1.
A much anticipated update from Jon. It seems like forever between updates but when they come through - yowsa!!! Anyway here we have the swamp ash body with it's poly base coat done. Looking good if I don't mind saying so!
Beautiful graining. It seems a shame to cover it with paint to be honest but either way his work is certainly very impressive.
2. If only Sounds Great in Heald Green stocked basses (I know it's a lot better than it was but does need more) it would be bass heaven. Excellent staff/attitude/stock... just needs a few more basses. Oh and they have the best selection of MarkBass stuff I've seen in any shop. If you live in the north west a visit is essential.
3.
Cool trip! TrueTone in Santa Monica is a fab shop. I bought my Walnut Elite II from there after being a) treat like crap on a shoe or being totally underwhelmed by other shops in the area. Sunset Strip is worth a look around, but you won't find many bargains. Voltage was a great shop, but it looks like it's gone now. Norm's Vintage and Rare in Venture *could* be a great shop, but Norm & the staff were - at the time - a bunch of rude imbeciles. So there. Do yourself a favour - if your itineary allows, when you do the Vegas / Grand Canyon trip, get off the tourist trail and head into the reservations. Places like Tuba City and that. Incredible. And, it goes without saying (for a Fenderholic like me, anyway)... Chicago Music Exchange! Here's some photos from my trips out there, if you're interested. 2001 Band Tour (Southwest etc. toward the bottom) Honeymoon (similar to your trip, but in reverse)
Some great photos there. I've visited Phoenix a number of times to see friends and it seems we've been to all the same places including the church in the desert and Sedona, Flaggstaff etc. I was last there in January and believe it or not it was warmer in the UK than Arizona... although I have been in Phoenix in the summer when it 132 degrees. This was the same trip that the 'current cool spell we are having in Phoenix...' as reported on TV was only 98 degrees!!!
4. I noticed the crosshead screws on the thumbrest appear to be different sizes. Is this normal? I was going to email the seller but I'm scared.
5. Welcome on board. This is the friendliest forum on the web. Well... it's the only one that really interests me anyway.
6. A Mini, a mac and an appreciation of biscuity goodness. We have much in common. Welcome on board.
7. Please leave it well alone... For somebody, somewhere that will be their dream bass. Mr Shuker, like God got it right the first time round so there is nothing to be gained be tampering with the natural order of things. Do you really need to get rid of it? If it's a bolt-on couldn't Mr S simply build you a replacement neck? Just a thought.
8. +1 on the Julian Cope autobiography.
9. I would imagine it would be to stop the less than honest ebayer from 'cloning' an instrument using inferior parts but a legit serial number then passing it off as the real thing. I'd probably do the same thing were I to sell an instrument on ebay.
10. It's a small world. I went to St Mary's, just down the road in Astley.
11.
There should always be at least one Stage 1 on the forum for sale This is a 2004 model, natural finish, in pretty much mint condition, comes with a slightly battered hard case Pics later Asking price is £625, not in a rush to sell, which is a good thing when selling a Warwick these days! I may also be parting with my 2002 Dolphin 5 string, but it needs a new neck pick up first! Tony
Are Warwicks unfashionable at the moment or out of favour with some players? Mine a 92 Streamer S1 and I just lurve it to bits. I wouldn't mind it having a little brother but the wife'd kill me.
12.
NOT REALLY!!!!!!! This is what gets right up my nose sometimes. I ask a simple question, and I get the p*ss taken! All I see is some Black Guy playing some sort of Fender Bass. Thanks for the help guys!
It's Marcus Miller. I don't think anyone was really having a go (some gentle ribbing maybe). Don't know too much about him myself... he's meant to be good, he has a signature bass and that's pretty much all I know. I saw Jeff Healy play Manchester Apollo in about 92/93 and he had to be prevented falling off the stage by the bass player (not Mr Miller but the guy he played with in Roadhouse, the crappy Swayze film) who had to guide him back to his spot with several shoulder/elbow nudges.
13. Welcome to the internets friendliest site. I've been to Arizona many times to visit friends and I love it. If I ever win the lottery I'd definitely get a second home there although next time I'll pass on the chili beers from Crazy Ed's in Cave Creek. Check them out... on second thoughts, don't.
14. Welcome to the friendliest site on the web.
15. I'd love to go and put faces to avatars but I have to work. Are these bashes a regular event? I'll definitely be up for the next one.
16.
That sucks... a verbal agreement still counts as a contract... however, they know that it would cost you an arm and a leg to take them to court over this and also they get away with it knowing there's loads of bands desperate to play for virtually nothing... in fact, some bands would even pay for the "privilege"...
Unfortunately in contract law a verbal agreement does NOT amount to a contract in English civil law (although it IS in France should anyone ever gig there) and is therefore unenforceable and you are unlikely to be able to claim compensation. It is a while since I studied contract law in any detail but Im not aware of any changes and I'm happy to be corrected if anyone knows any different. Basically, get it in writing!
17. My cats have done exactly the same thing with my Trace Elliot combo. An electric shaver will tidy it up if you are careful. I also need to glue some of the carpet back in place. Bloody cats!
18.
I here you OTPJ. I had a Geddy and it wasn't great, output wise (not to mention the dodgy tuners imo). Suffice to say, my 99 MIM Jazz was a lot better (wish i hadn't sold it). A lot of people here seem to like US Fender-bashing, i imagine due to the price tag. Yes, Japanese Fenders are built superbly but in my experience having owned both Japanese and US basses, i have to say i am a US fan.
As an aside to the above If you log onto www.bassplayer.tv Geddy states that the new GL Jazzes will have upgraded tuners.
19. I see. Simple really
20. I keep seeing 'bump' in posts. Am I being dense but what does it mean?
21.
Ha, I was expecting one of those dot maps that showed the concentrations of instruments in the world., like a follow up to the how many basses do we own thread.
So was I. Doh!
22. Well I'm in a real pickle at the moment as I'm seriously thinking of selling one of my basses to fund a Les Paul I've fallen in love with. That's right a Les Paul guitar with six skinny strings. I really don't what to do to get over this latest GAS.
23. I'm the proud owner of a Spector Euro LX in a natural finish which I bought from a BCer. Truly stunning basses if a little hard to control at times as the pickups are beasts. The only thing that bugs me is that a bass of this quality should come with a hard case as standard. It sounds like the boss at SC Glasgow was being a bit of a dick for not letting the salesman throw in a gig bag, it's the very least they could do for such a quality instrument. But then again that company isn't particularly customer friendly (I've had a bad experience with the Salford store). They should keep an eye on the demise of the Bass Centre and not repeat their mistakes. With all these cheap flights to Prague I often wonder if it'd be doable to fly over there and buy my next Spector (spalted maple 5 string) from a Czech dealer.
24. And not wanting to feel left out, hello from yet another Manc.
25. He played a Wal last time I saw them live at Manchester Academy approx 4 years ago. It was the gig when a very good humoured Dolores threw some teddies she'd collected on her travels into the audience. Thought she'd be bit of a misery but she came across very well.
