasantly surprised to see that they had managed to vary the sound over time, but still be Napalm Death.... and all good quality too! Now another good un! Might give FETO a listen tonght!

The ongoing thread on my attempt at transferring 4-track cassttes to audio files has included a couple of nice examples! However, I have been saved by the basschatters before any harm done . Thanks!!

I use the presets on for example the compressors in my DAW. I have no idea how to use a compressor otherwise. A few other more technical things would be the same. Apart from that, most effects etc I'd rather find my own settings.

Made me think of this...... a song featuring the word 'mastodon' (I guess there are not many)... and it has two basses so ideal for basschat 😀 The Stranglers "Dead Los Angeles" -

Regarding a four channel audio interface, I found this one from Behringer. Sells cheap, like a lot of Beheringer stuff - e.g £68 plus postage. Look like it would meet my needs for the cassettes, and could double as a little mixer to feed into e.g powered PA speaker etc. If I'm reading the spec correctly. Or I could sell it afterwards. https://www.behringer.com/behringer/product?modelCode=P0ALM Advice/opinions welcome. -

Listening to a 6 Music kind-of-documentory .... it's a show of the all time John Peel Festive Fifty... condensed into one hour... a clip of the music and a clip of Peel for each song. Based on a all-time FF he did in his later years. Lots of good stuff in there (so far.. I'm about halfway) although, as Peel himself laments, a bit predictable........ but here is the opener from the show. -
I’m not buying his story either😃!

Siouxsie and the Banshees 1978 debut album "The Scream". Sample track - Metal Postcard Drummer Kenny Morris was not a technically gifted drummer like his successor (Budgie), but did come up with simple but effective but effective drum parts.... like this. Guitarist John McKay was not such a technically gifted guitarist as his (eventual) successor (John McGeoch) but did some great stuff and had one of the all-time great guitar sounds IMO. Of course they did great stuff with great drumming in the Budgie era too! -

Great song.... however in my case it met my already high expectations😄! -
Good day today..... day off work, long country/canal cycle ride... dinner on the canal bank followed by a canal-side lie down in the sun with Augustus Pablo in the earphones 😀.

Like it, definitely my bag.... any idea if he's a dubbing up existing songs or recording from scratch or what?

4-Track Cassette Transfer - A Diary [**Paused**]

I was a bit niaive back then, didn't know much about noise reduction..... probably associated Dolby with Audiophiles etc to be honest. I was always working alone really...... 4-track was a solo activity, never collaborated so even less chance to exchange ideas about NR and so on. And no internet or Basschat either! In practice I only ever did one bounce per song, and tape noise was not the limiting factor in my recordings anyway! Some of the recordings ending up sounding good in a noisy lo-fi way. Others sounded the bad kind of lo-fi!
