1. Only a personal opinion but some people seem to change their gear more often than their underwear! I have 2 Markbass heads that i've used for the last 4 years (LM11 & LMK) & think they're great, Absolutely perfect for my requirements & have a very clean, true tone. And there-in lies the problem, i think, for some people..... My MB tone is fairly 'transparent' as i rely more on the individual tones of my basses... i.e my Alembic sounds like an Alembic, my Warwicks have 'that' growl etc. if that makes sense? I'm not suggesting that others are playing basses of 'lesser quality or tone' but, you kind of know what to expect when you plug a 'Precision' into a SVT (Bad analogy i know but you understand what i'm getting at?). One thing that took me a long time to understand was personal tone, everyone's is different, even using the same gear as a 'hero', what works for one player sounds like a wasp in a dustbin to someone else. Also there are a few manufactures out there now making these small/powerful heads, each with a different tone i.e a G.BENZ shuttle sounds different to a Eden to a MB etc with various extra functions such as comp/limiters, valve inputs, 3 band/4 band or graphic eq. I suppose it's what works for your bass & tone (whatever sound that is?, in your head or through your choice of cab) Other than that, i think we're all a bunch of fussy b*%$+#@'s with tone paranoia, when half the time we just need the one big volume knob on our amp to hear ourselves over the rest of the band!
2. When i first decided on 5 string, i found it a fairly easy transition, the only thing was then relying on the bottom 'B' as a thumb rest 'till i needed it ( a habit a lot of bass players seem to have or so i've noticed ) until you get used to the expanded 'vocabulary' of 5 strings. I suppose a lot depends on if you think about 'top to bottom string' or vice versa, if that makes sense? The only problem i have now is doing a gig entirely on a four string these days, i get lost without that low string
3. Feel i'm covered for most eventualities, if i need a fretless for anything i have the original neck for my stingray to swap over.
4. S/H Trace elliot MP11 or Ashdown Superfly? if you can find one that works? Dunno if the Ashdown was footswitchable....
5. Reminds me of some of those old Guild basses. Cool in some form of perverse way, but you wouldn't catch me playing one!
6. Yuck, just my oppinion, looks a bit like the guitar Alvin lee plays (AXIS i think?) Don't much care for Bongo's either altho i like how they sound. What is Mr Ball trying to do with the company? All these odd basses & special editions? The company was founded on the Stingray etc. & how many of those are still around? Just as Fender have stuck with various P & J basses & their variants, 'If it ain't broke don't fix it'! (IMO)
7.
That's amazing!! You are indeed 'a lucky guy'.. which may qualify as the understatement of the year!!
I do like a bit of 'Buck-eye' burl, my Rogue 5 string has the same....
8. Hi all, Finally got round to login in after about a year of moochin' the forum. My names Steve & i've been playing bass since '81 & it has been my main source of income since '98 ( i'm loathe to describe myself as 'professional' ). In my time i have also worked for the 'Essex bass mafia'.....Status Graphite & Trace Elliot in the late '80s early '90s. I spend my time playing around the uk with various bands, mostly cover/function work with the occasional studio session. My current collection of basses include: Alembic Rogue 5 string Warwick Thumb 5 string Warwick Corvette Pro 5 string Fender Jazz MIM 5 string Warwick Streamer SS1 4 string Musicman Stingray 4 string Status 3000 4 string All played through Markbass amps (LMK & LM11) & cabs. I've been following the forum for some time & it looks a cool place to hang out. Hope to speak to you soon about all things bass. Steve
