1. This is probably a stupid question, but what should I use to clean a matt finish bass? Should I treat it the same as a non varnished bass? Im just worried if cleaning fluids can permeate the paint its finished with.
2.
The MESA/Boogie rectifier range. I know its guitar gear but f*** me do these things annoy me. I am the bass player, I will deal with subsonic frequencies thank you very much. You just try not to get lost in the mix next to the other guitarists 30 watt orange. Thank god he saw the light and bought a JCM
+1 I keep having to tell my guitarist to drop the bass on that bloody amp.
3. Played at the Racehorse in Northampton on friday. We were meant to be on as main support, so the first band has finished playing and is taking thier kit off stage and im thinking i'll go an warm up a bit. The soundguy comes up to us and says that we need to be on now instead of the next band and mumbles some excuse. So its kinda rushed, but we think nothing of it and get on and play. There arent many people in the room, but the atmospheres all good so that not bad. After playing and tearing down we see the next band get up and the room suddenly fills up. Turns out the band is the soundguys own band and they wanted to be main support. To make it even more annoying when we were playing all those people were stood around drinking outside and only came in when the soundguy asked them too. Arseholes.
4. Ive used Phantom screenprint for the last 3 batches of t-shirts my band has done. They arent too badly priced and the print hasnt come off after washing the ones us band members have.
5. I could just be making this up, but it isnt Glockenlang or something is it?
6. Looking good man! I'll need to come over and listen to it sometime soon!
7. Play some 1349 if you want some nice fast riffs. Maybe try some Behemoth and early Dissection (Somberlain era). Ive been listening to a lot of Watain recently and even though most of the songs are fast but easy, there are some nice little bass runs throughout the place. Play any Gorgoroth from Under The Sign of Hell too. For a bit of Death metal check out Bloodbath. They're a bit more of a groove ridden Death metal band. +1 on the Dimmu and Enslaved.
8. Find a bass that plays comfortably, then worry about everything else after that. I play in a black metal/death metal band at the moment and am getting a jazz bass for it.
9. Nice one, glad to hear its all sorted. So....you going to get an EBS? :brow:
10. Since being in my current band I have used a Sandberg California PM (p style bass), a Sandberg Bullet II with a musicman style pickup, a Musicman Sterling and I am getting a J style bass very soon. All of these have worked well for me and after a couple of small tweaks with EQ can all punch through a wall of sound. Just get what you want and you'll find a way to make it work.
11.
Yes, there is that, but it would be nice if the promotor actually did some promoting. In stoke, they will put band names on a poster in the venue and maybe on the door of the venue. Apart from that there is absolutely nothing. Anyone can book bands and hand out tickets, promotors should be promoting shouldn't they?
+1 Obviously bands should push stuff as much as they can, but when you're trying to play in other cities you cant exactly pop down there with posters and flyers and promote 100% yourself. There are good promoters out there and im lucky that there are a couple of good ones here in Peterborough, but quite often you get the feeling that promoters cant be bothered.
12. Yeah we have had this problem too. Most of them are pretty ignorant and will never get back to you. A few months back we send out messages to over 50 promoters and only 8 or so got back to us. What is most annoying is that myspace seems to be the only way to contact half of these people, so they can easily ignore you. Recently we have been getting a few more responses, so that is heartening, but it is still extremely hard trying to get gigs at the moment. Luckily weve started to get to know a few of them and they have helped get us on better shows.
13.
My cab is here too, so if you ever want to rock 2 cabs to look awesome you can borrow it! If Middenhelm ever do a video, you must do this.
I may just have to do that for practise, so I can destroy Chris' ears when he overplays on the keys!
Yeah, I would agree that the Fafner is a bit more grittier sounding and a bit dirtier, but not by all that much really. I think you can just about dial in the same kind of sound on the TD 650, but as the Fafner looks more like a rock head, the difference in sound appears greater than it actually is. That last sentence didn't make much sense sorry! Anyway, lots of HiFi sounding slap guys have used the Fafner too though, so it is pretty versatile as well, though probably not as much as the 650. But for me, both heads sound great, the Fafner has the looks and a (slightly) grittier sound and the 650 has the features and versatility. I don't need the features though and couldn't be happier with the Fafner!
Yeah I have to say that the Fafner looks awesome. Im surprised that Amon Amarth dont use that head, as it has the viking runes on it.
14. I think the Fafner is more 'tube' sounding and possibly has a slightly grittier sound from what I can work out. Get a Fafner and if you dont like the sound i'll swap it with my TD650 haha. I was really torn between the Fafner and the TD650 and went for the 650 as it seemed like it was more versatile.
15. Mwahahaha, have I got you hit by a gas attack? I have to say after hearing your jazz through it, im even more exciting about recieving my JM4 now. Nice playing by the way, that funky number near the end of the set was really good.
16. You can borrow my TD650 for the gig tomorrow if you want? You wanted to try it anyway, so is a good opportunity.
17. Get an EBS Fafner. There was one in the for sale section recently. They go down to 2Ohms, sound very valve like, are loud and look very metal. I play in a Black/Thrash metal band and have to compete with an ENGL and Mesa through 4x12's and getting my EBS has been a godsend. I have the TD650 which is slightly more HIFI sounding than the Fafner, but I can imagine that working out pretty well for you too.
18.
Even if your guitarist won't turn down much, if he'll just free up some space in the high midrange for you then the problem will be solved. Easier said than done but so worth trying! Alex
+1 Ive been having trouble cutting through the mix with my band recently (2x guitarists, loud drummer and keyboards, so not the easiest to find sonic space with) and I sat with my guitarists and got them to drop the bass on thier amps a bit. Now im finding I sit in the mix a lot better and we complement each other a hell of a lot more.
19. I used an Ampeg B2R for about 4 years, with metal and hardcore bands and never had a problem with it. It seemed like an extremely solid amp and because it was solidstate there was no worry about having to change out valves etc. I ran mine alongside an Ampeg Classic 4x10, which I still use. Tonally I never had any issues getting the sound I wanted (but I like fairly clean mid heavy sound) and as far as im concerned they have the 'Ampeg tone'. The only fault I had with it, was that it wasnt very loud, but that didnt matter half the time, unless I was having to play a mid sized venue without a DI (which only happened a couple of times) Try and find somewhere to check one out, im sure there will be a music shop nearish you that stocks Ampeg.
20. Ive had a Gator 4u for about 4 years and its done me well, its been beaten badly but kept everything protected. BUT the bloody handles have been sliding out of the slots for over a year and everyone I know who uses Gator cases has the same problem. This can get really annoying and I have had my case drop out of my hands as the handle fell out. I am getting myself an SKB case now as they look a lot sturdier in the handle dept.
21. Come over and try mine out Fosk. I had it sounding very nice on thursday at my gig. You could even take it for a spin at your next show if you want to see how it handles at high volumes.
22. Geoff

24 fret bass.
If you've got a Sandberg dealer near you, have a chat with them. Not seen a 24 fret neck, but you never know....
My Sandberg Bullet II has got 24 frets, but I dont know where you could try before you buy on one.
23. Sounds like they just got unlucky. My singer got caught out in France when he was in one of his old bands. They were stopped by the French police and had thier passports taken until a 'fine' was paid.
24.
If you dont mind about 70lbs plus removable casters, seriously check Aguilar DB212s. I am VERY impressed with mine. Thick, full, articulate, and throaty. They are VERY loud....even one 8 ohm one. Excellent cabs.

Dont worry about not being heard, i play in an aggressive metal band and thought it would never work, thats why it stayed at home for over a year. I recorded with it and then tried it in a live situation and the difference was amazing.
Looks like im going to have to try the Eden and Aguilar cabs by the sounds of it! Im going to London on friday so i'll see what I can find. Longtimefred, do your tunes on your myspace have the Eden on the recording?
25. Cheers for the answers guys. As usual I think its going to be a matter of just trying stuff out and see what suits me then. I just wish you could try before you buy in a live environment sometimes! whynot, thanks for the offer of checking the Tecamp. I noticed your post in the for sale section and was tempted, but as usual I dont have the money here and now. Chris_b - Agreed about the Ampeg. I like the sound at lower volumes, but as soon as im playing in a loud environment it doesnt seem to cut through very well. Saying that though, its an 8Ohm cab, so im probably not pushing my amp anywhere near its capabilities and maybe its just a volume issue.
