Finished Pics! A build for our own Len_derby

Looking very nice! Love the Burl top!! -
Just a quick mock up....... I’ve decided it’s definitely going to be a walnut burr top and back with matching headstock and a pine core for contrast......
-
Just put the first coat of gloss on...... I had to move the bridge on my last build so I thought I’d gloss it at the same time
-
Stunning!!! What more can you say!?!

+1 I bought my Jazz bass kit off him aswell only thing to consider is you might have the same problems geek99 had with the pickup sizes so my advice would be don’t buy the pickups till you have measured the bridge rout as with my Jazz, Discreets and geeks both cavities are routed for 2 neck size pickups..... I looked in to buying some Paulownia and your right it was virtually the same price by the time you factor in p&p and as you say most of the work is already kinda done for you...... -
There a bit different....... but I like them!!

Here’s the revised shape I’m not entirely sure how the bolt on neck will work but I’m sure I’ll figure something out Just in case I doesn’t work out here’s another version
-
Your right after seeing yours I now I want to do a orange bass but I think I’m going to stick with my idea of a orange telecaster shaped bass which I might do after this build Have you decided on your next build yet?......
-
I’m going away from the shape pictured above and going more for a traditional single cut shape with offset waist (heavily influenced by a stunning ACG recurve S type) I’m now thinking probably pine core with Walnut burr, Zebrano or Macassar Ebony veneer front and back for a nice contrast I’ll do a mock-up later to see how it looks......

It’s a slippery slope I think building is more addictive than crack!! I’d go for a mix of option 1 and 2 as you have a lot of choices for lightweight timber ie Paulownia, Swamp Ash, Basswood etc also semi hollow it and that would make it even lighter...... -
Thanks I have the luxury of being in a joinery shop 5 1/2 days a week if I’ve not got a lot going on at work I get the time to get on with it
-
I was seriously considering doing a body that I would split into 4 sections and kinda battenburg it with contrasting timbers but I bottled it and did this body instead, I might give it a go tho!! In regards to shrink rates etc that’s why I like using sapele and pine as they are similar
-
Got the routing done except for the bridge I’ll wait till I get that first Funny you say that, that’s what I have done I had the same thought last night (great minds and all that!!) The arm rest is ok I kind of play with my arm diagonal anyway as I find that more comfortable Got the first coat of poly on, I was going to go Matt but I think this one should be gloss and looking at my last build I’m going to refinish that one gloss as well when I move the bridge, Just in case anyone notices I’ve still got the clean up the bottom of the neck pocket.........
-
Don’t tempt me I might just do that!!!
-
I haven’t ordered the bridge yet so I might get s high mass one and as you say rebate it and then raise the saddles......
-
I could always paint the top third pink to make proper neopolitan
-
Ding ding ding we have a winner!!!, I don’t think it will effect it too much as 5 of the 6 screws are flat but we’ll see.........
-
Got everything marked out to see how it will look I’ll be doing the belly carve on my lunch break today then I can’t really do anymore till the parts turn up Lets see if anyone can spot the slight mistake I made??.........
-
Got the top shaped and arm carve done, just got the belly carve to do tomorrow I wasn’t 100% happy with the top horn so I took a little bit off the bottom to thin it out a tad which I think looks better
-
It’s always good to hear a bit of “Green Day!!! I thought you might break out into a bit of “Longview” Them Wilkinson pickups sound good and that colour looks awesome especially when the light hits it!!! Great job l!!

I bet you will!! -
I didn’t think it was an original shape I just couldn’t decide how to describe it whether it was more of a singlecut or a Tbird-ish shape I’m not 100% sure about it it’s just a shape I’m playing about with.......
-
Now my other build has come to a bit of a stand still waiting for parts I thought I’d change the body on my unbranded P Bass which to be honest the body is not in that great condition I’m going to use all the hardware off the p bass and transplant it into the new body Heres what I’ve got in mind....... Is it a single cut or is it a modified Thunderbird shape? I don’t really know I just thought it might look good (The neck pocket is going to look slightly different to the pic) Haven’t decided what wood I’m going to make it out of I’ll have a hunt round and see what I can get..........
-
Got the body all cut and sanded..... I should get the shaping done tomorrow, but I now need to wait till the neck and pickups arrive so I can make the router template hopefully they should be here by the end of the month.........
