1.
What I would massively recommend is, if you're there on a Monday night, head to the Blue Smoke/Jazz Standard to hear the Mingus Big Band. They have a residency there every Monday. And the food there is very tasty "southern" style cooking, and a big selection of very nice beer. http://www.bluesmoke.com
Thanks for that recommendation.... I'm already booked for dinner Monday night otherwise that would've been a great night out by the sounds of it.
2. Now dont laugh..but i have been using orthotic insoles in all my shoes for the past 18 months (I said don't laugh) and I cant remember the last time i had significant back pain after a gig. I used to use a comfort strap but don't even bother with that now i just have a wide leather strap. It may not be the case with all back pain but i have certainly found the correction of posture due to the use of insoles has helped me enormously. Not much use if you are wearing heels but if you have trainers or fairly flat shoes they can work wonders.
3.
TBH there's much better things to do with your time while you are there.
absolutely - just wanted to know if there was a decent store there i can pop into without going too far out of my way and save a few quid on the UK price...
4. Yep had a look on google at Rudy's after BigRedX mentioned them and i'm sure I will be passing that way at some point (and they stock Tech21 and Aguillar) so i'll have a browse of the shiny things. Great response chaps - knew the Basschatters would help me out!
5.
Be aware that Sadowsky have moved, no longer at the foot of Brooklyn Bridge...!
it's probably no bad thing if i cant find them
6. yep, absolutely agree on the cost of things and wouldnt normally bother shopping there other than a few american made bits and bobs seem cheaper even in Manhattan. I'm there primarily for the culture the food and the vibe...and to do a few bits I missed last time i was there.
7.
Manhattan is an overpriced tourist trap.
did you have a bad experience there?
8. thanks for that - very useful indeed (must not go to the sadowsky workshop...must not go to the sadowsky workshop...must not go to the sadowsky workshop...must not go to the sadowsky workshop...)
9. Anyone recommend a good/interesting music store in Manhattan (wont have time to go trecking around much further afield)? Also i was going to pickup a Tech 21 BBDI out there if i get the chance as they're around $200... i'm assuming there's no difference between one bought there and one bought in the uk? Any suggestions gratefully recieved cheers Martin
10. I have the 5 string version of this and love it, great preamp and totally noiseless and looks the business.... good luck with your sale
11. if i can shift my Line 6 M5 pedal before this sells i'll be in touch
12. For sale is my M5 stompbox modeler... boxed and in as new conditon. i bought this so i could try out different effects with just the one pedal... as it turns out i dont really use effects much so not a lot of use to me... GAS - it's a terrible thing! Anyway - £120 posted I will post pics asap Cheers Martin edit - would be interested in a Tech 21 Sansamp BDDI Bass Driver as possible straight trade (if latest version and in mint condition).
13.
You might be surprised how good the drums can sound using only three or four mics.
indeed - i probably would only use a kick, snare/hihat and a one or two overheads
14. thanks for that i will have a look... might be i can record the drums as a single track to start with then re-record them with multiple mics after a guide track is in place.
15. Hi I would like to use a mixer with logic so i can record multiple tracks simultaneously and mix them later..i.e. to record a fully miked up band and mix each element independantly later. Firstly is this possible and what sort of hardware would i need to do this? Hope you can help Cheers Martin
16. This may not be much use as I've not owned a Sandberg but I do have a Fender deluxe 5 (latest model). I suspect the QC of Sandberg is much better than Fender so if buying a Fender it's often a case of trying as many as you can as no 2 are likely to be the same. I'd always stayed away from Fender for just that reason as I had never come across one I couldn't find fault with in the shop but the Deluxe5 I picked up felt just right to me and I loved the simplicity and recognizability of the sounds it made. I have the natural finish with maple neck which just blew me away, so in part the looks also decided it for me (yep I'm that shallow) but the final nail in my wallets coffin was the fact that it is noiseless. As far as the preamp is concerned, I think the latest version (now 3 band) is actually rather good - it provides useful boost in key areas without colouring the sound unduly and includes an option to switch to passive. As many have commented in other threads there are a huge number of manufacturers making Jazz bass clones that are likely to be consistently better made but if you can find a good one the latest Fender deluxe is a pretty decent instrument.
17. I used to have a Markbass CMD 121 P with NY121 ext cab and it was a great mini rig, very loud and strong midrange punch - sounded good in a band mix. The band I was in at the time was a loud covers band doing pubs etc always seemed to cope well, the one down side if indeed this counts as one is that it does look very small on a stage if your guitarists are using half stacks. I now use a Barefaced Midget and Compact with a Markbass head...but I think a couple of Midgets with a powerfull lightweight head (such as the Promethean) would probably have more usable headroom and bass extension than the 121P/121NY combination and be virtually the same size etc. I couldn't comment on the other gear as I haven't used it but I personally (if lifting heavy or awkward gear is a potential problem) prefer having two lightweight cabs rather than one larger one as its easy to move and get in and out of the house/car etc.
18. woohoo! I've already made space on my pedal board and run an extra power cable in anticipation, I hope I got in quick enough to get one from this batch (Max - I'm the numpty that ordered with international shipping (thanks for sorting the refund)). Martin
19. wow, lovely sound and beautiful playing. If only I were closer I'd love to get lessons from you.
20. I use a ProTec contego - not cheap but superb level of protection without the weight and hassle of a hard case, also easy to slip the bass in and out of in confined spaces - handy if you play pubs..
21. just to continue the BF Midget debacle - normally I use a BF midget and BF compact together, I recently did a gig in a large pub and forgot to plug in my BF Compact (getting old) and hence was using just the Midget, I remember thinking the bass was a bit lighter than normal so I just added a bit more from EQ on the amp but otherwise the sound and level was fine. I was pretty amazed by what the Midget can handle, if you have enough power to run into it it will certainly be fine for medium gigs and rehearsals unless your band is stupidly loud. The Compact is a good cab too of course but the Midget has the 'I can't believe it' factor and is very portable.
22. very pretty - and nice grain pattern to the wood
23. I have recently acquired a 2010 Jazz v deluxe (the one that was in Bass Direct- linked earlier in this thread) and I love it. The preamp is quite subtle and allows for easy tweaking of EQ without dramatically colouring the sound - I like this approach as I've always used the preamp to fine tune EQ from the bass after having established the overall tonal shape using the amp. It is also quiet with no mains buzz - I've been put off Jazz basses in the past because of the noise but the N3 pickups do seem to be genuinely noiseless. The pan pot as mentioned in earlier posts isn't really a progressive pan, it is possible to blend the pickups one to the other but the blending is only within a very small percentage of the the pot rotation either side of the centre indent (both pickups together) and almost immediately becomes bridge pickup, both pickups or neck pickup. I suspect this is because it is a passive blend rather than active in order to preserve the option when in passive mode, although why they don't just use the twin volume pot layout of the standard Jazz rather than a master volume and blend I don't know. In all I am delighted with the sound and particularly the look of the instrument, the 70's neck and logo do it for me big time! 24. I recently came across this one... ticks all the boxes for me in terms of sound, features and finish - to be honest I've always loved 'em just never found one I really liked until now - so i have finally joined the club.
