1.
Yes a big thank you to Roger and Owen is in order, cheers guys
Huge +1 thanks Roger & Owen! it was a great day. Cheers Geoff
 2. I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow, it should be a great day! I'm bringing my bass with Evah weichs if anyone fancies having a try. Cheers Geoff
 3. Hey Clarky, sorry to hear that and I hope you are on the mend. I was thinking it may be worth considering down tuned solo strings. I've never done it, but I know some guys love them. I think the Velvets sound like a great place to start though. Best of luck, cheers Geoff
 4.
A credit card.
:-) I hear you on that one!
 5.
Thanks Geoff. I'll be looking at your excellent vids later too. It's only that hand rotation trick on the E string that's a problem. I'm fine with the rest. btw, here's a q for you (while I have your attention ) I'm getting my reading going by playing lots of transcription material, especially my hero Ray brown. Is it worth the effort trying to memorise full transcriptions? Do folks do that much?

Aha! Thanks for the advice guys about playing lower down the board with the right hand. I think I've sourced the problem. When I bend my elbow much and play a bit up from the end of the board, something about the angle means that when I do the wrist action to play on the E, there's a reluctance to alternate first and second fingers. I wasn't aware that I was playing mostly with my first finger, and no wonder I was having control problems in faster passages. For some reason, when I play further down the board I alternate fingers naturally (while still revolving the wrist to a degree). Better timing. More consistent sound. Thanks again.
Hey Fatback, great to hear you have got to the bottom of it. RE: transcription. I tend to focus on learning phrases and playing them in loads of different contexts, rather than learn full transcriptions, especially in walking bass lines. For solos there's certainly no harm in learning a full one, but you could still just focus on learning the phrases that catch your attention and you can use.....both ways work really, so maybe mix it up. Good luck, it's a great thing to work on! Cheers Geoff
 6.
Interesting you ask. I have to remind myself all the time while playing to extend my arm so my hand is down closer to the end. I'm inclined to stick my elbow out. I hadn't thought it might help with that wrist biz, so i'll watch that at practice tonight.
+1 I find I get a better, more focused tone near the end of the fingerboard....but I still have to open the elbow a bit to allow it to fall. I find for right hand technique that string crossing exercises with open strings and a metronome are really useful. I also look at my right hand either directly or in a mirror when Im working on it in isolation. The other thing to always bear in mind is to try and stay as relaxed as possible....Good luck with your practice, I hope it goes well, cheers Geoff
 7. Here's a new lesson on one of my favourite aspects of playing bass, pedal tones. I've also teamed up with guitarist Danny Maddocks who's accompanying me on the standard Beautiful Love. I hope you enjoy it! Cheers Geoff http://youtu.be/rTz_85Wvgnw
 8. This looks really interesting and I bet it will pair up nicely with the Full Circle...I'm interested to hear if anyone has taken the plunge!
 9.
I'm loving these lessons. I'm an EUB virgin (I know it's not a real DB, but I can't fit a real one in the house) and the stuff about hand positioning has already made playing so much easier.
Glad they are helping and I think the Stagg basses are a great instrument to get started with...they really do sound great, play well and are amazing value!
Another good lesson Geoff, it is interesting what you say about not worrying too much on the gig, generally I dont and the audience appear to have enjoyed it so I will continue to try not to get too hung up on that live. I agree about the tuner too, I used a polytune at first which got me in the ballpark but I did find myself looking at it all the time rather than listening! I forget how far I have come from day one but trying to find the first few notes was a challenge at first without it "are they really that far apart?, is the A on the E string really that far up the neck!", Jake will tell you my problem area is still the 5th to 7th notes on each string, I really have to reach for them usually coming up flat for the first minutes practice but I am getting there Thanks again
Hey Pete, that's good to hear its going well and I agree about the 5th-7th notes as just before you reach the neck heel can be pretty tricky. For me shifting fixed that as if I can move from half position accurately it all works a lot better. I'm looking forward to catching up at the bass bash in October, its going to be a great day and really good fun to put a face to a name with my fellow basschatters! :-)
 10.
I have a yita music one, they sell via Ebay, I was told they were good on here and when Jake Newman came to give me my first lesson he liked it so much he has since bought himself one, personally I think it must be faulty because it sounds terrible when I use it
+1 I have played a Yita bow which I liked and was great value for the price. It was a few years ago, but it seems worth considering. I'm interested to see what comes up as never know where to recommend when it comes to beginners bows...or even decent bows in the UK. I play german pattern which makes less choice but it would be great to go to a double bass show like the one in Amsterdam at the moment and try a load out.
 11. Here's a new lesson on how to tell if you are playing in tune...and it doesn't involve adding frets
 12. Good to hear, that's great service!

 15. Hi Everyone, I've just released a new lesson on using vibrato to play with more expression. I hope you enjoy it, Cheers Geoff http://youtu.be/EAUCSTAfa8U
 16. +1 this is an incredible bass. I've played it several times when Scott had it. It really is a fantastic instrument.
 17.
Don't know whether it comes with a bag If anyone else buys one of these - please let us know, as I may well opt for one of these simple stands... Slightly off topic, but along the same lines, and re the post above, by Andrew Sometime back, I bought one of these to act as stand for bass guitar Just thought I'd give these the nod, as it saves carting another stand around... Of course, your amp has to be covered in material which will work with velcro and be tall enough - my CMD 102 combo is, when tilted back It's very small and light, and works very well as stand for my spare bass http://www.richtonemusic.co.uk/products/markbass_bass_keeper_bass_holder.asp?gclid=CJewnqLZjcACFerpwgodMiYAdg Just thought a few DB'ers who double up with BG may want to know of this useful item Marc
I always carry a hand towel/bar towel when playing to wipe my hands/clean neck etc. I thread it through the side handle of the cab and use it to tie around the neck of my electric. It works REALLY well and is great for keeping the electic bass secure + no stand to carry.
 18.
I've got Bakers but I lust after hatpegs. Same way as I've got my wife but....................oh, never mind.
:-) I know what you mean....Bakers do look awesome though.
 19.
My newly acquired "Miss Nikolova"... Bulgarian master built, circa 15 years old...
Sweet bass!
 20. I've not played one but have only heard good things about them. I think renting sounds like a good way to get started.
 21. Here's some pics of my bass. It's not a great looking pedigree bass as it's had a lot of work over the years and has a new front and neck, but it plays well and sounds good so I'm happy.
 22. Hey Paul, I hope you're well mate and it's good to see you on here! I would go for 2...or possibly between 2 and 3. I would also try to keep your wrist straight which may mean raising your elbow to let the arm weight go straight into the thumb. Good luck mate, cheers Geoff
