  1. Hello. I've not posted on here for several years (kids, job etc) but have just got a new bass so thought I'd put something up as im always interested reading others NBDs. I tested this against a 40th anniversary vintage squier in the shop but for me the sire was hands down nicer to play, and a bit cheaper. I've not owned a load of basses(think this is my 4th, over the last 30 yrs or so) and none of them have been expensive ones but the neck is certainly the nicest I've ever felt. I marginally preferred the look of the squier but thought the sire looks much better in the flesh than in pictures (but have included a rubbish pic in any event 😉). In my limited experience id say it sounds a bit brighter than tje stereotypical p bass sound but still sounds good to me. I play in a church and thought it fit in well tonally when playing with the band with the tone about halfway. I noticed its a bit lower output than my squier VM Jazz. Im pleased with it and think its good value for money.
  2. Thanks mate. The case was just the one the bloke had who sold it to me. It does fit perfectly. It doesn't have an obvious brand though so can't be very helpful on that one, sorry.
  3. Good point. Hope this works...
  4. Thanks guys I've only had 2 basses before this and this just feels right somehow. Rexel matador- the vmj is marginally heavier than my ibanez 5 (which I've always considered to be light) but it is certainly not a heavy bass. I read on here that there is some variation and I think it happens to be on the lighter side.
  5. Well. After playing it I've gone for a squier vm jazz bass. I'm really pleased with it. To me it seems to sound and play really nicely. Ends up my question was irrelevant but thanks to all for the input.
  6. .....GAS being a given, of course.
  7. Thanks for the input all. I understand that for some a 5 is no more complicated but I just want a 4 string basically. In a curve ball move I'm now considering a 2014 squire vintage modified jazz bass which has come up near me. I played a jazz bass and liked the neck of that. I would think that's at least on par with the aforementioned two basses....I think.
  8. I'm very new here and recently came back to the bass after a few years where life got in the way. I have an ibanez gsr205 5 string which is about 12 years old. Nothing wrong with it but I bought it new when I was in my 20s thinking it's just cool to have 5 strings. I now want to get a 4 string to get back to basics. I like the thin neck and relative light weight of my current bass. With a budget of about 250 quid the trbx 174 and the sr300 seem to be a couple of options which jump out at me. I've small kids so want something which will last a few years as I can't see myself with spare money to upgrade for a while yet! At the moment this is really just for home practice etc. Anyone got any experience with either (or both) of these.
  9. Bought a practice amp off Sam. Well pleased with it. Responsive and friendly chap and amp exactly as described. Recommend dealing with him.
  10. Thanks guys. Good to know that others have had time away from it and get right back in there again!
  11. Hello all. I played bass in my bedroom and in a few bands during my teens and early 20s. Then what with life changing and all that my bass ended up in my parents loft for about ten years. A couple of weeks ago I got it out and the joy I've had from just playing a few things I remember and learning a few new ones has been amazing. Loving it. Need to put on some new strings and get on making up for lost time! I'm sure there's a wealth of knowledge on here and look forward to learning more and more. Cheers.
