Those 3d printed guitars are a work of art. More of the world needs to see them. On the other hand, without you there to explain the history and the various stages and prototypes, it won't be the same. That was about as interesting as seeing the guitars themselves. Sadly I left my BC112mk3 in the car to save space but had I known you were interested in what someone with two left thumbs can do I would have brought it out to show you. For the braces in the same direction, there is actually some theory involved around standing waves: you want the brace gaps to not be equal to each other, else you encourage standing wave resonances. Saying that, there's a joke Q: What's the difference between theory in practice? A: In theory they're the same but in practice they're different. For a cabinet of sizes we're talking about I wouldn't be able to hear a difference, but you may have more sensitive ears. On the subject of wadding, again I don't think I could hear a difference at gigs, but that may just be because I forgot to remove the wadding in my ear canal. If you're a weight weenie and are considering putting holes in braces to shave grams off there, no-wadding would be much easier.

Fiddlesticks, I was thinking of going by train but there are no trains running between Reading and Crowthorne on that day. Automobile it is then. If anyone has a Fishman Fluence (bass or guitar) could I please request its presence at the bash? I would really like to hear a Fishman Fluence because the reviews all say how wonderful it is, and yet the YT sound demos leave me cold so I'm curious as to what's going on there.

Never owned the K&K Double Big Twin, but I've used the Fishman BP-100 which looks similar. When I was in your situation I used small bulldog clips between the strings. The bonus of this approach is that it should be non-permanent and very easy to remove. The BP-100 is not the same in that it's supposed to go right up to the edge of the bridge, and comes as a pair rather than a four (which probably would make bulldog clips awkward on your K&K thinking about it) but if you already have the clips you have nothing to lose by trying it. If it means anything, I absolutely love my Bass Max. Favourite sounding pickup.

Yeah, I missed that, but in my defence the site is currently a mess. The ABM page and UK ABM page make no mention of those, and the dropdown of the "ABM Series" only contains EVO-IV.

Sadly it's actually heavier if going by their website (links to source) ABM EVO-IV Metal: 13.8kg ABM EVO-IV Wood: 12.5kg I agree, a gig bag would put my mind at ease immensely.

Totally agree with you. I have dropped my ABM, and the wooden sleeve saved me big time. Saying that, the all-metal cover looks damn cool in my opinion. I see they've removed the AGM model from their line-up, which is sad as they looked rather nice. Actually, they sold two similar AGM amps, one in a wooden enclosure, one in a metal one. Was that Ashdown testing the waters?

Interestingly Ashdown have updated their product range, and the ABM Evo V is no more. In its place is a new ABM Evo IV with an all-metal chassis. Those are for speaker crossovers, so no they're not the right ones. If you rip off the charcoal padding on the blue PCB in the circuit diagram you should see a physically much smaller capacitor, and with luck there will be the rated capacitance written on it. On the circuit diagram above, it is not shown, but would be on the blue thing in the centre, on the other side of the board.

The GSS Bulletpack runs on DC and has a barrel socket, so you have options with batteries meant for laptops. GSS also sell compatible batteries on their website, but I only own the amp. It's kept up with loud big bands in village halls but I've never used it outside. If I am able to make this bash, I'll see if I can bring it along.

It's a really interesting video. Tallies with the Andertons blind shootout that they did at roughly the same time.

Understood. From what I can see the S2012s would make for a very potent rig, and if the cabinet is built around the dimensions of a V4B that would sit on top, yeah that would look pretty nice as well.

This is going to be an interesting topic! So is the brief that you like everything about your Ampeg SVT212 except the weight?

There used to be a page on Barefaced's website about mixing cabinet and amp ratings. It's gone now sadly so you cannot verify what I'm relaying, but it basically boiled down to that you can pair any powered cabinet with any powered amp, if you're sensible. If the cabinet rating is higher than the amp rating, then you're not reaching the cabinet's full potential. Any online information about how distorted waves coming from an underpowered amp break a cabinet just aren't true. If the amp rating is higher than the cabinet rating, then the amp has the potential to blow the speakers. However, with sensible usage you will be fine as the speakers will be telling you that they are unhappy with unpleasant distortion, particularly on the low notes. Only caveat to that is when you put an aggressive HPF in the signal chain and you reach the thermal limit rather than the excursion limit of the speaker. With decent drivers such as in the Barefaced or LFSys ranges, you'd have to be absolutely ragging them for that. This Barefaced page is still referenced on their Info pages, but the actual page is no longer there. Are we to read into that?

I will take your secret to the grave. I'm in a similar situation. I turned up for a big band gig once and there was an audible gasp from the band members when I started playing through it. No FoH with that one.

They've been gigged, a few times actually! I wouldn't claim to have the most critical ear, but they certainly did the job on electric. On the double bass, with everything set flat, they do a good job, but it surprisingly isn't my favourite pair of speakers. That award would go to my 10" BassChats which for whatever reason manage to capture the warmth of the double bass and project without the piezo honk. You can get there with EQ. Saving £400 sounds wonderful if you put it like that. Not sure my wife sees it that way though 😄

If it's of interest, what I do is I click the [Quote] button of the previous commenter, select all text, copy it to the clipboard, then delete everything and paste, adding my name. It's not slick, but for something you only do once a year it's good enough.
