Ok, here's my Zoot Deluxe Custom bought earlier this year. Followed by my Warmoth Fretless Then my old faithful Warwick Corvette Ash Standard And finally my Squier Standard Jazz, which is yours for £130 inc. case!

Not really up on USA Fender prices. Does this mean a jazz will be about £800? Can't you get a Shuker for under £700? Bet they'll still sell loads though. . . . .

Got some Warwick ones to tide me over till i can raise more money. £15 for 5 delivered (always buy a couple spare!). It's 2x12 or 2x10 or a combination of the two. Schroeders have a second speaker behind and angled upwards (where that big hole is) I recently changed from a full stack to a Little Mark II and a Schroeder 1212r and couldn't be happier. My band mates are eternally grateful as i can carry my amp and cab in one go!

+1 for the bubinga bodied active basses, remember being very impressed with these when i was younger. Mind you, don't know how they'd compare to cheaper stuff nowadays. Also played an active Stingray copy which was average in every way! Sounded ok but felt a little cheap

Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Nothing tricky but teaches you a lot. Was the first song i ever learned to play!

Warwicks?

Not really interested in trying them (i'm 6'5" so would look a bit silly!) but think it's a cracking idea. Reckon you'd do well to let bass teachers know about this, i found it very difficult finding a suitable bass for my nephew (he's 10 now), he ended up with a short scale guitar

I have no idea how good or bad i may be. I do know, however, that i need more basses and 2 or 3 louder amps

The Blowtorch and the M80 are both big-sounding distortions. Passed my Blowtorch on to get an M80 but haven't found one yet! They are both fuzz-like, but more polite and offer more definition I've also just got the Owen Bass Gremlin (Manchester-made pedal) which is exactly what i was after, a snip too at £60. If you want something extremely hi-gain have a listen to the danelectro black licourice/black paisley pedals. They're a bit noisy but offer massive amounts of low end distortion as well as an octave switch! I got the black licourice off ebay for £12 delivered so it pays to keep an eye out I didn't like boss pedals either, never found one i could use with bass

I sold my 5 for £200 IIRC, although i had sanded it down and stained it (looked better than when i got it!)

I recently converted from Elites (used em for 5 years) to Elixirs, loving it but not really what i'd use for metal. When i did play a lot of metal i used LaBella Hard Rockin Steels and found them to be excellent for that style, i think i ended up using the 50 - 110s as i broke the thinner ones. Jason Newsted used em in metallica and he hammers his basses, plus they're cheap too

I've had 2 VX cabs (this 2x15" and the 1x15" + 2x8" + horn, the vx1508), the 4x10s didn't really jump out at me. For me they sounded less defined than the others in the range. I used the 1508 with the HA3000 head and the 215 with the ha3000 and ha5500 heads, both cabs were very good full range cabs. I did quite a few gigs with both and was always happy with the results, not to mention the power handling of the vx215 at 4ohms Although bass_ferret is right in saying you should get out there and listen to what sounds best, everyone has to go through the process of finding this out for themselves. I've seen players using gear which makes them sound great but has made me sound sh1t! It's down to what suits you. God knows i've been through a few rigs, some i've liked more than others. Another point i'd like to add is that the big Hartke rigs don't sound the same as the combos. I have the A70 (cracking little amp) and could never get the same sound out of the stack and half stacks i've owned, esp the ones involving cabs with the paper cones. The 500w XL stack i had was pretty much there As said previously, there's loads to choose from in the for sale section, everything is at rock bottom prices at the moment so take advantage of our poverty! I wish i'd been a member of this site for a lot longer, would have saved myself a fortune! Ta Steve

+1 to both the above solutions (+2 then?) I use matches, i heard something about the cooks matches being the most suitable because of the wood or something, not sure how true that is though... In my youth i used Milliput, but suppose any decent filler would be a more permanent solution

Ahh, looks different to the chaser. Think the chaser had a MM at the bridge and a J at the neck, also has the low pass switch (although i don't use the one on mine) If you're ever near sunny Blackpool you're welcome to try mine!

The Working Men's Club i used to be a member of wouldn't even let women in the main bar! To be fair there was a seperate family room. It's changed now, women can go up to a certain point in the main bit but no further, not near the snooker tables or the toilets (they have to use the ones on the other side of the building). I remember being told at the induction meeting that any women i brought into the family room were MY responsibilty and any excess noise or disturbance would result in my membership being revoked. Nice eh? It could be to do with insurance though, parents tend to be lenient with buying the kids a few beers around christmas time and accidents do happen which could have repercussions

We do party covers and most of the basslines are pretty awful. We were doing the same thing, learning the structure and chords then setting about it to make it sound half decent! We still do Sweet Home Alabama cos girls love it when they're drunk, but it would be unplayable without some tinkering and improvisation, such a dull song to play! I think the only songs where i play the exact line are Mr Brightside, all Chilis stuff and Fake Tales... by the Arctic Monkeys. A lot of the more modern stuff needs keeping as it's fresh in everyone's minds

The chaser won bass of the year in one of the guitar mags a few years ago, that's what first attracted me to Zoots cos it looked so different. Either way that's a cracking price, but mine was only £110 more and it's flightcased so you may be better off holding out for a secondhand one. Having said that they don't come up that often

Saw a Tesco employee sniggering at me so when i had scanned it i turned to her and said "See, i could do your job...... I just don't want to". Wiped the smirk off her face pretty sharpish!

I have 2 shops in my town both 10 mins walk away from my house. One is run by a very helpful and knowledgeable guy, a pro standard player who knows what players want and always gives good advice. The other is run by salesmen. Guess where i've spent £3000+ over the last few years? The internet does have an adverse effect on small shops though, even the one's that are competitive and decent. For instance, i went into my local shop to get a Squier Jazz but he couldn't get the stock in as it all went to massive online bulk buyers. He had a few different Squier basses and guitars on order and still they haven't been sent. I always try to support my local shop as i consider myself lucky to have it at such convenience, even if it means paying an extra few quid on a set of strings. If it closed i'd soon miss it
