1.
So you bought one then? To quote Spongebob (the real one!) - "Whaddya think"?
I totally love it. Feels great, brilliant tone, a really useable bass. It actually has made me re-think my entire view of Fenders. I've always been a Ric man, but TBH I am starting to feel like I've been cheated! Playing the Ged has a) made playing much easier, and I can't believe it's soooooo good at that price. It just proves that brand snobbery is not always a good thing! Back to the amp............. I played last night (before I read the above), had a bit of a fiddle and it did sound better. The amp was on the floor - on Saturday, when I was drowned out, I was on top of the guitarists Marshall. I assume that stacking the amps together wouldn't have helped much either?
2. I recently bought a Markbass 121P, the 300w 12" combo. It's twice the power of my old Trace (on paper), and sounds fab. However.....a couple of times, using it even only for pub gigs, I have struggled to get as much power as I expected. Last night, I had the volume on 3/4, everything else pretty much at 12 o'clock except for the VPF at 3 o'clock, and the VLF set at about 1/4 high. I'm really no expert, so would appreciate any help on how to get the best sound and power from it! Last night I was using my Fender Jazz Geddy, but my sound lacked any bottom end, and just got totally lost in the mix. I like the clang, of course, but a bit of bass would be good! I'm playing again this afternoon, so any ideas will be tried with immediate effect!!
3. Thanks for clearing that up! The amount of knowledge on here is awesome!!
4. Thanks for clearing that one up! The Mike Dirnt bass has according to the Fender site - a thick neck. I prefer a thinner style - is the original '51 more normal precision thick or jazz thin? BTW - I thought Lou's bass was the same one as in this clip. It's obviously a different colour.....is this a 51? I'm probably wrong again......! 5. Is it a discontinued model? I've seen some for sale new, but both the Fender UK and US sites fail to mention it anywhere! Can anyone confirm this? Also, what can anybody tell me about Lou Barlow's? Modified? Please help - pic link below! 6. I'm downsizing my basses to a more useable and diverse set-up, for a whole number of reasons! Yesterday, I was checking out recent Dinosaur Jr footage, with Lou Barlow now playing what I think is a '51 P-bass. It's hard to make out the tone on record and on the footage, so I was wondering what peoples' opinions are on these. You can pick them up for under £550, so they are relatively low-priced, and MIM? How do they compare to a regular Precision - sound-wise, weight, and neck size? I suppose I'd like a tone that works all-round on different styles - is the single pup a disadvantage to power and tone? Lou's an ex-Ric man (until it was stolen a couple of years back), so he's got taste as well as style in my book! I'm a real newbie to Fenders, so please forgive me....and don't worry about telling me the obvious!!
7. Still for sale at £1175 or OIRO.......
8. I know. I have seen some howlers! Maple Glow is a trad Ric colour, so you can't ever go wrong. Has to be cash, sorry - no trades. Serious offers in the region of only!!
9.
I had one of these, albeit lefty - it was an awesome bass but i had to free up some money! have a bump on me
Me too, so it's gotta go. Thanks for the kind words though, she's a beaut!
10. With regret, and pending a return to full time education, I am having to sell my pride and joy. This is my 4004 Laredo. Purchased in February this year, the condition is as new. It has never been gigged. Manufactured in 2008. Comes in immaculate hard case, with unopened cloth and all the usual extras. There are no marks, dents, scratches or anything. It is the same as the day it came from the factory. The 4004 is the top of the Ric bass range. The sound is similar to the classic 4003, but with much more power. These basses are super-rare in the UK, retail price is just under £3000, with a 2+ year waiting time. Don't forget Lemmy has played 4004's (he has his own limited signature version limited to 61!) for many years. This is priced to sell at £1350 - with value that will only appreciate. Search on E-bay, and you'll never find a 4004. Contact Iain - 0784 770 4422 or e-mail [email protected] Located in Kent, collection only.
11. You might want to check your spelling in your first post, as you've just admitted to "touching an old squire", which has started me giggling uncontrollably. smile.gif But the charges were dropped! :brow:
12. Did a search on this, but couldn't find a definite answer. I'm no expert here at all, so please forgive my innocent questioning! The Geddy J-bass - is the neck much slimmer than a standard MIM Jazz? It's the only Jazz I've eve touched, bar an old Squire. I was just wondering about how the J-widths vary...are they all really thin? I like!! I've also seen some nice photos of the Marcus Miller Sig. Anybody got one? Differences....and neck width??!! All answers welcomed!
13. But where do we get it from.......and when!!!!!!
14. I've always loved the look of the Jaguar bass, especially in red! What is the tonal difference between the Jag and the Jazz? The pick-up arrangements look quite similar. I'm not in the market to buy at the mo (too busy staring at the new Geddy bass!), but down the line, who knows? It's a bass I've always thought looks fab. And........... Am I being a bit dopey here - but what does GAS actually mean/stand for???????
15. Anybody know where the sunburst picture came from? I've looked on the Fender site, and can't find anything out about it! Incidentally, I've just picked up a black one - and even as a dedicated Ric man - it really is a fantastic bass!!
16. I have read with interest posts over the last few days about the Geddy J-bass. They seem to have quite a following! However, is there a big difference in tone between a standard Jazz to the Geddy one? I know some of the parts are different, but how much does the tone vary from a standard, similarly-priced Jazz? My experience of Fenders in very small, so forgive me when it comes to knowing where they are made, etc. The Geddy is Japanese?
17. Years ago, I had an old Squire Jazz, which sounded a bit thin, but pretty good. How does the Geddy Jazz compare to a more expensive, or standard version? Does it sound that different??
18. I think that the Geddy is actually closer to the heart rather than the bridge!
19. I was going to keep it again, but have once more decided to sell! Price drop to £1175.....
20. What's the best price (and place to buy) one of these in the UK?
21. I love them, and have played nothing else since I could (barely) afford my first. They are totally unique - and everyone above is right in that sense, in that they are certainly not for everybody. In fact, when it comes to comfort, if that's your main thing, they're probably not for you as they are not the easiest bass to play at all. I have and love both the 4003 and 4004, very different instruments, but both with the Ric eccentricities, They are, as we all know, very pricey - so make sure you really want one before you buy. As for borrowing one, with what they cost, you'd be lucky if anybody let you!! Nobody plays mine except me!!
22. All I'd say that anybody who plays bass is a bassist. I love my Rics, and I play with a pick. Unbelievably, a bassist told me last year that the Ric is not a real bass, because you have to play it with a pick. Wrong on both counts, and what an idiot. It just goes to highlight the snobbish attitude with the music world. I was a drummer before I was a bassist - am I not real either? We all play because we love it - finger style, plectrum, whatever. We're all as real as each other regardless of how you play, what you play, or how long you've been playing. Can't we all just be friends?????
23. Few more days on here then E-bay. As I said above, I've 'retired' from drumming - so it's all got to go.
