1. Actually, scratch that, I'll bring my 5 string fretless Rick Turner Renaissance... that's up for sale Sx
I'm really looking forward to see you all on the day! I'll have a ton of toys with me, and none of it will be for sale
3.
Thanks again Steve, I'll refer back to your points as we get into it. Your right, it's fun already, and I'm incredibly excited at the idea of developing it further. Although we're talking about pretty low levels of ability here, the sounds we make are already interesting to me. I'll check out your stuff, been meaning to subscribe for ages. All the stuff I have of yours are downloads from Amazon, which I suspect benefits neither you or I!
I did get paid when my stuff was on Amazon (I've removed it, I'm not into supporting tax evasion ) but they took a hefty chunk... The Bandcamp stuff works out at MUCH less per album for you to pay (initially it's 30 albums PLUS everything in the next 12 months, for £20. Thereafter it's everything in that year for the £20... which last year was 7 albums ) - and it's way more sustainable for me not having to 'market' individual albums, but being able to focus on a body of work that reflects just how much amazing stuff can happen when you spent your life improvising Thanks for the support - I REALLY appreciate it. And I'm looking forward to hearing what you and your drummer get up to!
4.
To be honest I can't remember. Probably just as well in case I plagiarised your work
ha! plagarise away - it's always interesting to hear ideas being recirculated. I got them from somewhere in the first place. Seems only right to pass them on
5.
For the simplicity I want I'm looking at th Jam man stereo atm... just trying to get security clearance from my Wife. If it works out though I'd like to get a little more complex. Small steps and all that, but the more ideas drummer and I come up with the more I hear different parts but don't want to go beyond a 3 piece.
that sounds like a lot of fun - I'd definitely recommend making sure the drummer can hear what you're looping, perhaps more importantly than either of you hearing a click - so long as (s)he's got a good headphone mix of the loop stuff, you should be OK. Especially if you have time to practice... I never practice with anyone, only do gigs, so there's a whole other level of knife edge there, but as it's all improvised, the set up can 'fail gracefully' - if the drummer can't hear rhythmic loops well enough, I just don't use them. The last option, which you may find enjoyable, is to mic up the drums and loop both of you - I've been doing this a lot recently with Andy Edwards - we have a duo live album that's currently subscriber-only over at Bandcamp ( http://stevelawson.bandcamp.com/subscribe ) but has quite a few points in it where I loop both of us together, and even a bit in one piece (the last one, I think) where I'm looping and manipulating his drums as a duet with his live drums Some of it is on video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qL3BnCjIr-I - see if you can work out which bits are looped drums
6.
Thanks so much Steve. One of your pieces was the inspiration for the arrangement and dug me out of a hole of stuckness.
which one? Glad to be of service!
7.
Whereabouts are you based by the way?
I'm in Birmingham - I gig here a lot, and as Shelly has noted elsewhere, there are often a fair few Basschatters that show up to my gigs. Next one is on July 23rd at Tower Of Song in Birmingham, with drummer Andy Edwards (ex-Robert Plant/Frost*/IQ etc.) and guitar genus Phi Yaan-Zek. hope your bass bash goes well!
8.
This sounds a lot like the Looperlative gear that Steve Lawson used to use... http://looperlativeaudio.com/ Don't know what the status of the company is these days...
That's all doable on the Looperlative, though the click would be an audio channel that you record, and then just sync everything else to it as multiples of that... I've done it a few times, though these days I tend to just send a whole submix of the loop-stuff to the drummer if they want it, so that they can hear it all and adapt to whatever weird rhythmic strangeness is going on As for the status of the Looperlative, it's currently out of production, but is going back into production very soon, I gather - check the facebook page
9. Enjoying this a lot! Nice work. That's a lovely collection of pedals, and you've got them working together well!
10.
I know he's a busy man but I'd love to see a set/talk by Steve Lawson!!
hi all! thanks so much for thinking of me, I really appreciate it. I've had a couple of messages over on FB about this. Bottom line is, I'd love to do it, but as a non-car owner, I'd have to rent one for the weekend and drive all my stuff down to Surrey. So it'd cost me £80-100 to be there, and I'd not be able to teach at all that day. So as much as I'd love to, if there's no expenses available, I just can't afford to. Steve
11.
Similar for me - the beauty of playing in a revved up R&B band is that there's no pressure to sound like Steve Lawson...although that would be pretty interesting.... I could knock out a satisfactory performance with any four string bass that holds it's tuning, a lead and something that makes the noise louder and which I and the audience can hear. I'm a low-maintenance dude.
...FWIW, I love those gigs where I can show up with a bass, a volume pedal, an amp and a couple of cables. I often take an overdrive pedal just to thicken the sound behind solos if it's a three piece... That was my rig when I was depping for Dave Clarke in Alvin Stardust's band a few years ago, and when I do wedding band deps - not a looper or a reverb in sight I do like getting back to the crazy toys afterwards though
12. FWIW, it's took me quite a few months to get anywhere near comfortable with a 6... I took my first 6 (my fretless Modulus) out on tour with Howard Jones just a few weeks after I got it - that was a trial by fire!! But it took some time to really get used to, especially for certain techniques (slap on a 6 is still tricky, though hugely rewarding when you get it right ) - might be worth holding onto for a few months to see how you get on... it's not going to lose any more value in that time... If you make it up to Birmingham, I'll happily give you a free lesson for having the balls to buy it without trying it first anyway (if I had the money I'd be buying it in a heartbeat - I'd love to have two of these ) Steve
13. Looks beautiful! Looking forward to hearing it
14. That was a whole lot of fun! Juan's amazing, and definitely got me GASing for a few of those pedals. that reverb w/ the delay!! amazing overdrives too. That pic of me and him is amazing, Cybertect - thanks for taking it!! Good times! Sx
15. thanks for the interest, all! I'm really looking forward to this. Jonas has been one of my favourite solo bassist for over 20 years. A few more details on the FB event page for the tour - https://www.facebook.com/events/1139611506066543/ hope the london ticket link will be available v. soon. We're hoping to do more dates next year, if these go well, so please do come and bring friends Steve www.stevelawson.net
16.
Oh and this happened. Photo by Paul Sips (the guy with the hat). I'm on the far left.
Someone was asking about the guy in the hat - that's Paul Sips, owner of Paul's Bass Matters in Nijmegen, The Netherlands - one of my favourite people in the world. He's incredibly knowledgable about pretty everything bass related, a wonderful player and a big part of the fun at bass shows like this, which as well as all the stuff going on on stages and stands, are an amazing opportunity to catch up with friends I rarely get to see (on the other side of Scott is another incredible bassist and human, Claudio Zanghieri - bassist, composer, teacher, BFF ) I had a fantastic weekend - was absolutely blown away by both of Divinity's sets (her masterclass was about the best 45 minutes of anything I've seen/heard at a bass show in many years), Doug Wimbish was the best I've ever seen him (massive props to Dave Marks and Darby Todd who did an amazing job as his band!) and Yolanda Charles' band, with Federico Malaman and the amazing Rob Harris on guitar was outstanding. Sunday's line-up of Divinity into Yolanda into Doug Wimbish was pretty much my perfect bass day line-up All in, a killer weekend (sorry to be so late to the party) Steve
17. Like Simon, I rather liked the 5 string single cut - amazingly consistent tone and feel. Will be interesting to see how the brand/design/ideas develop over the next year or so as they make more instruments! Steve
18. just catching up on this - what a fantastic weekend. Such a pleasure to be there, and a joy to play/talk for you all. Hope to see you all again soon Steve
19. I love this record! Really beautiful music. Definitely recommended
20. I tried it out, both at NAMM and at the Jim Dunlop HQ the week after (there's video of me playing through it floating around on FB) I LOVED it - I'm a fan of the Bass Overdrive too, but this thing has a much wider range of possible sounds, with the two completely different types of overdrive. Yer man at Fuzzrocious has done an incredible job. I definitely want one - will see if I can include it in my pedal masterclass at LBGS Steve
21. really looking forward to being there!
22. Bandcamp have clarified what they're doing with it - basically given us all the info we need to give the VAT man if we go that route, but also transitioning as quickly as possible to being able to pay the VAT so we don't have to... here's my take on it - http://www.stevelawson.net/2014/12/bandcamp-and-the-new-eu-vat-law/ Steve
23. here's a few: http://clatter.bandcamp.com/ (prog duo, amazing) http://julieslick.bandcamp.com/album/streaks (bass/drums/brilliance) http://evanmarien.bandcamp.com/album/collection (bass and drums with some triggered sounds too)
24. Hi all, my new album came out today - it's a duo live set from me and Jon Thorne, recorded during my gig at the London Bass Guitar Show in March... I think some of you were there... http://music.stevelawson.net/album/diversion is the album and http://www.stevelawson.net/2014/06/diversion-new-album-out-today/ is a blog post about it. Hope you enjoy it steve www.stevelawson.net
