1.
Hugh Reed and The Velvet Underpants
A friend of mine was sacked from them. I have never quite found out why...
2. I've used a friend's green Russian muff which I repaired for him and owned the newer Bass Big Muff, and it's not a night and day difference between them if you ignore the blend mode on the BBM. I suspect there's as much variation between individual Russian muffs as there is between a given green Russian and most clones.
3. One more bump. It's sat in my front room not doing anything...
4. I don't think that would work on a forum this size. A lot of us are playing music that couldn't really be described as Jazz, Classical or Rockabilly, so which section would we use? Plus, there is no reason why players in one style might not have insights which are interesting to players in other styles.
5. I think you may be missing a fundamental point about musical performances (I mean that in the context of this discussion, not in general). Although you cite practical reasons for choosing the Pod, I think you actually use it because it's a piece of kit that you click with and find creatively enabling. This is quite a personal thing, and not everybody feels that way about the same bits of gear. If playing through a particular amp setup helps me to smile, relax and enjoy the gig, why on earth should I not use it whenever its feasible to?
6. How long do we give it before a certain poster pops up with yet another account name claiming to have bought one and raving about it?
7.
For me Mumford are one of those bands that belong in the category defined by well intentioned people starting off a sentence with 'you'll like this, it's folk music'.
Yes, I think this is the thing that winds up a lot of people about them, especially people who like folk music. I feel this way a little bit myself, but I don't hold the band responsible for it - the hype about how they're somehow the future of folk comes mostly from journalists.
8. Regarding the AC128s, it looks like you're trying to use them as clipping diodes for a passive fuzz. Why not just use a pair of germanium diodes there? Although I've tried this and found it to be of little use due to the volume drop. Most of us want things to get louder, not quieter when switching in a fuzz!
9. It's not hard to see why the number of active female members on Basschat can be counted on one hand...

11. I had to snigger at the song which went something like "Never met a rich man that I liked". I presume he makes an exception for JPJ, who is on the Sunday Times Rich List, AFAIK...
12. There's always the "report this item" link at the bottom of the page if you're worried someone may get ripped off.
13. They're playing a couple of tracks on 6 music right now. The bass is plenty audible on my 3" radio speaker, so that tone must work OK!
14. If you're really going to give this a shot, I'd imagine that the vibrations from the thin sheet metal panels would be a nightmare to control - you'd need to brace it heavily to stop them from rattling and booming.
15.
oooh, good taste and good tip! Where is an Aldi now? I will find out!
There's one in Gorgie, by McDonalds...
16. I like that colour! Maybe with a white pickguard? Although a capri orange Stingray would be very cool too.
17.
Can you remind me which tapewounds you use? I'm wondering about replacing the 4-year-old DRs on that ash jazz, and remember yours sounded rather good.
Mine are the D'Addario ETB92-5 set. They're .050 to .105 gauge (ignoring the B string). I put them on in September and the sound hasn't really changed much in 9 months. This is unusual for me as a set of Chromes has usually lost its brightness after 6 weeks when I've used them (they must not agree with my sweat!).
18. A fresh set of Chromes would do the job. I've heard that Rotosounds also fill the "bright flatwound" niche, but haven't tried them. Nylon tapewounds might also be worth a look, as my D'Addario tapes may even be a little brighter than Chromes once both are played in (although as a caveat, I didn't like the B string on the tapes, though others have had different results).
19. Eminence Legend 1028k alnico guitar speaker 10", 8 ohms impedance, 35 watts rated power handling . This are vintage style speakers based on the old Jensen P10r. One of these would be an excellent upgrade for any number of small 1x10" valve combos. This one has been used for around a year in a 15 watt combo, with occasional gigs, so it's broken in but still in excellent condition. The cone is visually in perfect condition - no marks, creases or tears. The best UK price I can find on a new 1028k is £61.95. I would like £30 for this one, and will post at cost within the UK. Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For is £8.90, or it can be couriered for around a fiver. It's the speaker on the left in these photographs.
20.
Or a Masterclass in attempting to avoid angry Americans getting ebay to remove your ad?
Yep, I think we could take an educated guess at what the rest of it looks like. It didn't work though, as when he relisted it, it still got pulled...
21.
* it isn't. Where's Bill when we need him?
I don't think I've ever seen him post outside the Amps & Cabs section, so he may not have seen this thread.
22. I've got to say, a trade show demo isn't the best way to hear any musician. It's really about demonstrating some sounds from the instruments, which it achieves. I'd rather hear some actual recorded works before forming an opinion (and I haven't done that yet, so I'll shut up!). Judging a musician on the basis of forum posting style or trade show demo videos is not going to give you a very complete picture of them.
23. Yeah, I'd agree with that. I didn't mean for those heights to be a particular target - what I really meant was that if your adjusters have the range, it's an interesting exercise to identify where "too low" and "too high" are for your own bass (fingerboard relief), strings and technique so that you can find that range in between.
24. Those knobs are great. I've got daubs of nail polish on my knurled tele knobs so I can see where they're set - your solution is a lot more elegant!
