  1. Thanks everyone - disaster averted!! Thanks for the advice.! Sub out of corner and away from drum mics - so front edge of stage to the right against wall - and a great gig was had by all. Still need to work on a way to get the drum vocals working without feedback from monitor and bleed/feedback from kick drum/Snare Mics. SM57 on Snare (rim) - wonder whether an overhead might work better ???? But kick drum .... no clue! Current solution is to turn off drummers vocal mic!! Hey Ho - upwards and onwards!
  2. Phew! The available location would have been adjacent to the Drummer, in the rear corner - primarily resulting in grief for the sound-man and bass player (me!). So THANK YOU!!! I shall revert to Plan A. or maybe make a carboard cone and sit the sub adjacent to the front of the stage, beside the wall.
  3. Will just need to persuade he guitarist that it's not too risky/complicated/tempting fate. That's Rock and Roll for you!😅
  4. Hi, Tricky stage on Saturday next, but there is space at the back, to the side of the Drums, for the Sub ......... but it might be a risky experiment as I have used it "out front" previously but this involves convoluted wiring and reduced space for the "performers". So ... convenient, but am I going to run the risk of feedback via Drum mics and Drum Vocals/monitor? The vocal mics should be OK as they are High Pass Filtered at above the sub frequency (or thereabouts). Basically only the Drums go through the Sub (maybe a bit of bass should the need arise.) And yep, I know bass is omnidirectional, so it doesn't theoretically matter but I guarantee the drummer will hear more kick drum via the sub if he's sitting next to it (as will I!). So i guess his mics will too ....... If anyone has practical experience of doing this and would like to share that would be really helpful. Cheers.
  5. Hi Mike, Is popping down to Classic and Cool Guitars in Teignmouth an option? Mark seems to have 3 TT's (and a VT) there at the moment and it might help eliminate the active option (or not) and let you try out the weight? He's really helpful and has some well priced examples. I bought my customised VM4 from him and tried a TT Superlight there more recently (and it was very impressive - luckily he sold it before I could buy another expensive bass I really don;t warrant!!)!!). Good luck,
  6. Yep - simple and inexpensive ("used") mixer eg Soundcraft Signature (or Behringer??) is probably all you need. Some have built in FX's which is really handy, and you might want to think about how many monitor mixes (Aux outs) you need. (sounds daft, but with In Ear Monitors you soon find you need more than you think!). However, if you buy a second hand unit you won't really lose anything if you in future decide you need more Aux outs. We started out a couple of years back in your situation and have evolved since then. My biggest "win" was adding a single Sub. Even in small venues this makes a surprisingly big difference to the sound. And even in small pubs, as the PA speaker Top sits above it it has minimal effect on space requirements - indeed it helps to stop the PA getting knocked over when things get "lively"!! I thought 10 inch tops would be ideal in terms of size in small pubs and transport, but if I started again, I'd go straight to 12inch main speakers, as they cope with bigger gigs too. Good luck!!
  7. Doh ........ still need to check out all the aforementioned basses, but used my Ashdown ABM 600 at Friday's big gig. Sorted! GAS almost evaporated, not only on guitar front, but also amp front ...... might still be looking at some complementary speakers ....... single cab , 2 x 12, light and very loud ............ ☺️
  8. Yep - I did confess to Dave that I had a boxful of broken leads awaiting my feeble soldering skills - he just said .... "pop 'em in - I'll fix them for you" . Almost worth the 300 mile trip😊.
  9. A bit of positive feedback on a miserable Sunday ...... ABM 600Evo IV just back from Dave at Ashdown to check out a "hypothetical" buzz. Disassembled/reassembled/soak tested - nothing wrong, amp in perfect nick. "Check your leads" was Dave's advice! The amps been a back-up for a while but I used it at an important gig on Friday. We weren't that loud (although the venue turned off the sound limiter equipment after the first song!!) and it was barely ticking over. I'd forgotten just how good it is - lots of positive comments and I was able to dial out the slightly mid-forward" tone my bass is prone too for the first time in ages. So - big call out for Ashdown and Dave in particular - FANTASTIC customer support and happy owner.(my other amp will find it's way onto the "for sale" listings shortly!!)
  10. Yep .... I concur ....... the sound is a bit mid forward and, like you, I slightly favour the P Pickup for most "songs". Usually (as evidenced by wear on the P Pup cover) my right hand "rests" just to the neck side of the PPup.
  11. Thanks TRBboy. AlnicoV pickups! Well that's interesting. So, not Delano and not Blacklabel? The Sandberg shop is closed until Jan29th (and I'm not sure they export to the UK these days) .... but if that worked then that would be ideal as I really like everything else about the bass!!! 👍
  12. Yep - I have Blacklabel's in my VM4 ..... but still a bit "mid honk" for me ...... probably need an EQ tweak to my lug holes!!
  13. Thanks for the offer EAD - I'd probably be too shy to subject you to my less than great bass techniques ..... but you never know🙃! Thinking about the Jazz idea, it's just dawned on me that it is something in the midrange that I don't like, so a more scooped sound , a la Jazz bass, might resolve it. I've always stayed away from Jazz basses as I feel that the low punch is a less than the P Bass. I guess I'm looking to retain a punchy sound, with sufficient higher frequency output to allow me to determine the notes being played, but without the mid "honk" that I object too. Is that a Jazz or would a Stingray also suffice? And before someone jumps in with "Why not just EQ it" , I've tried and just can't get there with either a Genzler Magellan or an Ashdown ABM 600 which have lots of tone sculpting options. This might be that I'm just a simple chap looking for a ready made tone that I don't have to fiddle with too much though.
  14. I guess the BBP34 is the successor of the BB 1024 .... any thoughts on the difference between the 2?
  15. Thanks - a few I haven't tried suggested so far ..... just need to find somewhere that stocks them all (or at least a city that does) So far versions I might be able to try/buy, are : Jazz Bass - I always considered these to be more "mid bass forward" so haven't tried on e for years - but everyday's a School Day so ...... Stingray,(might need to be a Sterling Ray34 though ???) A Yamaha PJ .... Schecter G&L L2000 I'd like to try these so are there specific mid price examples to seek out? (Mid price = £1000 or preferably MUCH less!!) I'm reluctant to mod the Sandberg as it's far too nice for me to mess with!!
  16. Thanks Al .... Had a High end SR - as you say fantastically fast neck etc, loved it in terms of playability etc, but needed a bit more of a Rock/Blues machine so traded it for a Fender Professional P. Sounded great but I just didn't love the thing. Tempted by the Yamaha's not really tried any of the higher end ones though - so I'll pop it on my list!! I had the Spector down as a modern-sounding device - I'll see if I can find one to try. So thanks for the input No love for Stingrays? Tried one very briefly recently and the "punch" was impressive!
  17. I have the Sandberg (not Delano) pups in mine. I have tried switching out the P for a Fender 62 Custom Shop, but the difference was only marginally better. In particular the Humbucker at the Bridge position produces a sound I can't get my head round. Maybe I should just try a VS (Passive), but then I should have a look at other options. Or maybe move to a VT/TT?? As you say, in terms of playability/neck feel the Sandberg is the great .........
  18. There's a sound in my head ........... Love my Sandberg VM4, lovely to play, great quality, super flexible ..... but I'd love to try a slightly less "mid forward" sounding bass. EQ doesn't really get me there, so I wondered .... Anyone moved away from Sandberg and if so, to what? How would a MM/Sterling Stingray/Fender Professional II/Performer, be? Other suggestions? I'm in the middle of nowhere so it would be great to get a "hit list" and then do the road trip to compare them. Primary use in Rock Covers band, but with the potential for that Blues/Rock vibe should the need arise........
  19. As a complete amateur at all this, I'm in a similar position, i.e. trying to use IEM's in a (rock) band whilst doing the sound "on the hoof" whilst attempting to get a decent mix for my IEMs. 2 things I'd offer which have improved things for me are; 1) Switching my Mee MX Pro IEM's to Shure SE 215's. MUCH better sound isolation, allowing me to actually reduce the volume rather than compete with the stage noise. 2) Using an old Mic as an Ambient Mic - placed somewhere on stage to capture the "live" sound - this really helps with hearing what's going on and , in some situations might be all that's needed apart from a feed from the bass. I'm still a long way from getting to a satisfactory solution but am persevering!! Good luck!
  20. Still researching!! Had a look at the Zoom B1 4, and waded through the info on most of the devices mentioned. Most demos spend lots of time going through all the different settings, how to create patches/scenes etc. However, no real demonstrations of using the pedals in a practical gigging situation. I suspect I need the maximum number of foot switches so that I can avoid having to scroll through settings/menus whilst playing live. i.e. a "Stomp Version". So it's a limited number of specific effects and a limited number of "scenes". I'm a little concerned about scrolling through menus to get to the correct scene between songs/verse/chorus/intro/outro during a gig. I've asked my son to bring his Pod Go up for Christmas as this has a high number of footswitches. I'll have another go with this and report back. Thanks for all the info - a little project to pursue whilst Strictly Come Dancing (insert own pet hate here .....) distracts the rest of the family over the Christmas break! HoHoHo!
  21. Ta S'manth .... bit of homework there then ..... 😂
  22. Thanks for all the comments! I guess I am rather lazy, but the App/PC interface on the Mod Dwarf looks really intuitively easy to use - and would be great for setting up sounds for particular tracks. S'manth - thanks for the pointer. Thinking about it, I do use different effects in different parts of the same song - usually it's the intro or chords to fill out parts in "quieter" sections, and it would be great to be able to continue to do this without adding a pedal. I guess one could have different scenes for different sections ????? But I wonder about the ease of finding them in the heat of the moment...... Do other units have a similar "pictogram" style user interface on the PC/app??
