Haha, the Geddy thing crops up on online forums every few months. I was pretty freaked out when I watched the 'Rush In Rio' DVD, thinking 'I don't remember playing to that many people!!' - however, he's considerably shorter and older than me. Steve www.stevelawson.net
When did you last see Matt Garrison (he plays a 5 string I know, but it has the range of a 6 string), or John Patitucci, or Steve Lawson, or Michael Manring, or Yves Carbonne playing the sort of songs that a pub band plays, they don't, they use the ERB for what it was intended for, that is playing BEYOND the role of a normal bass.
As the only one of the named players who actually posts here, I will say that I do use my 6 string on 'pub band' gigs, or at least wedding gigs (I avoided pubs for years cos of smoke, and haven't been asked to play one since the ban )... However, the reason for this is that, at least for my hands, 6 string seems to be as big as you can go whilst the ergonomics of the instrument still work for prolonged 'normal' bass playing. They may well exist, but I've not yet played a 7,8,9+ stringed instrument on which I could comfortably play 'normal' bass lines for any length of time. my 6 string Moduluses are more than comfortable to be used in either a 'normal' bass capacity or a a more 'Bass 2.0' setting. For wedding gigs, I often only take on 6 string bass, either fretted or fretless, and play a mixture of jazz, soul, funk, 70s stuff on it, and VERY rarely solo... I could take a 4, but the 6s have a different tone and don't inhibit any kind of other playing. From my experience, 7+ strings tend to be approached as two instruments in one, with a very definite divide between what happens at the bottom and top of the neck. No problem with that at all, but it is a difference of approach. Of course there are always people who buck the trend - Roy Vogt is a fantastic bassist who played 7 string with Englebert Humperdink!! cheers Steve www.stevelawson.net
I'm shocked the name Marcus Miller has not been mentioned Marcus Miller is one of the greatest solo bassists out there. That man can groove like no other.
Other than the little tapping thing on 'Tales', I've not heard Marcus do anything else solo, can you point me to some? I'd love to hear more. cheers Steve www.stevelawson.net
It'd be cool if Michael Manring and Steve Lawson could make it as well.
Sorry guys, not this year - apparently they aren't booking any 'solo' players, but are focusing on bands... got a few gigs coming up though, if you're interested - see http://www.stevelawson.net/gigdiary.shtml cheers Steve www.stevelawson.net

Obviously I love mine - I own two of them, and given the spare cash I'd get a third as a spare, given that they aren't made any more. Getting a handle on the architecture and routing is the key - once, as CK says, you understand some of what's possible, you can start to apply your imagination to the task at hand. I've created quite a few mad sounds that have become 'signature' sounds of mine, from tremolo patches that can sound like a Fender Rhodes to mad ebow sounds with regenerating delays with different things coming out of each side of the stereo field. FWIW, I don't use a full foot controller with it - I've got a little crappy 2-button Lexicon footswitch and an expression pedal that plug into the foot switch and foot pedal sockets on the back, and I do all my patch changing by hand. When I first got the G2, I had the floor unit with it, but it was just way too big and heavy for me to make use of. At some point, I may programme some stuff into my Rolls MIDI Wizard, that I use to control the looperlative, but could have transmitting on more than one channel at a time, but for now, the way I've got it works great. I think it's the best multi-FX unit I've ever tried - the only thing on the market at the moment that I could imagine coming close is the Eventide Eclipse (the other Eventides fail for being 2U rackmounts, which is just too big for me to fly with...) - I'd quite like to have an Eclipse to run in conjuction with it... If you want to hear some of what it will do ANY recording you'll ever hear of me, except the album 'Conversations' was recorded with the G2 - so head over to http://www.last.fm/music/steve+lawson or do a search on youtube or itunes, or go to the mp3s page at my website, and it's going to be chock-full of G2 noises. Hi guys, I've got a few London shows coming up fairly soon - August 22nd I'm playing in two different line-ups at Darbucka World Music Bar in Clerkenwell - first in my duo with Lobelia - you can hear tracks from that on My Myspace page and our version of Black Hole Sun on her MySpace page. And then second set I'm playing with Monk AKA Ric Hordinski - singer/songwriter, guitar soundscapist/looper and fantastic producer. The line up will be Ric guitar/vox, me - bass and his drummer Josh, both of them over from the US (we're doing the Greenbelt festival together over the bank holiday weekend). Tickets will be £6 on the door, great food available at the venue during the show or upstairs in the Lebanese restaurant before hand. Doors 7.30, music starts 8. London gig #2 - August 28th I'm playing solo at The Spitz as part of The Arctic Circle night, alongside Max Richter and Hauschka. Tix are £6.00 London gig #3 - Sept 6th sees the return of the Recycle Collective, this time at The Vortex in Dalston. The first one features me with two vocalists - Cleveland Watkiss and Andrea Hazell. Cleveland is one of the most versatile singers I've ever come across and can cover everything from beat box to soul, opera to reggae toastin'. Andrea is a mezzo-soprano with the Royal Opera, and another fantastic improvisor. The two of them together, with me making lovely bass noises, is a wonder to behold! Ticket price TBA, but all details will be on The Vortex Website. And I'm also playing in Milton Keynes on Sept 9th - see my site for details as I get more of them! Hope to see you at one or more of the shows! Steve Lawson - lessons in and around BIRMINGHAM (changed)
Steve Lawson replied to Steve Lawson's topic in Tutors Available
Hi all - status update! I'm moving to Herne Hill, South London this week, very close to Herne Hill train station (if you're coming from the north, I think there's a fast train from Victoria, or a slower bus from Euston), v. easy to get to, and I start teaching there next week... Please drop me a PM or an email if you want to book a lesson in - it'll be £25 a hour, or £45 for two hours, or I'm still happy to come to you for £60 for two hours... cheers, Steve -
I think the distinct lack of monitors was clearly a huge issue - we had the speakers pointing at us, and his bass was still FAR louder than the tracks - for him stood in front of his amp, playing an unfamiliar bass (in terms of set up and idiosyncrasies) with no monitoring, playing to tracks he hasn't played for months, by his own admission, I think he would have to be super-human to have got through them without a fluff or two... So was there some sloppiness in his playing? yup. Was it understandable in the setting yes? Was he making the best of a tricky situation (given that his whole thing is about being on stage with a band...)? yup. I really enjoyed it. Steve www.stevelawson.net

it was a great evening - Tony's such a fantastic story-teller (if you haven't bought his book yet - Beyond The Bass Clef - go and order it from his website, www.tonylevin.com ) - and has such a wealth of experience that when coupled with that level of honesty and self-effacement (the bit about not being able to keep up with the LTE guys was priceless), makes for a great evening. I hope he does more of these... steve www.stevelawson.net

Anybody going to this? anyone know if there's a charge? I could just call them, but y'know, the interwebs is always better than the phone. steve www.stevelawson.net

Steve Lawson - lessons in and around BIRMINGHAM (changed)

Peaty - probably, I'll certainly post any changes in status here... If not at home, I'll be looking at renting a rehearsal studio one day a week just for teaching... G77 - gimme a shout, we'll get something sorted! Steve www.stevelawson.net -
Hey all, I'm back from 7 weeks in the States, and am teaching again, should anyone be interested. Am still in the middle of moving house, so am teaching in student's homes in and around London - £60 for a two hour lesson, including travel (that's the money includes the travel, not the time!), unless you're within 15 minutes of Watford/Rickmansworth, in which case I'll do one hour lessons for £30. For more info on teaching/music/me see www.stevelawson.net cheers! Steve Lawson www.stevelawson.net

I'm not doing the fest this year, guys - really sorry. However, I may well be playing in Glasgow in August, and will try to hook up a show in Edinburgh at the same time, if I can... cheers! Steve www.stevelawson.net
From what I've read so far, it looks pretty good. Shame the proof reader missed Steve Lawson's column heading still referring to tapping chord extensions when this month's lesson is about syncopation.
...to be fair, that's almost certainly because I sent it in far too late for them to edit it properly... Adrian does a great job of sorting out whatever I'm waffling on about each month, but when he gets it from me 10 minutes before it's meant to go to press, there are bound to be mistakes... must try harder to get my stuff in on time! PS Vic says hi, and thanks for the double thumbing ideas - he's getting quite good at it now... Sx
