2.
Have I seen this on eBay, Clive ?
Yes. Unfortunately the sale didn't go through as I think the buyer was a dealer and wanted a spotless bass. It is used with wear and tear expected for it's age but plays well.

The serial number starts with E4 which I believe dates back to the late 1980's or early 1990's. There are a few dings and scratches as you can see in the photos but it's just wear and tear you'd expect on a bass of this age. The neck is straight, the truss rod adjusts fine, pickups and controls all working fine. [s]Price £150[/s] Now down to £140 Postage is £15, or you can collect from South Norfolk New photos added, on page 2
  4.
Try both - but try them WITH a band mix. Both let it cut through the mix differently, the most effective one will depend on how guitars or keys are EQ'd. I prefered the 400 when playing at home/solo, but found the 850 better in a band mix.
After trying both in the mix 850 did seem to cut though best for me too. It just emphasized the tone of my passive basses better. With my set-up 400 hz sounded too harsh and different from the bypassed tone.

  6. On your MXR bass octave deluxe do you prefer the mid boost at 400 hz or 850 hz? I can hear merits in both and am still deciding what's best on my P bass so would be interested in what you guys prefer. Thanks
  7.
Funny you say that, because the one in my 105q broke. It's not sturdy at all. Luckily, I emailed Dunlop and they sent me 2. The one in my MXR M80 never broke though (because I didn't use it). I had it for 2 or 3 years. Loved the Color button but it never really worked live. Good at home and in rehearsal studios though, when you get there and have a different crappy amp every time, just leave the random amp flat and use the tone from the Color button + a tweak with the EQ, you'll get a sound you can trust every time. Live though, too scooped, makes you disappear in the front of house mix, then you turn up and it gets too bassy and the sound guy goes nuts. I always ended up leaving it off. Also, though it's brilliant with a pick, it's a bit useless with fingers because all your definition is gone. Distortion is very weak IMO, only bearable with Gain and Blend below noon for a mild overdrive, which kind of disappears when the rest of the band comes in. If you go for higher settings, low end is gone and so are you in the mix. I kind of miss the tone of recording playing with a pick with the Color button, but that's about it, didn't really have any other use or it...
Totally agree about the colour button. Sounds great at hoe but in the band mix it's too boomy and muddy so I just don't use it. The rest of the pedal is great though. EQ tweaks work great when needed and I don't use distortion much but when I do the M80 can do what I need well enough to not bother carrying another distortion.
  8.
The MXR Octaver Deluxe can also cover this sound very well.
Would that be the 'Playhouse' setting in the MXR manual? I'd love someone to post a demo of this setting along side an actual OC2 just to see how close it is. I have the MXR and sometimes want that OC2 sound too.
  9. Hi Joel, welcome aboard. Are all the back issues available? I'm trying to find issue 57 but can't find it on your website.
  10.
I have all the back issues in a box and a scanner, but I have not yet finished unpacking from a (no longer all that) recent move. If nobody else can sort you out, drop me a line in a few weeks and I should have at least the scanner up and running!
Thanks JimBobTTD, that's really kind of you.
  11. I saw PIL in London recently and Scot Firth's tone was amazing. Fender Jazz and EUB. I then came across the Bass Guitar Mag, Issue 57 details, which had an interview with Scott. I didn't know about that at the time and now I can't get hold of a back issue. Does anyone know where I can see a copy of the interview on-line? I can't find any interviews or gear lists for Scott anywhere.

    Octave settings

I have a MXR octave deluxe and like the sound of all 3 knobs at noon with the mids engaged at 850 hz when I play solo. But, most of the time I'm stepping on it during a guitar solo or when I play high up the neck. How do you like to set the dry and octave levels in a band mix like this ?
  13.
[sup]I've noticed the same thing with mine, I'm sure it will drian the battery a bit more but I can't say by how much. I was using batteries in my effects as well since I only have 3 pedals at the moment but I'm sick of changing batteries and have just ordered a daisy chained power supply off ebay (the last straw came when I forgot to unplug the jack leads from my MXR288 the other night only to find the battery completely dead the next day).[/sup] [sup]The power supply definately makes sense economically when you look at the price (mine was ~£11) compared with battery changes. Plus there's nothing more annoying than being stuck without a tuner or effect because the battery has run out.[/sup]
Out of interest which PSU did you get? I tried a cheap one once from ebay once and it the pedal hummed when I plugged it in.
  14. When using my MXR BOD I like to engage the MID boost button. This means that when the pedal is in-line but I'm not using the octave effect the MID indicator LED is always on regardless when the input jack is plugged in. How much of a drain will that be on the battery? I don't use many effects so find it easier to use batteries.

    MXR M80 DI PEDAL

I don't know if it's just me but I like the distortion. Yes it would be nice to have the option to de-select the 'color' button in the distortion but on the plus side it does add bottom end to the distortion which is often lacking in this type of pedal. Keep the blend somewhere around 50% and gain on minimum for a nice grind, or both blend and gain of 50% for a good distorted tone. I don't like the 'color' button on the clean channel, too scooped unless I make a rare move into slap in which case it works great.
  16. Since the OP I've amended my settings a little. I like to hear a little more original tone cut through so run the dry at 2:00, growl at 12:00 and girth at 10:30. I find this cuts through nicely.
  17. What's your favourite settings on the M288? Right now I like the dry at 1:30 with the growl and girth at 12:00. I use the mid occasionally to cut through.
  18. Thanks for the suggestions so far. Still can't find many commercial recordings but found this on Youtube which sounds nice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPh78mhJ560
  19.
Anyone tried the half wounds? I've been tempted to give them a try for a while now.
Yes. To me they just felt like light flatwounds, but not as good as flats. IMO they are not a half way house between flats and rounds but more like 90% flats in sound and feel. In the end I prefer a good set of flats which I think the Hotwire flats are. They were smooth though after only a few days, not rough like some people say halfs are.
  20. I've had a set of Hotwire flats on my fretless jazz for almost 2 years now. They just get better with age. The tone and punch is just the best I've had from flats, and I've tried many.
  21.
Why dont you just try a set? It's the only way you'll know. I used rounds for years - even on my fretless basses - but I got a fretless Jazz that had a LIGHT (.40-.100) set of flats on it and I really liked them, esp played with both pups on full but plucking over the front of the front pup. Try'em!
I've had a set on my fretless jazz for a number of years now and I enjoy them too. I just not aware of many recordings out there with them and wondered if many existed.
