Bravo sir, that is one hunk of burning love. I will say one thing to you, WOOD DUST! I used to wear a hat while sanding, sawing, routing, filing cause i had long hair, after sanding a rosewood board one day, I got in the shower and the water turned maroon. And it turns your snot purple too. Any way what a great job. As reguards the weight, get a Comfort Strapp and take longer breaks, or get the router out and remove some wood from underneath the scratchplate. Brill, shape, finish, choice of bits. Did you have to level any frets and did you use a thickness planer? Cheers Steve.

POP! The bubble has burst. Now I know why the action was so high. The strings are buzzing on the first three to four frets as the neck is slightly bowed back, so I took the neck off and tried to slacken the truss rod to let the string tension pull the neck up but the truss rod won't budge. It's a cross headed nut that looks like someone has used the wrong sized screwdriver on. It won't turn either way. It's late now so I'm not going to mess around with it. Bollocks. I'll have to think about this one.

Cheers mate, I know about the strip, I meant the bass in general. I like the look of the strip and the nickel bridge, tuners and I like the sound of this bass, very punchy and it plays beautifully. I'd forgotten how lovely the necks are as my old J.D.'s neck was based on a Jazz. I've never seen a neck pocket so tight and I've seen hundreds of Fender basses.

Ordered on Tuesday, tried to deliver it yesterday but I was at work, collected it from the post office today. Three days from order to arrival, not bad, especially as it came from JAPAN! Three days unbelievable. Anyway Fender Jazz, crafted in Japan, 1999-2000. Is it based on a 62 model? (Note the brass strip at the bridge). Can anyone tell me more about the bass, where it was made, what the body is made of? I think Basswood or Alder. The action was scary high so after a bit of tweaking it plays amazingly well and it sounds as good as anything I've played before, it really is superb. But the biggest shock was the weight, it is as light as a feather. It was so well packed that it took about 15 mins to unpack it. I am well chuffed After a good setup and a clean, I think this maybe my number one bass, it's that good. Cheers Steve.

SR5 is beautiful, absolutely my favorite colour for a bass and dead, dead rare. I'd love a Fender Jazz and matching Precision in Burgandy Mist, pre CBS, just like John Entwhistle used to have but finding them in left hand would be impossible. The three MM's together look sexy.

Bought an SVP PRO preamp from Dan, immaculate, well wrapped, looked great and the preamp was ok too. (Da dum, tshiiii) Sixty quids worth of new valveage, like new, Would buy again from this fine young man. Cheers Steve.

Perhaps my KGB Headless should be played by a decapitated member of the secret police from the former Soviet Union. Or a shifty striped producer of honey.

I took the Recurve to rehearsals tonight for the first time as it has been back to Alan's to have a couple of tweaks, so even though I got it last year, this is the first outing with guitars and drums. It's a beast. It cuts through like a laser and after four hours on a strap it left no aches or pains and it's a six string. It's also the first time I've played a six string with other musicians so I was apprehensive of making loads of cock ups but because it plays so well and is brilliantly designed my fingers seemed to go where I wanted them to. In a nut shell it's f***in' ace.

Hi Alex, from looking at the specs of the speakers and crossover and the frequency that you have chosen to tune the cab to, this is going to sound very powerful with a realistic low end response. I lke the size as well and the intelligent selection of timbers. I'd be very interested in two 8 ohm 15" subs to match my AccuGrooves or one at 4 ohms. With the 3015LF's and your lightweight cabs they would be ideal. PM me some prices if you are going to make any more. Cheers Steve.

Nice one. I'm sure it will be great. Good luck and measure three times, cut once.

Here are some pics to help you. Leave about 150mm of string to wind on. Cheers Steve. -
There's some good basic points here. I tend to forget what I see as the obvious sometimes. I normally leave 55mm beyond the centre of the post for winding, i.e. a lot more than 20mm.
Hi I had to check my post, no I did say 20 cms. Cheers Steve. -
Alan will look after you, he'll keep you informed and the bass you end up with will be world class for a real world price. I've just got my Recurve Singlecut back after some tweeking and it is by far the best playing and sounding bass I've owned. And it looks stunning too. I know what you mean about Roscoe, if you wanted anything like an ACG spec bass from them you would be looking at the thick end of £5000, I think not. I only live over the water from you so if you want to come and see mine get in touch. It's left handed though! Cheers Steve.

Hi Jono, how have you wound the E string onto the tuner post? I restrung my Precision last night and put 4 turns of string underneath each other. This makes the string come off the post at the same angle as the D and G strings. The only string I've had trouble with has been the A string but I just put 5 turns on it at the post. I think that I'll order a Hipshot 3 string retainer, $12, worth it for even string break behind the nut. Anyway if you have another E string to fit, if the one on it is too short, leave at least 20 cms extra string past the tuner post, put the string right down into the slot and wind the string with each turn going under the last. This should give you 4 to 5 turns around the post, enough back angle to stop buzzing and popping out. Cheers Steve. Knackers, didn't see BigRedx's post. -
I went into town t'other day, with the intention of trying some Warwicks, cos I'm thinkin of splashing out on a Thumb 6 BO. I did try a streamer jazzman which btw was excellent, but not much else there to try. Then I noticed this 4string fretless Vigier, with a metal board. I had to have a go (even though I dont play 4's) it was amazing, a bit beat up, but built like a tank! The action was lower than most of my guitars, & the electronics were versatile to say the least. So, I'm looking to find some more info on this (please Ped!) It had 2 single coils, 5 controls, of which 2 were push/pulls and a 3 way mini-toggle, plus 2 outputs!(?). It is obviously used and I would guess around 15yrs(ish) old. The price tag was £850, but they said that was negotiable, as it had been there for 1-2yrs, so I'm thinkin 700-750?? Any info appreciated, Pete.
Hi Pete, was that in Curly Music? If so It's been in there for about a year. Haggle, Haggle.
It's not like anyone is trying to rip lefties off - it's just they make less, sell less, and so there's less economy of scale more risk involved in production deriving a higher price. It might piss you off, but until 50% of the population become left handed - it's tough sh*t.
Thanks bigjohn, tell me something I don't already know, however there are a significant number of relatively famous and what one would call successful left handed musicians, therefore one would expect in the near future a less discriminatory attitude. One can only hope.

I had the bass made for me by Keith Bennion back in 1986 as Rob Green didn't make left handed versions. Anyway after getting Keith to spray over the original clear finish with black, doh! I sold the bass in 1996, then 2 years ago managed to buy it back. Now, after I've stripped it, it's ready for a hard gloss finish curtousy of Keith again. I'm keeping the original EMG's and fitting a U Retro. Here are a couple of shots of removing the finish. So there you are, expect some more pics in a couple of months time. Cheers Steve.

The older Series II's were much better looking wern't they? and Terry's is stunning.
Did you mean £100 MORE......? Have you had a look on Thomman IIRC they are teh same price on there? I may be wrong....
Thanks lads.

I'm looking for a Jazz bass, Fender preferably and was looking on the Guitar Emporium site, not only was the range nowhere near as good as the right handers but the basses they did have are over £100 more. I'm in no way criticising G.E. for this but this is a theme that runs through the industry. There are exceptions, Warwick, erm, anyone else? ACG who built my six string DIDN'T tag on 10% either. Does anyone know of any knooks and crannies where all the nice left handed Jazz basses live? That don't cost a bomb? Cheers Steve.

Hello, thats a nice bass you have there. Can you tell me where you got it from? Ciao Steve.

Slacken off your truss rod by a quarter of a turn, no more and then check. It may take a while to have any effect but wait at least a couple of hours, if this hasn't had an effect, before trying another quarter turn. You say that it didn't make a difference at first when you put the lighter strings on, necks can take a long time to settle after a gague change. Keep me informed Cheers Steve.

Thanks lads. +1 to all of that. He's asking, wait for it, £180. I'm 99% certain from the photos that it's ply, so I've asked him to check in the control cavity, he says that it might be alder, mmmmm, the black of the burst covering all of the contour lines is a bit of a give away. I'd give him £100 for it , we'll see. To think that 10 years ago you could get this kind of thing for about £25-30 in junk shops up and down the land. How times have changed.
