  1. Cuts Across the Land, debut album by the Duke Spirit. I love the sounds the two guitars make in this band.... everything else is great too though!
  2. So the pick wears down and the point goes round. Do you throw them out when they stop being pointy?
  3. Rates very highly! I heard Kirsty’s version (ie the original ) of “They Don’t Know” the other day. I’d kind of forgotten all about it, but it sounded fantastic!
  4. Just followed the "25 greatest basslines" link in another thread and saw these things....... never seen them before. Don't think I'll be taking them up...... but might be useful for some people
  5. So it doesn't seem like people are choosing the music to match their band's own genre or sound......... is that right? Or are some of you doing it with music which roughly matches your sound?
  6. Bob has made it into the Times quiz this week......... the questions are normally pretty hard but the ones on popular music are never very taxing😃!
  7. My band does not currently do this...... but sounds like it could be a good idea! I'll be watching the thread with interest.
  8. Another important thing about a pick other than thickness is the grip. Don't want to drop it don’t want ‘rotating pick’ syndrome. The Dunlop’s are pretty good in that regard.
  9. Like @ahpook I use Jim Dunlop 0.88mm for guitar and bass. Ukulele - no pick. Many years ago I went to a blues guitar weekend, and the first thing the instructor did was walk round the room and feel everybodies pick. [Insert joke about missing 'r' here ]. The more easily he could bend your pick the more dissaproving he would look. A really stiff one would get an approving look. [continue joke here ]. His point was that a flexible pick is just absorbing your energy - you should just use a harder pick and apply less energy. Not sure if that's a widely held wisdom.... interesting to see comments here.
  10. Music comes first for me..... I'd rather see an OK-ish live band than watch TV. And there are plenty of great ones around......
  11. I think a lot of band names like that would not get chosen in the post-google age!
  12. You've won two competitions in your life... would be a better story if the Peter Perret comp was the only one !!
  13. Good song! Fancy digging through your entire archive in case you have some other recomendations?
  14. I was looking at some banjo roll advise sites when I tried to take it up - a couple of them actually said you'll need to silence your banjo while you practice rolls for the sake of your family etc. So I think the banjo mute idea is the way to go. BTW - in the end I did not have the patience to learn any rolls ☹️.
  15. 😲 What do you mean a proper low G!!!! The re-entrant tuning is all part of the charm of the Ukulele...... IMO anyway. I guess low g does have it's place for the occasional song where you need the extra range, otherwise high G is the place to be 😉!
  16. Wasted Drummers? Insert here the name of drummer from a band you hate, but who is a decent drummer!
  17. So the story goes: Phil (thy animal) Taylor of Motorhead fell backwards from his drum stool off of a high stage. Doctors said his injuries did not include a fatal neck-break only because he was so drunk/wasted that his body was totally relaxed and he hit the ground like a rag doll. OK, if you want to be picky being drunk/wasted may have contributed to the fall in the first place !
  18. Seems like the right choice, hope it goes well. So how did you leave things with #2? As he was a close second, sounds like it would be good to somehow keep him on your radar.
  19. I never saw it at the time, but recently caught up with "The Detectorists" on iPlayer. It is centred around some metal detector users, and whilst I don't know anything about detecting, thay seems to have researched all the details, such as how the detectorists cut a 'plug' of soil out of the ground and then replace it afterwards. Those touches do add to the program IMO.
  20. I use a amp simulator whenever the PA allows it. Otherwise bring an amp/combo. Some have said that the amps enhance the visuals.... but having no amp gives me more room to move/pose/dance/jump etc.. I mean, what the audience rather look at.... more of me or a black box? Actually don't answer that!
  21. One of my favourite albums - Joanna Newsom, The Milk-Eyed Mender. She mainly accompanies herself on harp. Sometimes piano or harpsichord. Sample track - Sadie
  22. Under Me SlengTeng - Wayne Smith. Widely acknowledged as the first all-electronic reggae song - 1984. What do you think of the song... what do you think of the shift to electronics in reggae?
