Been looking for a cheap shoulder bag to carry my Superfly around in and came across this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mens-Army-Retro-Comb...=item53dd4c450c Quite a good fit for my Superfly (out of the bulky casing and with added feet), doesn't rattle around and decent clearance from the fragile buttons. Got enough room for a couple of cables and a kettle lead as well as some bits and bobs like a multitool and small tuner. Strap is flimsy but i replaced it with a spare one from a laptop bag. Just a heads up as i know it's hard to find bags that are a good fit and the official LG one is a bit turd.
But I am wondering, for those that really do pro gigs, like pit work or sessions etc, although a broadway production wouldn't suffer if the bassist played a Cheapo, would you be judged by the guys employing you on your gear before you play a note ?
Still i reckon you could turn up to a session with one of those HK Marleaux copies like the one Shockwave had and everyone would think it was a £2-3k bass. Pic from his FS post here: Cheap doesn't always have to mean a Fender knock-off. That thing looks like a boutique bass, well i supose it was shamelessley copied off one! I think if people don't recognise a brand name and the instrument looks upmarket then they'll automatically assume it to be a luthier job.
To be fair to pretty much all basses sound fantastic through good backline anyhow
Fixed it for ya!

I've played weddings and other functions with a £45 Jazz copy, sounds great through my rig and is nice to play. The most i've ever spent on a bass is £750 and i consider that much more than i needed to spend, it was a nice luxury but there are very few bad basses out there. I'd happily gig a Squier/Aria/Westone/Stagg etc. Jazz for the rest of my days, as long as i didn't have to compromise on amplification.

I seem to be losing the bottom end when I slap!!
The MXR M80 looks a handy bit of kit but a little overkill for my needs I think. I used to have a Catalinbread Serrano Picosso which was a nice little boost but I sold it to Higgie when I bought the other pre-amps as I didn't think I needed it anymore - wrong!! Will check out the Silentfly and Boss GEB7 and see if they would be worth buying, will also try the suggestion of trying to play lighter with the fingers but not sure if I can do that! Also got me thinking how Flea manages live as he has a really heavy finger style but I never noticed any drop out when he changed to the thumb?
The Silentfly one i have isn't the Blue Dragon on his site, totally different circuit - although atrangely it's still called Blue Dragon! Really well built though and the same size as the Catalinbread. The MXR Micro Amp is also a good shout at about £60 new, the M80 comes in at around £80 used though and i know which i'd buy! Maybe use a little compression? That's what i use on my practice rig to get a nice balanced slap sound. -
The problem occurs when the seller does send it and it's a POS and you are out of pocket returning it and potentially in the process the seller tries to rip you off by denying the item has been returned... Did that seem a little bitter and personal?
Ah yes there is always that! The thing is that Overwater auction had quite good, if very shrewdly taken, photos which seemed to show most of the bass in detail. I guess if you rule out every bass that doesn't have hi-res pics showing every minute detail then you won't be bidding on many basses, although that's not really a bad thing! In fact the Fortress i bought had a replacement Ovangkol neck if anyone remembers the thread on it. Nothing that bothers me as it's all genuine Warwick parts (and i really liked the Ovangkol one i already had) but i suppose that might bother some people who really like the Wenge ones. I'd feel cheeky complaining considering what i paid though.
May not be totally representative. Would you give £300 to a seller with low feedback and not 100% at that. The question is does the buyer actually ever get the bass or just a load of hassle and eBay/Paypal claiming! If the seller had high feedback at 100% and actually bothered taking some decent photos they would have got much more. Still a good local pickup for cash purchase if you were close enough to the seller.
Totally, in fact i bought my Warwick Fortress from a zero feedback seller without any pictures, got it for £250. If the seller doesn't send the item it's barely any hassle to claim your money back through Paypal, i'm more than willing to sacrifice a few minutes of my life if i can get something i want for much less than i'd usually pay. In the case of that Warwick Corvette i linked to, it was owned by a friend of a BCer (The Greek), so i'd be more than happy to bid if i could justify it! It was mentioned here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...l=corvette+ebay

Can you not rack it? That would keep it perfectly safe, is cheap and cuts down on all the excess weight and bulk of that big wooden box. Also keeps the original exterior safe from road wear.

Aye i thought they looked pretty sturdy in some of his eBay listings. I particularly like the zip-fronted one (Hisys i think) which is pretty much what i'm after but turned on it's side. Bonus is if he has shop then i can take the cab down and get a better idea of the materials. I actually work in a not too dissimilar field so can provide vehicle-quality parts for strap buckles and anchor plates etc.

Ah cool, cheers for the info bud! Yeah i'm kinda after a cover that retains it's shape when it's taken off as it's basically gonna be used as a shoulder bag with a mini neo cab in so needs to be sturdy. The Hartke ones were excellent quality and the Schroeder one i got off Shaun at SHX (£25 in his sale ) is also top notch. The Roqsolid ones in particular look a bit floppy, although it's really hard to tell as their site is awful and doesn't showcase their product at all. Same with the Hotcovers website, i really wanna get a look at what they make but it's just one dodgy generic photo!
Ahh we've got some of them to cover our EV speakers. They're top quality!
Oh btw what was the service like?
Ahh we've got some of them to cover our EV speakers. They're top quality!
Excellent! Looing at the site i see he does shooting gear and it looks like top quality work, not too many close ups of his cab covers though. The only reason i know about it is that his covers crop up every time i do a local search for "Bass" on eBay, handy to have someone like that just a few miles away. I've messaged him about a quote, i see he does zipped covers which is great as i've enquired about a full padded carry bag with a zipped top and shoulder strap. I'm not too keen on the look of the Roqsolid ones, they look a bit plasticy as do the Hotcovers ones. I know they have really good reputations but i prefer the style i have on my Schroeder cab and old Hartke cabs - kinda like padded neoprene. Annoyingly the Silverstone ones look brilliant. If it comes down to it i can just get a slip cover made for nowt at work so nothing to lose really.
Shaun EMails a week ago, guess what - he cant find the payment. I sent him paypal proof then no replies to my daily emails. I have filed a claim with Paypal I wish his covers were rubbish as he doesnt deserve to keep in business with his appalling trading record. All 3 of the orders I have placd with him have been disasterous but the quality of the covers is great. Here we go again.....
Maybe link him to this thread? If you Google "Silverstone Amp Covers" there's 4 complaint threads from different sites on the first page, including this one. I'm not sure how this guy is still in business, no way i'd ever buy anything from him no matter how nice his covers are. Btw there's also this company that makes cabinet covers, never used them but there's an eBay shop and a really bad website. Seems good quality and if he rips you off i can go and shout at him as it's just down the road from me! It's based in Fleetwood, Lancashire. http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/bacsew/?_trksid=p4340.l2559 http://bacsew.co.uk/default.aspx I'm thinking of getting a quote for my EA cab (i want a cover with a velcro top and shoulder strap), if i go ahead with it i'll post my experiences here.

lemmywinks replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Effects
I have to use a boost for slap parts as i play quite heavily fingerstyle. I have a little signal boost box made by Silentfly but most of the time i use the MXR M80 which has a switchable preamp with a 3 band eq. Any decent boost/preamp/eq pedal should get the job done. -

Been casually looking for these parts for a while and can't seem to find them at a reasonable price. I know the surround is available from Allparts and a few USA shops but i'm not too keen on paying £31. I have also seen the control plates knocking about but the cheaper ones seem to be 4 hole and not 3. Any ideas? I thought this would be the sort of thing that would be on eBay for a few quid but obviously not.

Currentlt really want a Promethean but can't justify it as i really don't need it. I have a featherweight practice rig and a compact gig rig, any more would be pure greed! I'm actually GASsing for some space around the house so i'm having a bass gear clearout.

There's loads of fun to be had, especially if you're all mates. I used to prefer gigging to going out to the pub, it's a different party in a different venue every night! Bear in mind that it's quite a big financial outlay and you may need to have very understanding bosses at whatever day jobs you do. If you don't already have it you'll need a full band PA with lights, somewhere to keep it and something to drive it (and you!) about in. But yeah, get the right balance and it's a pretty cool situation to be in, just don't let it strain friendships for whatever reason.
I think that link to the Talkbass test should be auto inserted every time a discussion around wood and it's effect on tone is started to bring the correct level of perspective.
+1 Or simply ask when was the last time a bassist went into a studio and was asked to use an alder/ash/cocobolo bodied bass.....
-
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/scrap-lum...ference-743932/
This /\ Come on now, there's no way you can judge the supposed tonal qualities of a body wood using such flawed means as some of the ones mentioned in previous posts. There's a million other factors that determine tone, pretty much all of which are more influential than the type of body wood - not that the wood type is a consistent factor anyway. People ted to identify trends in their previous (often limited) experiences with basses and make massive general assumptions. Simply playing two individual instruments with different body woods and noticing that they have different sounds does not automatically mean that that it is down to that one factor. Tbh i think in a blind test barely anyone can single out woods that contribute to tone on an electric instrument, as the link above shows. We all have expectations based on preconceptions which colour our judgement - hence people assume that the better sounds come the bass that fits their idea of what a "proper" instrument is. So to the OP, don't worry about it, Basswood works fine!

This Corvette just sold for under £300: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:B:WNA:GB:1123 I was thinking about having a bid on it but i need to cut down on bass stuff, not get more just because it's cheap! The Fortress that didn't sell at £350 was the same finish too, could have had a matching pair for £650. Ah well, i'll just console myself with the fact that i got a Fortress One for £250......

One of my favourite Floyd songs that, basically around G - i only ever played it on acoustic guitar so don't know the b-line. The guitar part plays the ascending line during the verse, i dunno if the bass doubles that.
