  1. The 10-hour round trip from south Wales may be a bit of a stretch, but certainly worth it if you can mange it.
  2. Are you in Bristol? I need a gig bag for a Bryant bass that’s currently living on the floor in the loft (don’t ask). Would it fit do you think?
  3. Not sure if you can get a credit card and pay that back, but you’d get a better deal on here buying second hand. To get you gigging, you also need: - A pickup - Bag - Pre-amp / HPF When I started I got all that on here for £500.
  4. I’m going through my bass books today. Send me a message and I’ll zip you across a few that you might find useful (free, this isn’t me trying to make money!)
  5. PM sent! This is 100% what I need this week. Hoping I’m in first on this!
  6. What do you want to achieve on bass that you can’t already do? There are plenty of bass players who can’t read music, don’t know their scales or arpeggios, or modes and still get paid. Don’t do something because you feel you should. Do it because you want to! Sit down and figure out your goals. If it’s to play gigs and have fun, then figure out your path to get there. If it’s to sight read complex passages, all good. oh, and you can achieve everything you want to on a 5-string bass. Do not buy more gear.

  8. Excellent advice. I think you can still rent a bass with the violin shop, so that’s an option too. As soon as you play DB I was offered gigs that were far beyond my ability, in many cases because of the aesthetic. Im pretty awful and I still get paid (mad world). The guys here are proper gigging experts so I’d go with what they recommend.
  9. Agreed. You need to find a EUB with the correct scale length so you can apply the same technique. You should also try and find a bass with genuine DB strings and learn how to pull the string back using your bicep (not using your thumb as a pivot). Playing DB is hard and you need to put in a lot of hours to get anywhere near competent. I can busk a jazz gig but earn my cash playing blues in a loud band where my technique is less apparent. I wish you well in your DB adventures and I’d love to hear how you get on.
  10. This is bass direct I should say
  11. I had a bass that was similarly not as described. After an hour I decided I couldn’t live with it, emailed and had a refund processed very quickly. The bass was picked up the next day and it all went smoothly.
  12. Crikey that is controversial…!
  13. No wonder Jamie Cullum never called back.
  14. Olympic white sounds 26% better than sunburst. Candy apple red is 42% better!
  15. The large chords are for melody-instruments and soloing. The smaller chords are the bass notes. The melody players will need you to play these notes to bounce off, so keep it simple and avoid substitutions I’d say.
  16. “Guitarist wanted. Must have pro gear, the right attitude and £600 to pay for the PA.” Not sure it’ll be a huge success!
  17. What a wonderful thing to do. It must have meant a lot to him.
  18. No worries! I couldn’t remember who I sold it to.
  19. Is this my old one? That bass was considered the best original 64” that the vintage shop has ever seen. Nothing had ever been touched on it and they had every minute of its existence documented through the family.
  20. Filthy old bass for the same price as a terraced house in Wales. I know why I’d buy!
  21. Richard is a thoroughly lovely chap and we’ve done a few deals, just thought it was worth mentioning. Think I had your old SLB Chris. Was a beautiful thing and that’s what I need now for practice. My aluminium bass is the love of my life but too loud when the kids are asleep! When I’ve picked up the SLB, you’re more than welcome to give it a try Richard if you’d like?
  22. I’ve already paid a deposit for the SLB 200 so that might help your decisions.
  23. Here’s the jazz bass… https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_jb_62cc_dr.htm
  24. Not sure if anyone has seen this but Thomman is knocking 25% off some best selling basses and guitars. https://www.thomann.de/gb/social_harley-benton-25.html You can get the absolutely incredible jazz bass (I have one and it’s very very good) for £102. This is an incredible price.
  25. I had this in one band. They expected the singer to pay, operate, and maintain a PA.
