Which Squier Bass will complement & serve as a backup to my G & L L200?
spongebob replied to mashup's topic in Bass Guitars
I've got a CV Jazz and a VM P - can't say enough good things about them. Both seem pretty equal in quality and sound - and they look fab, too. -
Thanks guys. It's certainly a nice looking bass, and I'm very happy with it. You've just got to love these Squiers, haven't you? I just wonder what they're going to come up with next. The reaction that they get everywhere seems to prove that Fender are doing something right by upping the Squier quality. Obviously can't be hurting the MIM/MIA sales either, so maybe they are just selling more guitars. The 6-strings look quite tasty too.

I recently let go of my Squier CV Precision - loved the bass, but couldn't quite get with the fretboard. Asked on here for advice, and..... Picked up a Vintage Modified Precision in Amber/Maple Neck. Neck width is 42mm on the CV, and 41.3mm on the VM. Makes a nice difference in my hands, just more playable. The maple neck is quite odd for me, as I've normally only played glossy necks, like my CV Jazz or Rics. Been giving it some serious play - I love it. I had a MIM P a few years back, and TBH, I'd be hard pushed to spot any differences, I'd actually say the body on the VM feels a little more sturdy. Having now played both CV's and this VM, they seem to be equally great ranges. The VM certainly feels no 'less' of an instrument than the CV....don't quite know what I was expecting.....suppose because it's a little cheaper, thought it might feel very different. Set-up from the factory was excellent - a little tweak on the action, and it was ready to go. I'll re-string it over the weekend, but TBH, the stock strings aren't that bad. Pups are very powerful - as much P as my old MIM or CV. Neck is very, very playable. Even the wood match on the rear is pretty good. I wouldn't care too much anyway, it's to be played after all! In essence, I'm starting to think that more expensive basses are wasted on me - I seem to get more pleasure and ease of play from these CV's and VM's than things 4 times the price! Here are some pics -

That's really helpful - many thanks and question answered!
Where to start... The night in Birkenhead when the floorboards gave out underneath the drummer and he disappeared arse first into the pub cellar... The night when a very drunk bloke in Stockport insisted he could get up and sing a song with us as he'd "just got out of prison"... The night I was depping and had written my charts out using the only pen I could find, a red felt pen. When the gig started the stage lights came on for the first time and I found out I was situated directly below a permanently switched-on red parcan... The night in Oldham where we played to two bar staff and the pub dog. Midway through the first set the dog passed judgement by ambling stage front and cocking his leg on the singer's monitor wedge... I could go on and on...
Classics!!! The mental image from number 1 will stay with me forever......arse first into a cellar? Oooooouchhhh!!

I recently passed on my CV 60's Precision. Loved it, but just couldn't quite get with the neck width....found it a little unwieldy for my hands! I've read that the 50's P has an ever wider neck....but how about a smaller one? I know my Rics and how they can differ, is it the same for P's? Is a VM-P, for example, very different? Is there an era of the slightly smaller neck? Not looking to spend megabucks, as it's not meant to be a main gigging bass. I'm no expert at all on these, so any advice would be good.

I sold my CV Precision through BC - only because I couldn't quite get comfy with the Precision neck! Loved the bass, though. However, I would never part with my CV 60's Jazz. Plays and sounds just like it should, and only cost me about £280 just before the price rise at the start of this year. If anything happened to it, I'd totally buy another. At £319, they are still a steal compared to other Fenders. I'm looking forward to the range increasing, a thinner-necked P would certainly tempt me! ...and I think the CV colour schemes look better than the Fenders as well - I've never really been a Fender fan, so for a Squier was no problem whatsoever. If it's not a Ric, it can say whatever it likes on the headstock!

Jools Holland Show - Still Worth Watching?
spongebob replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
Sky +'d it last night.....really love R.Kelly, so should be great. Beck once called him the last great Soul man....I fully agree, a totally superb artist. First act I've actually wanted to see on Jools' show for an eternity! -
regarding gas a fellow basschatter recentlty commented " you always end back where you started from. me thinks its true forgrt about the sei, overwater etc # enjoy the playing!!!!
+100% I've ended up with two different basses of the same type that I had about 3/4 years ago. Been through a few in the meantime, but now right back at square 1.....for now...!

Maurice Gibb - Bee Gees On TV Last Night

Anyone else see the Bee Gees programme on BBC 1 last night? I always think Maurice was the coolest Brother Gibb.....and he plays bass! I love the images of him in his mid-70's threads, playing his Ric 4001. He played a good few throughout his life - in fact, a chap over on Rickresource owns his sky-blue 4001 which he played in the late 60's on loads of TV and video. Everyone seems to have their own fave era - I love the pre-Fever 70's material, Fanny Be Tender, Love So Right, etc. Superb, soulful stuff no matter where they came from! Must admit, quite like a lot of their other stuff too....This Is Where I came In....great tune! Couldn't find a decent pic of Maurice to post here with Ric and shades, but the prog is well worth a watch if repeated. Oh...and he sure could play bass as well!

I feel guilty with any more than two!

+1 on EW&F. Great albums band as well....the 'big' singles get a lot of cred (rightfully so), but they have produced some cracking long players IMHO.

The addition of Hugh Lawrie to this week's later is an all-time low for me. Maybe it's just been on too long, or his bookers just need to be shot...but as the only main channel 'live' music show, doesn't it need to offer us more than a millionaire Oxbridge actor/comic dabbling into his music hobby? The show's had some great performance is years past - it was always worth a watch to try and catch something new. However, it just seems to now be pretty obvious stuff, and often bands/acts returning series after series. Another thing is the sound....you watch an older show, like Whistle Test (repeat for me, too young first time round), etc, and the sound is a bit more defined. I've always thought Later sounds like an aircraft hanger.....there's never any bass tone going on, no matter what they play. Maybe I'm in the minority here, or hard to please, but I just feel that the show used to offer more. Lawrie's appearance reminded me of something on BBC4 last week about the state of Top Of The Pops, etc, in 1976, pre-punk light entertainment and variety acts....it had to change. Now Later, once the home of scary one-off's such as At The Drive In's chaotic trashing performance, showcases him from 'House'! Time for a shake up?

Thanks for the kind words - it does look nice, doesn't it? .....and Tom's always man of impeccable bass tastes! Must admit, it did come out shinier than normal, suppose it's just the sunlight on the day. I'm going to list this on E-bay, but obviously this listing still stands if any takers emerge from bassland! This is now available to send - in the original box - but would be without the hardcase. Sensible offers?

Probably against my better judgement, I'm looking to sell my Squier Classic Vibe 60's Precision in Fiesta Red. I only bought it a few months ago - condition is as new. All I have used it for is practice - and re-strung it with some D'addario Nickels. No mods, no changes, nothing! Only time it has left the house was for a quick fettle by legendary custom guitar/bass maker Martin Sims. I was passing his place, so just had the action lowered a little, and a bit of relief in the neck. The only reason I'm letting it go is because I also own a CV Jazz. I just find the neck on the Jazz so much easier to play with my hands. I totally love the Precision - the looks, the tone....but I'm just a better player on the Jazz, so have to accept it! Don't want to post, so this one will be collection only. I'm based in Tenterden, Kent (near to Ashford). I'll throw in a unused, as new bass-shaped hard case purchased at the same time from the Flightcase Warehouse. Price is £250 all in. As I have said, it's basically a new guitar with a new hard case! Please contact Iain - or call/leave a message on 0784 770 4422.

I always use the method I was told years ago - all bass settings to the top, and do the tweaking with the amp. Mind you, I've always played passive.
-
I am fully GAS free. Got the Ric, and a J and P Classic Vibe. I was actually thinking of selling one of the CV's - I love them both - but feel guilty having 3 basses....even though 2 cost less than £600 together. Tone-wise, it's more than I'll ever need - got a solid amp set-up, and I've never GAS'd over amps anyway! So I've kind of got reverse GAS, to sell rather than buy!

Butterscotch Blonde Beauty in da.... Port! ;)

Congrats, GW. That looks totally fab....you'll have me GAS'ing for another CV at this rate! These basses are just sooo good. They've actually got me playing Fenders! -
P-Bass. Should I have one? If so, which one?
spongebob replied to skhatru's topic in General Discussion
+1 on the Classic Vibes. I've never been a P-bass player - tried some in the past, but really couldn't get the feel. Tried again with a 60's CV-P after reading glowing reviews. Upshot is, I love it. Far prefer it to any other P I've played, all of which cost a load more cash! It just felt great from the box, and really has a vibe of it's own. And it sounds great! -
I really liked George Melly as a kid. He use to be on Grananda Tele a lot in the 70's and when I went to see him he was amazing.
George Melly and The Stranglers - 'Old Codger'????? .....hello.....????

My jazz introduction came a little sideways. Listening to some time back to early Santana in the early 90's - particularly his jazzy period 72-74 - and his album with John Mclaughlin, on which they covered some Coltrane. I'm also a fan of certain parts of rap and hip-hop - 'The Low End Theory' by A Tribe Called Quest is built heavily on old Blue Note samples. This led me to check out some of the key records, which led me to get in other elements of jazz. So I kind of came into it by default! The first jazz track I really enjoyed after this introduction was probably something like 'Better Git It In Your Soul' by Charles Mingus.
