WITH THIS ONE
Very nice, but I don't think you'd trade for a stock MIM fretless Jazz. I wouldn't !!
 2.
Problem is you simply don't know what he's actually playing and what he's playing through. Of course a Jazz can sound something like a Precision - for example an Audere with the preset vintage tone engaged - you've just got to paly around with playing style, strings, electrics, electronics, and amplification. Of just get a Precision
Very true. It's from a DVD so there will have been post production taking place. I imagine the original must be in the right ballpark though.
 3. This is the closest I've found to a Precision fretless tone from a Jazz type fretless. Great tone and exactly what I'm after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1KJKRG4ZoY
 4. I'm really enjoying the tone here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYOb7HqGiaQ Based on what's been said above I'm guessing he's using flats with both pickups and tone on full, and maybe mids boosted a bit too ?
 5.
Do we know what the MIM jazz has in the way of fingerboard? Just thinking that WoT's ebony may account for some of the difference in brightness.
It has a rosewood board. wateroftyne, thanks for your eq suggestions, I'll give them a try and see how I get on.
 6.
Hi Clive Hmmm... it may be the amp, the pickups, the setup, the strings or the brand of speaker, rather than size of the drivers. To give you an example - towards the end of this clip, you can hear my fretless P (albeit with a new-ish set of flats) through a Barefaced Vintage, which is a 2x15" with no tweeters. IMO It's pretty defined, and that's without the added clarity of the J pickup. And, don't forget, playing at room volume is going to give more clarity than at full pelt during a gig.
Yes it is well defined. how is your eq set there ?
 7.
Here's a little vid I made a couple of weeks ago, where I switch between the three pup combinations on a Tony Franklin fretless. It should give you an idea of the tonal differences...
Hi wateroftyne. I’ve been trying to work out why your fretless with old flats sounds so much brighter and more zingy than my MIM fretless Jazz, and apart from the obvious higher quality of you TF it may be down to my amp. I have a 1 x 15 combo which just doesn’t do the fretless justice. I notice on your clip you're using 10's or are they 8's? I’ve discovered that through headphones with no eq it sounds so much better, and closer to what you’re getting on your clip. Now I know my bass can do what I want I’ll need to experiment a bit more with the eq, maybe drop the bass a bit and boost mids.
 8.
I'm looking for a good, full sounding fretless tone on my fretless jazz, something like this by Guy Pratt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2gSwNyyevk It's not a DVD quality clip so hopefully you can hear properly what's going on rather than post production. Skip to 2:57 to hear the short bass solo. It's a passive Lakland fretless, is he using both pickups together, or just the neck pickup?
Back to the fretless tone Guy Pratt gets, I found this interview where he talks about his fretless jazz. He says he defers to the neck pickup to emulate the fretless P tone used in Floyd recordings. 9.
yup, Neck Pick up only on the Fretless jazz when through my Valve amp different in band setting obviously but for home practice it is lovely getting that warmth.
What do you do differently in a band setting? Do you find the neck pickup doesn't cut through there ?
 10.
Hard to tell from that clip, but based on the previous one I'd say he's got both full-on.
He must be bumping up the mids to get over the natural mid scoop caused by running both pups on full ?
 11.
+1 for the MXR M80. I like mine!
and me Dunlop have put a demo on Youtube now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGT9IVvR8sM
 12.
Lots of bridge pup in there, I think..
Do you think he has both pups on full? Not easy to tell as he's playing with a pick. Here's another video of a different song ferom the same tour, not such good quality I'm afraid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jUqBX1wYfw
 13.
Lots of bridge pup in there, I think..
Thanks wateroftyne, it's not a thin sound so he must be adding some lows to beef it up I guess.
 14. Here's another clip of a fretless Jazz bass. This time it's Eddie Duffy playing with Simple Minds. Does this sound like just the neck pickup rather than both? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIdtU-E2kLk
 15. Thanks for all the comments. I used the fretless jazz at a gig over the weekend, with both pickups on full, and with 1 to 2 db boost to the bass and 4 to 5 db boost to the mids it sounded great.
 16. It's great to hear it's not just me who prefers the neck pickup, or a combination of the two I’ve been struggling for a while to get a good tone from the bridge pickup because you read that’s all you should use on fretless.
 17. Thanks wateroftyne, nice clip, and very helpful to hear that along side the clip above. I appreciate your dilemma about the 71 too, they both sound great. Interesting what’s been said about the J pickup too. You seem to get shunned by the fretless community for not using it.
 18. Thanks guys, discernment comes with experience and I appreciate your input. Both pups on full on Jazz bass does create a natural mid scoop so I guess a boost to the mids on the amp would be needed too.
 20. Thanks for the replies guys. I know I won't get an exact P tone from the jazz but working more with the Neck pickup seems to be the way to go. And, I have the bridge pickup if I want to change things a bit too.
 21. I’ve got a fretless Jazz bass but I’m not really after the Jaco tone, as much as I admire his talent. I want more the P bass fretless tone, ie, Pink Floyd - Hey You, Sting, David J of Bauhaus. I can’t afford the TF fretless or an older fretless P bass so can I get a P bass fretless sound out of my fretless Jazz using pickup balance, tone, eq settings etc?
 22. Love the sound of the 71. Are they really old flats ? How si the eq set on your amp? The TF gives more options I agree but vintage + rosewood is a winner.
 23.
No-ones mentioned them yet, but Status Hotwires! Wooo! They come in round (hex core - standard for most strings), round (round core), half wound (which are rounds with hex cores, but shaved off, they feel like flats, sound and play like rounds, sodding excellent), and their flatwounds. I've got a set of half wound 45-105 on my VMJ, me likey.
I'm thinking of trying the half wound strings on my fretless. How smooth are they, will they mark my rosewood fretless board? What's the tension like? I read that Guy Pratt uses them too on his fretless.
I think the info came from a chap on TalkBass who had access to the necessary test gear, though I can not say that I am 100% sure.
True, I saw that too, but the fact that these numbers are the same as the Seymour Duncan Paranormal make me suspicious.
You guys may find this helpful. *Apparently* these are the frequency centres for the M80 EQ and colour sections. Bass +/- 18db 60 hz shelving Mid +/- 10db 850hz Treble +/- 12db 4Khz shelving Colour +6db @ 80hz -6db @ 650hz
Not sure that’s right for the color switch eq changes. Has anyone actually put the M80 on a meter to see exactly how the color button changes the eq settings?
