1.
But to offer a band £150 for a second visit is a bit rich, we got caught out as we assumed it was the same as our first rims which was £200.
The onus is on you (the band) to confirm money before the actual gig if you want to avoid any nasty surprises but I find it weird that after paying you £200 for a first gig, you'd think the offer of a second date meant that they'd previously been happy with your performance and their takings As for your original question, if you ask yourselves why you actually gig, your answer will tell you if you should bother or not. I have plenty of friends who will drive 50 kms to play 3 hours for nothing and others who won't take the covers of their rig for less than 250€ per man. They're all happy because they all play for different reasons.
2. Yes, he's a great player. Saw him loads in the late 80's with Gary Moore. Welcome to Basschat by the way.
3.
One from my teens - Naked by Reef. The simplest bass line imaginable behind a great guitar hook. I hear this song and it always pulls me right into that groove! Reef - Naked:
Ooh, that hits the spot
4. At first, I thought that they sound like they were more interested in fun and mates playing their favourite tunes rather than providing a show that could earn them any money. Then I thought, maybe they're just sh*t and "fun" is their excuse.
5. Cheeky "Oirish" 70's popster Gilbert O Sullivan once worked as a pirate in Cornwall.
6.
when Kansas split up ex members were heard to say " I guess......"
Correct. They were speaking to Steve Lukather and David Paitch at the time.
7. Probably nothing wrong with them at all or Thomann wouldn't sell them. However, I would suggest that as makers such as Peavey and Aria have always made basses and guitars since the year dot, would it not be better to buy a secondhand one of those? I seem to remember a Peavey Milestone on here for about £50 just recently.
8. Because her management told her that her posh upper class double surname may hinder her career, screechy pop princess Katherine Lady-Garden changed her name to Kate Bush.
9.
Hoist by my own petard, which was in fact Van/naV/Fourgonnette/ettennogrouF's working title for the "Contractual Obligation" album.
You are of course, again correct in your assertions regarding that album. However, I must point out that it was not released under his own name but under the pseudonym "Marmite Morrison" and I'm sure you are well aquainted with how the story of that came about involving a supermarket "own brand" item and a supposedly borrowed handbag makeup mirror. In my opinion, This may have been responsible for the much used "you either love him or hate him" view.
10. Evil SMERSH actress Lotte Lenya (Rosa Klebb) changed her gender and name in 1970 after the film work dried up to become the fuzzy haired pop midget we all love and know as Leo Sayer.
11.
Thank you for the clarification, good job he wasn't in France at the time as Fourgonnette Carrefour would never have worked!
But surely, that would make him ruoferraC ettennogrouF ?
12.
Surely that would make him nosirroM naV?
Of course, you're right. Although I did say "got the idea for" and at no point did I say "read" so your pedantry appears a little misplaced. However, I will admit to using the rear view mirror idea to purely add a certain artistic dramatisation to enhance the whole crazy idea of Van Morrison being followed by a supermarket delivery vehicle. I hope this clears up the matter.
13. Van Morrison actually got the idea for his stage name after seeing a well known supermarket delivery van in his rear view mirror. Marc Bolan was the only brother of the Nolan sisters and changed his name slightly so as not seek success on the back of their fame. U2's Bono decided on their name after a bass playing school friend turned up at A&E at Dublin General Hospital to have something removed from his bottom which he'd been carrying when he fell down the stairs.
14.
I always ask for cash now. No matter how specific I was I'd always end up getting something that resulted in me exclaiming "WHAT THE F*** IS THAT?"
And how embarrassing when they see it on your boot-sale stall in the summer. (oops)
15. After this lot, I'll never need to trawl You tube for my Sunday morning groove time. There's some really fantastic stuff there (and the VULFPECK track is something else) Nice to see that good groove does not just depend on 70's hair and multi-coloured satin jumpsuits.
16. How about £19.50 in cash
17.
Not to be confused with Acoustic Silence, which was what we used to hear when my band finished a song.
18.
We are on it
That's what I like, efficiency
19.
No, you've misread it... it's nearly 2 feet.
Like the role of Tarzan.
20. Well personally, I think this has been a really worthwhile thread as I'm going to nick "Acoustic Science" as the new name for our acoustic duo
21. Best contact the mod for the market place section then.
22. Re bands boycotting poor venues that don't pay, it's never going to happen and the reason for that is in 50% of the previous posts. Lots of people like to play for fun. It's just a hobby for some people and why shouldn't it be? The question is, how good are the bands that do play for nothing? It's possible of course, but unlikely that they'll be exceptionally good and after the landlord has only served drinks to 15 people each night for a couple of months, he'll go back to paid bands that will fill a venue. I have a couple of mates in an Essex covers band that never fail to fill every venue to danger point. Of course they don't play for nothing, they know their worth but so do the landlords.
23.
I'm not a keyboard player; I'm a guitarist, so I put a lot of thought into making a bass track, which usually comes about as part of the writing process with Bluey. Occasionally they'll be handed over to a bass player to record which is what happened on the Positivity album; mostly my bass lines but played by Randy. Besides, I like to think that what I do is beneficial to the craft of bass playing and my work has certainly benefited some bass players! Bluey told me that they used 'Colibri' at Berkley as part of their bass curriculum, thinking that it was a live bass track! In fact, most people assume that it was recorded by Randy, which is one hell of a compliment. Who played what on 'Tribes, Vibes & Scribes' can be found here. Richard Bull
My bass teacher told me he'd like me to try and nail this great line he'd just heard by Randy Hope-Taylor when Tribes was released. I wonder if he knows after all these years ( I never got it to sound right if you're wondering) Many thanks for the information, and hats off to you. You had me fooled (and 50,000 others I suspect)
24. Well, looking at the replies so far (I wasn't familiar with two suggestions but have just listened to them) we're all sitting on the same bus at the moment. Every one of the choices makes you need to tap feet / hands / bob your head and just generally move and get into it. I had expected to come across a few that might make me ask "where's the groove in this?" as some folks may view things differently but, not yet so maybe groove is a universal thing that we all agree on after all.
25. Groove. Now there's a word that gets used a lot by bass players and drummers. So, what is the one song that really sums it up for you? I'm interested to find out if groove actually means different things to different people or whether we all agree on what it is but simply feel it in different music. For me, the song is not even one I particularly think is great but this is about "the groove" so, with a simple (but very well played) bass line, a little percussion, 3 chords on the keyboards and a few other bits 'n' pieces, it's Paradise by Sade' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KuKmjikoQc
