1.
oooh, good taste and good tip! Where is an Aldi now? I will find out!
There's one in Gorgie, by McDonalds...
2. I like that colour! Maybe with a white pickguard? Although a capri orange Stingray would be very cool too.
3.
Can you remind me which tapewounds you use? I'm wondering about replacing the 4-year-old DRs on that ash jazz, and remember yours sounded rather good.
Mine are the D'Addario ETB92-5 set. They're .050 to .105 gauge (ignoring the B string). I put them on in September and the sound hasn't really changed much in 9 months. This is unusual for me as a set of Chromes has usually lost its brightness after 6 weeks when I've used them (they must not agree with my sweat!).
4. A fresh set of Chromes would do the job. I've heard that Rotosounds also fill the "bright flatwound" niche, but haven't tried them. Nylon tapewounds might also be worth a look, as my D'Addario tapes may even be a little brighter than Chromes once both are played in (although as a caveat, I didn't like the B string on the tapes, though others have had different results).
5. Eminence Legend 1028k alnico guitar speaker 10", 8 ohms impedance, 35 watts rated power handling . This are vintage style speakers based on the old Jensen P10r. One of these would be an excellent upgrade for any number of small 1x10" valve combos. This one has been used for around a year in a 15 watt combo, with occasional gigs, so it's broken in but still in excellent condition. The cone is visually in perfect condition - no marks, creases or tears. The best UK price I can find on a new 1028k is £61.95. I would like £30 for this one, and will post at cost within the UK. Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For is £8.90, or it can be couriered for around a fiver. It's the speaker on the left in these photographs.
6.
Or a Masterclass in attempting to avoid angry Americans getting ebay to remove your ad?
Yep, I think we could take an educated guess at what the rest of it looks like. It didn't work though, as when he relisted it, it still got pulled...
7.
* it isn't. Where's Bill when we need him?
I don't think I've ever seen him post outside the Amps & Cabs section, so he may not have seen this thread.
8. I've got to say, a trade show demo isn't the best way to hear any musician. It's really about demonstrating some sounds from the instruments, which it achieves. I'd rather hear some actual recorded works before forming an opinion (and I haven't done that yet, so I'll shut up!). Judging a musician on the basis of forum posting style or trade show demo videos is not going to give you a very complete picture of them.
9. Yeah, I'd agree with that. I didn't mean for those heights to be a particular target - what I really meant was that if your adjusters have the range, it's an interesting exercise to identify where "too low" and "too high" are for your own bass (fingerboard relief), strings and technique so that you can find that range in between.
10. Those knobs are great. I've got daubs of nail polish on my knurled tele knobs so I can see where they're set - your solution is a lot more elegant!
11. Nice one. The pirate beard ought to be a regular fixture!
12. My adjusters go quite low, so I've experimented with height a bit. For me there's an optimum height which works out at about 6.5-9mm from G to E (with Spiro Mittels). Any lower and the notes lose their body, much higher and I can't get the growl that I like. It's surprising how much difference a small change will make.
13. DR Black Beauty strings are pretty much standard roundwounds with a black coating, if that's what you're after. Black nylon tapewounds sound and feel very different, soft and flexible with a sound closer to flatwounds though still with a little brightness about the attack.
14. The other thing that seems to affect players perception of whether a given amp is "loud" or not is the taper of the volume control. I think makers do it deliberately, in the hope that less experienced players will turn it up to 9 o'clock in the shop and think "Man, that's loud, I've still got three quarters of the knob left" and buy the amp. Never mind that it probably starts clipping just past that...
15. I spotted the Tesco jobbie as glaringly harsh sounding, but got the other two the wrong way round. They certainly sounded different to me, but I couldn't have declared one or the other as obviously superior. I'm not sure if the test holds up as more than a quick bit of fun though.
16.
As for looking like them, I'd imagine that getting the 70's petty criminal look might be a bit difficult these days. Finding a powder-blue 'Bastard Suit' to fit could be a problem.
To fit? Surely fitting properly would detract from the look, if anything?
17. I think the high frequency for the HPF might not be a problem as it's a relatively shallow 6dB/octave roll-off. IIRC most other comparable devices use a steeper 12 or even 24db/octave filter so would need to be set lower.
18. It's weird, although I like a fair bit of fusion stuff, this performance doesn't click with me at all. I have some of the RTF stuff with DiMeola on (like Romantic Warrior), and I think the strong compositions and sheer imagination of it make the whole thing work, and I've rarely felt that way about DiMeola solo. I don't mean to diss the performance, but I find it interesting to try and figure out what the thing I like is that's missing here. Maybe you had to be there.
19.
Thing is, yanks idea of quality tends to be entirely based on the name badge and the made in band, with total disregard to any actual qualities of the item.
Says the man judging a huge swathe of people by their nationality rather than any actual qualities of individuals.
20. I had an Aphex Twin EP back in the 90s which had no indication of the speed on the label. As it contained only electronic sounds and heavily processed voices, it really wasn't obvious whether 33 or 45 was right. 33rpm sounded best to me, but I was disappointed when I heard the same tracks on a CD and found I'd got it wrong...
21.
I would contend that you are actually far more likely to have your amp fail on you than most basses , but very few non - pros have a back -up amp .
I carry a DI box for this reason. OK, it's not exactly the same, but it would get me through a gig.
22.
Scottish Gaelic punk
AFAIK this particular subgenre consists of one band! I've known a couple of their members...
23.
Best tone I ever heard - Shalamar - There It Is. Do any of you know anything about how it was achieved? CB
Ferret Ears! Once someone had pointed that out to me, I couldn't unhear it...
24.
Graham Maby (with Joe Jackson) has a cracking sound here:
He's playing nylon tapewounds with a pick, isn't he? Nice and grunty but without that metallic zing of roundwounds. I recorded a couple of tunes with my band last week where I was going for a similar sort of sound, so I'm enjoying this one.
