I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he doesn't show his ugly face again!! I've taken out a little bit more of the neck transition and it feels nice and comfortable, belly carve done and arm carve done I'm really pleased with my first attempt of making the neck from scratch Now to order the veneer, truss rod and fretboard ๐
-
Yeah that's the bit I mean, I rarely play down the dusty end but your right it does need a bit more out Also I noticed when I looked at the pic of the side on veiw that there's a slight hump roughly where the 12th fret is that needs smoothing out but the whole body is only sanded to 80grit at the moment....... ๐
-
I've contoured the neck and started shaping the back still got the belly carve to do I'm not sure whether I need to take a little but more out of the neck transition? Also I've still got to smooth off where the body meets the neck ๐

I love the pigeon head whilst he slapping some parts it looks like he's slapping with his palm, I can't slap really and I even know that looks very odd and terrible technique I find what is worse than this is when the likes of the x factor gets a 'band' on stage with the s**t singers amazingly they always have one lefty and one righty faking it!! Why not get some actual guitar/bass players to play live?? And not worry about how it looks!?! ๐คฌ

Yeah their the kiddy! I thought they looked a bit cheap and nasty and the fact they are plastic turned me off a bit!?! but it would be much easier as they are already 43mm I might just order one and give it a go and I'm probably going to buy a blank graphite nut and cut the slots myself aswell just to see which works better
-
I measured my Ibby 5 string and that has 16mm spacings and at the end of the fretboard the string width measured 60mm, so I think it will just be ok Where did you get your nut from? the only 43mm 5 string nut I could find is some crappy plastic adjustable acoustic bass nut
-
Thanks mate, I started shaping the neck today aswell I'll post some pics tomorrow ๐
-
What is your overall string spacing the smallest I can find is 64mm (16mm spacing) which is only 7mm wider than the bridge I'm going to replace? And the heel of the neck is 64mm so that should just fit without the strings falling over the sides of the neck? Did you shave a couple of mm of each side of the nut (45mm) aswell to get it down to 42mm?
-
Did you keep the same neck and just change the nut and change to smaller saddles so you could fit an extra one in? I'm not a fast or technical player either so it might be OK...... And save me some money
-
No I've just edited my last post it's more in your face than that!
-
You won't see the light strips on the top because it's being veneered but I wanted the back to be quite understated because the veneer on top is a bit 'in your face'........ ๐

Got some sanding done today.... Going to finish the headstock and start contouring the neck tomorrow ๐ฒ

What error I can't see anything wrong!?! ๐ -
I'm using my Ibby neck as a reference so I've made a couple of templates for the profile, Hopefully once I get started the fear will go? I'll probably get that started on Sunday It was really nice up there till I got attacked by a couple of Seagull (there was 3 pairs of chicks up on the roof) thier beaks are really sharp they drew blood
-
I let you off this once but please don't do it again ๐ I had to Google what a pederson jig was and they look like a brilliant idea it would take all the hard work out of it! This is the first neck I've done so the thought of contouring the neck makes my bum squeak a bit ๐ฅ I was down near your neck of the woods today enjoying the sun working on a roof that overlooks Puffin island
-
That neck taper jig is a really simple but brilliant idea it's a shame you didn't post it a few days ago I would have adopted for my build!! I need to make a radius jig but I won't be doing that for a while Do you shape the back of the neck by hand or do you use a jig? Because that's my next job over the weekend ๐

Because I'm swaying more to playing 5 string instead of 4 I thought I'd convert my '72 ish P bass onto a 5 string I have seen people doing this but keeping the 4 string neck and changing the nut and bridge, but to be honest I don't think I would be able to get on with the tight string spacing so I think I will get a 5 string neck and rout out the neck pocket and change it that way I'm still not 100% sure whether it's going to be a Tele or a Precision I'm leaning more toward a Tele but that could change? But here's the donor bass

โ72 style P Bass Kit Build finally FINISHED!!!
Jimothey replied to Jimothey's topic in Build Diaries
OK there's going to be another change to this bass, I now decided to convert this into a 5 string Tele or Precision I need to order a 5 string neck, bridge and pickups, I'll custom make the pickguard to fit this body The body I'll keep white and I'm still going to do the pickguard orange I'm not sure about whether to change the hardware to black or keep it chrome I'm then going to use the neck off this one on my telecaster shaped body build ๐ -
