1.
Turned on my TE combo and cab tonight only for it to make a weird noise, it did this for about three seconds, then a rather startled young cat emerged from one of the big plastic holes. Stupid cat, now I am going to have to work out a way to check them before I head off to gigs.
I hope neither cat nor cab suffered damage. I considered putting chicken wire over the reflex ports on my 1818 for the same reason. I decided not to make it more attractive to chickens however as our cats would leave feathers EVERYWHERE. I reckon there may have been a few litters of kittens birthed in bass bins over the years. They do seem purpose built!
 2.
Hi, So wanting to remove a dodgy Fender decal of the headstock off a recent purchase and looking for he best method to do so. Haven't got the bass yet so can't see if the decal is under a coat but interested to know if anybodies experience with trying to do so. I could keep the Fender decal on there (believe it's the kind that comes with the American vintage 64 j-bass but leaning towards applying my own custom decal instead (I'm not proud;). Any ideas? Dan
You might consider putting a Coors sticker over your Bass avatar. The brewery is now American owned. As for the Fender decal, why not leave it but overlay it with one of these;
 3.
...I have a Fishman SA-220 column PA for those small, intimate gigs and I love it to bits. Every musician who has played through it has commented on how great it sounds. It works perfectly. There's nothing wrong with it. I have no need of a replacement or upgrade...
That would be the one you brought to Risley in October last? That was impressive.
 4. My Squier's dead spot was on the D at the ninth fret position IIRC. I didn't play it long enough to discover any more, the one was enough to put me off it for good.
 5.
...I meant sound absorbing thingummies dangling from the ceiling!...
Oh right... suspended acoustic baffles.
 6. I'll get shot down for saying but have you considered a twist right out of the eighties? Use a reel to reel to make your own backing tracks and have it highly visible on stage with you. Think I'll put on my kevlar vest and Y-fronts on now...
 7.
Anybody else with me that thinking the dead spot problem is wildly over exaggerated? Yes, there are basses with dead spots... but there are not in abundance like basschat folklore would suggest?
Yes. When you've found one you want to tell everyone about it because it is such an intangible phenomenon otherwise. It may well be exaggerated as a result. I never used a Ray but the first (and only) Squier I owned had one. The guitar was a fretless Jazz. The trouble with dead spots is that once you've found one, it is always in the back of your mind and it deflates your confidence in the instrument. Mine might have had more than one dead spot but I handed it back after a week. I traded it in for my Vantage. I thought at first that the finger board had a depression where the note died off but it was confirmed that the finger board was fine. I put it down to resonance caused by the massive headstock cancelling out certain frequencies in the same way that noise cancelling headphones use reverse phasing. At the shop I had a hard time convincing them I had a problem at all but they were very happy to make me an offer on the trade in. I am pretty sure it went back up for sale as "new". Does the Flea sigbass address the issue at all?
 8. I have fond memories of Torquay and in particular Totness. When my uncle was alive I used to spend lots of quality time there. I wasn't a bass junkie then though so I'm of no help to you (OP), sorry.
 9. 'We've listened to every kind of musical style since we started playing,' they say. 'In the beginning we listened to psychedelia and 60s blues. From Canned Heat we went backwards; our sound arises from an chemical experiment that mixes the edge of Hound Dog Taylor's well wheel, Skip James' darkness, Jon Lee Hooker's hypnotic rhythms, Screaming Jay Hawkins' craziness, Tampa Red's sweetness, Elmore James' killer slide and Son House's essence.' https://www.list.co.uk/event/535945-guadalupe-plata/ I'll have a pint of "essence" please.
 10. I dunno. You lot. If you don't like it - tough. It's that or do all of your shopping in high street retail outlets where customer service is still put into practice. I agree it's good to be informative with potential buyers but remember a lot of sellers are saying the same sort of things about buyers.
 11. I thought it was about rail services.
 12.
...Maybe some day go on a little excursion nearer you... if it happens I'll let you know
Cheers. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. If the saxophonist is doing the serious business for the band and he's good at dropping in and out where the tune demands, he'd make an ideal band co-ordinator/leader. I don't know or want to know the proposed politics of the band as that's such a personal thing but if it means the bass player has not got to do all the leg work it's a winning idea.
 13. Gosh that was dark.
 14.
I have discovered that at low volume 2 Ashdown Mibass 1x10 cabs sound better than my Barefaced Super 12t. I bought the two 10" cabs recently as they seemed to be at a good price, and were in exceptional condition. Also I was using my BF for rehearsal and smaller gigs, and was becoming increasingly worried about damage, particularly as it has the cloth front. My intention was to buy just one of these little Ashdown cabs...@250 watts, but they looked so good together, I couldn't resist the two of 'em. (So now I am up to 500 watts.) Anyway, I presume these two little cabs sound better than the BF at low volume, as the BF has to be pushed a bit to get the best out of it, whereas the little Ashdowns are being worked harder, and being smaller speakers create more 'perceived' volume than the BF does when only just ticking over. In no way am I suggesting that the Ashdowns are a better cab, or sound better than the BF, as in my opinion, nothing sounds better than the BF when it is is being pushed a bit, it's just that in a rehearsal room, playing in a small venue, or unplugged, the power and tone of the BF does not have a chance to manifest itself, whereas the Ashdown cabs do... A bit like using a Sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Would I be correct in assuming this is the case, and have any of you guys found something similar...
For this comparison, were you using them in a domestic sized room?
 15. Let us know if the band gets gigs as far south as Swarkestone Bridge then. Sounds like a worthy project.
 16. If you find prat falls attractive what does that make you?
 17. I agree with Steve above. Maybe don't sell it as a sax based thing. If you do, you're likely to get an audience expecting Gerry Rafferty and Billy Joel style tunes. I like both artists but I doubt they'd fit your rock themed set. Then again, tunes by those artists might be useful for your repertoire if you get an older crowd on occasion.
 18.
..it might be possible to convince them to utilise the local "man shed" for retired chaps to make some dangle absorbing devices...
Come again?
 19.
Just wondering if anyone's had experience of column/sub all-in-one PAs like this one? http://www.djkit.com...CFUg6GwodwKELag I'm looking into options for our local community centre which will be a one-PA-fits-all solution that can be moved easily - the hall is max size 700 capacity and that can be split into 150 capacity sections for smaller events. It has to work equally well for metal and folk, and the directionality of these sort-of line arrays would definitely be a Good Thing as the cieling is very high, and as a result the room is quite echoey...
I've heard a similar system being used at our local folk and acoustic night. Smaller venue, the function room of the Vernon Arms, Spondon, with low ceilings and lots of reflective room structure. Might seat 150. The band had an EUB. It worked well. Metal? Not sure.
 20.
Been given two exercise / practice pieces by my instructor and have got a bit hooked on playing them as they're two of my favourite tracks. The first is 'Sunshine of your Love' by Cream and the second is 'Cars' by Gary Newman; having a bit of trouble getting the chorus up to speed, but I'll get there...
You're not the only one... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI_jFI8_slg
 21.
Alive by Pearl Jam, off one of my favourite albums and great to play. So what tunes are other basschatters enjoying playing?
I've just listened to the box set that Twigman posted about. Sad Lovers and Giants' five disc compilation; http://basschat.co.u...-a-box-set-out/ I'd not heard of them before but they encapsulated the feeling of music in the eighties in a way that went down superbly well. Their later stuff developed comfortably and sat very well with nineties' styles as well. It's not often that I invest in a band that I don't know. I have no regrets on this purchase.
 22.
Exactly, that's why I'm looking for a humane solution
http://basschat.co.uk/topic/306709-its-a-catastrophe/page__view__findpost__p__3312045
 23.
We gigged Saturday and a couple of the blokes in the band were talking about Ringo Starr. Our wisecracking drummer would only go so far as to say he was great in Thomas the Tank Engine.
Wise crack huh? How is he with the old fart in a bag routine?
 24. Hahahahahahahahaha!
 25.
Had the pleasure of meeting another BC'er to conclude a trade deal today. Doesn't happen a lot, but when it has happened over the years Ive been a member, it's always been a pleasure. Always good to meet the person behind their BC moniker. There's something about bass players that makes them different from g****ists. I think it's the lack of competitiveness and bitchiness.
You'd enjoy the Bass Bashes then.
If I ever make it to the UK, I'll be looking all of you up...
Like Len, I say go for it. Derbyshire is highly recommended as a place of interest for tourists. I'd be happy to meet up for a coffee/beer and a chin wag if you are in our area.
