1. Does anyone have any experience of Tis versus LaBella flats? I have a set of normal LaBella flats on my fretless SUB 'Ray and a set of black nylon ones on my Rob Allen. I like both fine but I'm looking to put flats on my GWB35 and, having never tried TIs, don't want to immediately just go with what I know. I would just try some, but these puppies are not the cheapest things out there.

  2. I love a dual P set up, much more robust sounding and full than a a P/J IMO and I once converted a Roadworn P to a double P but, as seems conventional, the added pickup was at the bridge end. An additional P in the neck position is certainly unusual but Billy Sheehan's monster 'bucker is up against the fretboard and he gets a pretty good tone in combination with a 'normal' position P and Lee Sklar's Frankenstein had two P pickups very wide apart with one very north.

  3. Having just purchased a Shure Beta58A, I'm selling my AKG D5. It's a great mic for warming up the audio source and I've used it for backing vox for a fair bit. It is only because I now sing a lot of lead and our soundman has said that I need something with more top end (I have a bassy baritone voice) that I am moving to the Shure. I'll post pics if people want some, but they will be rather dull and boring (rather like mics in general - dullest GAS ever!) but it is scratch and dent free, is always returned to its bag and has not been dropped. Tech spec is here http://www.akg.com/D...29.html?pid=944 How much I hear you ask? £25 to you lovely people, plus postage if not picked up from Ez Towers (£5?). Should you wish to pick it up you can also have my current Quilok boom stand for a mere £5 should you require one of these also (I won't post this as it's too bulky - weight is roughly 1.8k).
He never has I suppose and there have been other moments in his canon that have been questioned by the masses. Kudos for trying something else, but it's not for me. I'm sure that there are plenty who will love it though.

Bowie does film noir thriller theme tune with sixth form level lyrics shocker...

  5. I started on TB and then migrated to BC (best move ever!) it has a much bigger member list but is so vitriolic at times that some of the Off Topic debates here here seem like one of Jane Austen's tea parties.

To each their own, I guess - I've spent years trying to imitate that tone. One Gibson and a slightly dirty valve amp later and I think I'm finally getting close!
It's a tone that, with the rest of the band, sounds to die for, certainly my favourite JE tone. I was very surprised what it sounded like isolated.

  7. I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down - Paul Young (Pino)
Babooshka - Kate Bush (John Giblin)
Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel (Tony Levin)

Not originally played on fretless, but I like playing both Steely Dan's Josie and Rikki Don't Lose That Number without 'speed bumps' :)

  8. GAS requires no justification, she is just a cruel and harsh mistress. However, I did a similar thing many years ago with 4 stringers. Long story short, I still have the SUB and the full on 'party dress' version left many years ago. Having a finish that screams, "Go on, scratch and dent me, do your worst," is very liberating, but if you really want a nice shiny 'Ray fiver why not have the SUB refinished and save a bundle?
