1. I'm sure you're both right, you get what you pay for.
2. Sorry, I can't comment on the reverb but won't the enhance setting on the BOSS LMB3 scoop the mids? That won't help. I use flats on fretless but I agree that the 80's was more about the fretless with rounds tone. Using a bit of chorus should do it, and if you want the Guy Pratt/Pino sound then octave too
3. I take a tuner and octave to every gig. A little chorus on a couple of songs but that's about it. I've been through fuzz, distortion etc but in the end the octave is the one that the punters hear from my experience. Unless you get to have a solo I found the drives get list in the mix.
4. Anyone tried the Ammoon DB-1 mini pedalboard? I only use 3 pedals and it looks a low cost and tidy solution. Has anyone road tested one? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ammoon-DB-1-Mini-Aluminum-Alloy-Guitar-Pedal-Board-with-Carrying-Bag-Tapes-X0E5/112998712351?epid=20014554715&hash=item1a4f3f841f:g:FUgAAOSwdrla-35R
5. Anyone tried the TC Electronics Nether octave? Looks to be a Boss OC2 clone from the layout but from the reviews the one octave down knob is more muddy than the OC2 or Growl knob on the MXR BOD.
6. Thanks dudewheresmybass. So should the adaptor I added the link for in the OP work OK with my BOSS psa230 and DOD FX62 or would you recommend another?
7. That's good I notice the DOD says 10v on it. That won't be a problem with a 9v power supply ?
8. I have an 80's DOD FX62 bass chorus which requires the male 3.5 mm power cable. Can I power it from my existing BOSS psa230 if I use this connector ? https://www.amazon.co.uk/ammoon-Positive-Supply-Converter-Guitar/dp/B06XRKG7ZC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526995862&sr=8-1&keywords=9v+power+connector+3.5+mm
9. Yes, much the same as the mid boost on the MXR bass octave deluxe. The mid focused dry really cleans up the overall tone of the octave pedal once the lower octaves are added. It's the sort of sound that when played at low practice volumes seems to lack a bit, but at gig volumes or through FOH really works.
10. Ah ha, perfect. I bought mine used so am not 100% sure if I have factory settings. If you get the chance would you be able to open it and see please? I have mine set to 400hz, and the screw is at 50%, so 12:00.
11. Where do you guys prefer the mid boost set on the BOD? With my P bass the 850 hz setting seems to have more presence but it doesn't seem to sit in the mix as well as the 400 hz setting so I stick to the lower setting. Factory setting does work best for me.
12. I was watching the Pompeii DVD and thought this sounded like flats........... My bad !!
13. I saw Guy on Saturday, on good form. What did he say about flatwound strings? I'm guessing from your comment he doesn't use them?
14. I'm using one with rounds and one with flats and you're right, it does make a difference
15. You've got me wondering now :-) Maybe I'll go back to factory preset and see how it goes
16. I've used the MXR bass octave deluxe for some time now and am very happy with it. I'm still playing with the mid boost setting though to get it exactly where I want it so I'd be interested to know if you have adjusted from the factory preset or not? With a passive P bass I find the factory preset (I think it's 400 hz with the trim pot at 12:00 so about 9 db?) quite harsh and mid heavy but then if you dial the dry back to about 11:30 you get a mid focused dry tone that's pokes through the octave voices. Push the dry much past 12:00 with the factory preset and the dry is too mid heavy for me. This may be because the P bass has a good low mid grunt too. I tried the higher 850 hz frequency and this sounded good at home, but in a band mix gets lost for me. Recently I've been running the mid boost at the 400 hz frequency but backing the trim pot back to 10:00, so about 6db of boost. This means I can push the dry higher with a smaller mid boost which then sounds a little more natural. Be interested to hear other MXR users thoughts on this too.
17. Also, a used Boss LMB3 is a really good value for money compressor/limiter.
18.
Boomy might be an EQ issue, less bass more low mids might help. If you want to try compression may I suggest a Zoom B1on multi effects pedal, cheap as chips, has a few modelled compressors in it and you get all the other effect thrown in, a great way to try what works for you.
I agree. Unless you actually want a compressor then just cutting the bass EQ a bit will help. Start with completely flat EQ and cut bass if it's boomy. Add some mids to cut through a but
19.
Mark bass run flat is a fantastic blank canvas to for specific basses and effects , a P bass to me just sounds perfect through a flat Mark bass rig
Same here too. At higher volumes I sometimes add a little VPF to smooth it out, maybe 9:00, but generally flat.
20. On my P bass I use finger or a pick for the sound they give so I want the difference. I don't find the volume really changes for me, just the tone and attack. For a driving rock song or if I want the bass to just out of the mix the pick does the trick. But if you do need to adjust the volume then an eq, compressor or clean boost such as the MXR micro amp would work. If you use a compressor be careful not to over compress, unless that's the sound you want.
21.
IN my personal experiance I have tried half rounds and ground wound's on a fretless (and fretted) and found both to be not as good as full on flats or rounds, halfway sound and not that good at either for me. Personal taste might suit some.
Yep, same here. I just found the half wounds to be neither one thing or the other. They didn't have the bite of rounds or the warmth of flats. I've had Chromes on now for a few years, the same set, and they sound better than ever. I did try the new Ernie Ball cobalt flats and they were certainly brighter sounding than the Chromes, but I still went back to the Chromes in the end. I want to try some new Fender flats but can't bring myself to take the Chromes off at the mo.
22.
Out of interest, for those suggesting octavers on fretless, do you mean specifically octave down or octave up?
Octave down here too. It fattens up the sound when playing higher up the neck. I find the octave up is more a specific sound if the situation is right but octave down can beef up a chorus or bridge etc as well as be an effect in it's own right.
23.
Quite boringly I use the "enhance" recommended settings in the manual! Does the job so I don't mess with it from there. And I still don't use this pedal for my fretted basses. Since my earlier post I have added a Hartke bass chorus pedal which is great for the fretless and am now using an ashdown amp head and it's octave setting works nicely too, would be better still if I get the octave effect footswitched. Incidentally I also spent about a month without gigs rehearsing with only my fretless and a very old zoom 506 multi effect. In the mix leaving this on the factory A1 effect, which is some kind of quite subtle flanger, it worked with everything! I have an 80s boss flanger on my main board so will experiment with this and the fretless on Thursday night...
Thanks. So you're not using any compression, just adding a bit of the enhance for top end. I can see the sense in that if you don't want to compress at all
24. Just a little compression. Apart from that occasional octave and chorus if the song needs it but don't to go too 80's
octave box on fretless was fun in the 80's, for sure... never use compression, you'll lose the expressiveness that makes playing fretless so rewarding. I don't use any effects on my fretted or fretless, save for a little reverb on a recorded solo. You've all you need with 8 fingers and 2 thumbs (hopefully :-))
I disagree, light compression will help with sustain and help the notes ring out. Check these out: https://www.youtube....h?v=NTTzcb4z-ZY and https://www.youtube....h?v=5NczyGuRnl8
Boss bass limiter/ enhancer to bring out the "mwaaaaahhhh" - great for my fretless, still got to find a setting on it I like for my fretted basses. Tried a Boss bass chorus and just personally didn't like it so sold it on. Boss digital delay works nicely with it too. I use my fretless for heavier music too so distortion and fuzz (EHX Bass Blogger being the current weapon of choice) does very nicely
Out of interest, if you still have the Boss limiter enhancer what settings do you use for fretless? I use this pedal foe exactly the same purpose.
