I would argue that your ability is largely irrelevant. if you love the instrument, and want something special building then go for it! Just because someone owns a Ferrari or some other performance car, doesnt necessarily mean they can drive like a certain michael schumacher. Its about appreciating the machine rather than them automatically being a good driver. A high end bass should bring the best out of your playing and, as has (i think) already been mentioned, inspire you to play. you dont have to be Matt Garrison or some other such virtuoso to 'merit' getting a custom bass made for you. go for it and enjoy it!
This, all 'o this!
 2.
Worth noting and a very good point Sterling's personality (and I have met him personally a few times) has almost no bearing on the quality of the basses he has made if any. His antics may influence our decision to buy one or not (I won't buy a new one) but it should not cross over into our perceptions of the actual quality of his work.
Definatly, their products are undeniably well made, and very good sounding, I'm not a fan of the oil neck finish, but thats personal taste, for those that do like it, it's also expertly done, I'd bet.
 3.
Because to say that you only buy things from people you like is a complete lie
Huh?! If I don't like someone, I don't buy their product, visit their store, and will speak to them as little as possible, how is that a lie?
and then not to buy a guitar because you don't like the CEO of the company would tell that you really never had and intention of buying one anyway.
Not really, often people are intrested in a guitar or product, and during the course of investigating it, end up crossing paths of the company with bad results, or can see a bad reputation, and change their minds.
Maybe first impression are right I see there is some sense here but this whole bp= ...... crap is school ground bullsh*te.
Thanks for raising the level of discourse with wit and maturity, though.
It serves no purpose. If you don't like ebmm don't buy them it kinda simple really.
Uh, isn't that the whole point of people saying they're not buying them.....
 4. 22 fret neck, with a thinner profile, rather than a Stingray's 21 fret thicker neck. Smaller body, of course. A ceramic magnet pickup, rather than the Stingray's alnico magnet pickup.
 5. Pedulla, Zon, Roscoe(I have a fretless one that I utterly love) & Rob Allen are the ones that usually come up IME, of course it all depends on the sound you're after.
 6.
i love the guys who gave it the whole "i was going to buy a stingray but not after reading that" yeah yeah buy a bass because you like or love it.
Why should I buy a bass that I like(or love) by a company I don't like, when I can buy a bass that I both love as an instrument, and respect the builder/luthier/company?
 7. Cool bass, love the black blocks and binding.
 8.
I think it would be actually useful for you to tell us your story, would you want anyone else here falling foul of whichever company this is?
Exactly. Thats why the unfortunate storys are so important.
 9. Ahhhhh, EBMM's customer relations is classy as ever....
 10.
Cheap acoustic basses can be a tad clunky and suffer from uneven tone/output (IMO) . I got an Ibanez for £160 new on special offer about a year ago. It's the cheapest one they do but all the basics are right. This is the one http://www.dv247.com/guitars/ibanez-aeb8e-...s-guitar--35479 Go for a trusted brand name. As for six string acoustics , the guy from Jethro Tull has one (David Goodier) No idea what it is.
Hard to see, in the small pic, but it looks like a Chris Larkin, he's a luthier in Ireland. In fact, I'd hazard a guess its the fretted one pictured here.....
 11. The pickup being wired in parallel, rather than the standard series humbucker wiring, and a boost from the pre-amp has a lot to do with it.
 12. I can use either, but prefer lines. They come in handy when I can't hear myself, as I can get relatively in tune anyway(I have my lined ones well intonated to the lines), and for chords, they're a godsend.
 13.
however, playing near the bridge(s) yields a very tight almost `fretted' tone but with a touch of mwah still evident.
Well, in fairness, rather than having no frets, you just have one reallllllllllly big one!
 14. I do love them delta metal fingerboards, congrats.
 15.
A) A Phil Lynott sig P Bass (seing as Rory Gallagher go a strat) Obviously a black 70´s style Precision to begin with, p and J pups, Chrome mirror scratchplate. A Squier version could simply be that Special Edition Precision Mirror one that was around a few years ago, but without the matching headstock
There actually was a Phil Lynott sig bass, but it was only released in Japan, for some unknown reason....... Oh, another Irish bassist who should have a sig, Barry Devlin. 70's Jazz Bass, Sunburst, Black pickguard(or tort), maple fingerboard with black blocks and binding, FRETLESS.
 16.
the string were maybe a bit too close to the fretboard for my liking however its good for my picking etc and i know is trustwrothy from reviews
You can easily raise the strings, via the bridge.
 17.
Finding the bridge PUP is louder than the neck PUP. It's not problematic, but is evident perhaps to the same degree as retro-installed J-PUPs tended to be quieter than original P-PUPs in 70's Precisions. Is this normal with Rics?
I find the same with my SD Rick pickups. I was thinking of popping in a cheap toaster pickup, at some time, though I do like the SD neck pickups tone. I did try wiring the bridge pickup in parallel, the output matched much better, but the tone lost its snarl.
 18. Set my amp either flat, or a very slight mid boost, tweeter in the speaker turned off. Then I just use whatever bass sounds the way I want it to, i.e. if I want a P bass grind, use a P bass, let the basses natural tone shine.
 19.
sounds like you fitted a ''1'' on a Fender?, they built the ''2'' for Fenders because of this.
I've heard of the 2 often being too thick to get really low action on Fenders as well as the 1.
 20. Never used one, but I hear they can be hard to get low action on, because of their large baseplate. I'd probably go for a Hipshot, with quickloading, if I could have any bridge.
 21.
If I recall correctly the original ric bass neck pups were 6-pole pickups from their lead guitar range, no mods, used as-is; that may horrify many of you!
It wouldn't bother me, but, out of curiosity, did they change to four pole?
 22.
My plan is to use it in the bridge position, in series. How are the pups wired when in thier conventional settings (individualy mounted) on a jazz bass? I'm going to build a test bed body , ie a thin board with built up neck block and tail piece so that I can experiment with pick up types and positions , I want to be able to slide pick ups in and out from under the strings.
Standard on a J bass is parallel. Series is louder and with more mids, can get muddy, parallel, is lower volume, but more lows and highs. They'll be fine in the bridge position, in series.
