1. If this is the same bass that Happy Jack had at the SE Bash last year, it's really stunning! Beautiful to look at and a dream to play... Good luck with the sale!
2.
http://www.bass-guitar-museum.com/bass-282...hort-Scale-Bass I swapped my home made bitsa Jazz for one of these On friday night (with some money my way as well of course). It's surprisingly fun, my original plan was to rip out the pickups and stick them in my scary dave bass, as I quite like the gutsy old school sound of them. However, if, as this mad website suggests, I can get 200 odd quid for it, I should probably sell it as is, and buy some decent pickups. It is without doubt, as big a piece of sh1t as all old Kay basses ever were. They have not aged well, they are fun to mess about on, but not £250 fun, not by a long shot. Would take pictures of mine, but it looks like the one on the website, just without the dopey picture on the plate, which looks after market on mine as well, but can't be. Just badly lined up. Where's Jon when you need him eh?
Wow; My first ever bass! Bought by my parents from Woolworths as a Xmas present ... Must have been 1974 - I was 13 and it cost about £20 I think... Happy days!

4.
Welcome from the West Sussex crew Cheers Mark
+1
5. I'm sure that one used to be at the factory in High Wycombe....Serial number W1111 I think.
6. Another BUMP! as I still haven't got around to putting this on Ebay.... £90 anyone?
7. After John's brilliant 'Set-ups Masterclass' at last years's SE Bass Bash, he very kindly took pity on me after my failed attempts at setting up my Yamaha TRB 5, and last night, sorted out the bass for me.. ..which now plays really well and is as in tune as a bass can be! Before I play it of course... So thanks John for the help, the beer and the books!! Nik P.s. Yet another example of just how brilliant Basschat and this community of Basschatters can be...
8.
Was it worth it? You tell me.
Yes; definitely! A brilliant piece of work Jack and it just shows what improvements can be made if you have the wherewithall... Nik
9. +1 That's a lovely bass; good luck with the sale!
10. Nice post! It's definitely true that 'all that glisters is not gold', though trying to stay true to that idea with Basschat around is another story!
11. A free BUMP just to say that I played this bass a few years ago when Andre was selling a Wal Mach II which I went over to check out for Mike G.. He'd only just got the Fodera at the time and it was really interesting to be able to compare it directly with the Wal.. Though they're very different animals and I do love Wal basses, the Fodera had something just a little more 'exotic' and 'boutique' about it...Hard to put it into words exactly, but the only other bass I've played that had a such a similar quality, was an Alembic.. Anyway, the Fodera really is a fabulous instrument and that pre-amp is something special... Good luck with the sale!
12. I think it depends on what you are prepared to pay, but I would have thought somewhere around the £2k mark..
13. +1 to that IMO, though having a low action is easier to play, the trade off is that the tone is better when the action is that bit higher.
14.
Here's a reminder of what we are like:
Fantastic stuff Clarky!! Hope you find someone soon....
15.
Having owned this bass for just six months, and wondered frequently why on earth I traded it (for a bass which I then decided I didn't like!), I am hugely relieved to discover the provenance of this bass. Absolutely no disrespect intended towards anyone (including Nick Beggs), but I'm a child of the 60's/70's. I more-or-less gave up listening to current bands from the early 80's onwards and, had you asked me "why?" at the time, I would have cited bands like Kajagoogoo as one of the reasons. That plus the keyboard/synth-driven electronic nonsense that swept the charts at about the same time. Had the story now emerged that this was Trevor Bolder's favourite studio bass (or something) I would have been mortified at letting it go.
Are you a Trevor Bolder fan Jack?
16.
Having played both and owned a Custom I'd say they were quite different-sounding basses in many ways. I prefer the Pro.
+1 They're very different sounding basses; unlike the Custom models which all have a mahogony core, the Pro basses were Ash bodies with no multi-laminate facings. That , plus very different circuitry makes them quite different animals.. Like 4000, I prefer the Pro models but the first Custom I ever had made for me in 1983 (and which was stolen sadly in 1987), was a fabulous bass and one of the few basses i really miss today! Gwilym: I'm still surprised I sold it on too!! Seriously, I had virtually stopped using it having moved almost exclusively to 5 string basses, I kind of fell out of love with it.. It's great to hear this story though and also, to know that it's been restored to it's former glory by Paul herman at Wal.
17. Wow!! very surprising news..... Great sounding rig this; heard it a few times at Bass Bashes and gigs...packs a real punch! Good luck with the sale Al!
18. I emailed H&K but haven't heard anything as yet, and that was 2 weeks ago.. My amp chappie is going to try and contact them too.
19.
You can order new toroidals wound to spec, probably not cheap. One of the advantages of toridals is they make less mechanical noise as there is less straight length of wire to vibrate.
Thanks for that; where do you get them from??
20. Thanks for the replies folks! It's definitely a noisy transformer - the sound doesn't come through the speakers or the DI out. It is located above and around the transforemer itself, which is located in the rear, right hand side of the amp as you look at it head on. As for making the adjustments and trying out the remedies mentioned above, to see if they improve matters, would you recommend them being done by someone who's knowledgeable and experienced with handling electrical equipment? Only, this amp delivers up to a 1000 watts at 2 ohms, so it's not something I'd feel comfortable fiddling about with to be honest...
21. A '..looks like this will have to go on Evilbay' kind of BUMP!
22.
Why do you suspect the transformer? seems unlikely to be the transformer in my experience. What sort of noise, hiss or 50Hz mains hum? How good is your mains electricity - a few of my amps are noisy at home, work fine elsewhere, even though the house wiring is tested all OK. Can you borrow same amp and try at home to compare? Final shot would be take it to a good technician - as with everything in life several causes and several fixes.
Thanks for the reply.... I had it checked by my local technician and he said it was definitely the transformer making the hum (as it did so when he tested it in his workshop).. He also said that with these type of transformers, it can't be cured except by replacing it with another one, which he thought might be difficult bearing in mind this particular amp is now discontinued.. At the kind of volume these amps can make, the hum isn't an isue at all when gigging, but if possible, i'd like to use the amp for practicing at home too..Hence why i thought i'd do a little research here before going back to my technician to see about replacing the transformer. Hope that makes sense...?
23. Hello Folks I have a Hughes & Kettner Bassbase 600 head that I just love the sound of, even though it's a heavy pice of kit! Part of what makes it so heavy is the toroidal transformer that powers it and though it works perfectly, it's a bit noisy when it comes to home usage.. So I'm wondering whether it could be replaced at all and if so, what would be involved? I wouldn't do the work myself as I am not skilled at all in these matters, but before I go and ask my local electronics chappie to take on such a job, I'd like to find out a little more about it if possible..especially in terms of where to source the right part, cost implications etc, etc. So, if anyone here's been down a similar path and has any words of wisdom to share, it would be very much appreciated! Thanks for looking.. Cheers Nik
