1. My Covers have been in use now for a couple of weeks and I have to say they are excellent. Top quality and perfect fit. Happy boy!
2.
What pedals do you use? Si
I'm using a TU-3, EBS Billy sheehan, MXR M87 Comp, Fender ABY, Boss GE7-B & a Sansamp para driver. May add a chorus/flanger..
3.
No-one said you had to buy anything!
Got to get to Andy Baxter's one day. His website makes me drool on a daily basis.
4. Looking to upgrade my power supply for the pedal board folks. The Voodoo Lab PP2 is top of the list but I'm only stalling due to it being £150. What is everyone using? I like the idea of isolated supply for each pedal but not sure I can justify £150..
5. Have you thought of the EBS Billy sheehan signature drive pedal? Loads of options with that one due to both the OD and clean 'channels' having their own separate FX loops (via 'Y' cable). Also good for saving your Low end because the clean and OD channels have independent volume knobs as opposed to a blend knob. All in all I find it something of a swiss army knife when it comes to bass OD.
6. From your list it would be LPB for me, would work really nice with a matching headstock I think...
7. Where's Alex? He should have a proper technical answer for this!
8. If your budget allows, you wont be disappointed with a Barefaced cab. Alex is very helpful and will discuss personally with you which of his cabs would suit your style best. They're also the only manufacturer I know who give a month long trial after you get the cab(s), so you can actually trial them on gigs. If you don't like them you can send them back and get a refund (minus your deposit)
9. My band plays a wide variety of venues from very small bars / pubs, right through to marquees etc. I have 2 Barefaced supercompacts and dependent on venue size I either use one or both of them with the same amp (PUMA500), works well for me. So yeah, you could either look at trading/px'ing your 2x12 for two 1x12s or just get a second smaller cab and use with your Streamliner.
10. My only issue with the PUMA was that the treble control is centred at 8khz. This was out of the range of my Barefaced Supercompact (no tweeter) so I struggled for top end. So the issue was my cab rather than the amp, actually. I ended up putting a sansamp para driver at the end of my chain before the amp, set the amp flat, and that worked really well for me.. So just be aware of that if your cab(s) don't have tweeters or other high frequency drivers.
11. I can see the advantage on a 5 string for Fanned frets, it's the most common problem people find on 5 strings being that the fundamental tone of the B sounds different to the other 4 strings. But I can't see that it would really improve a 4 string that much? Perhaps you have to play one to find out, which I havent..
12.
I`ve never used an amp that I couldn`t get a sound I was reasonably happy with, but then using a Precision you can get a workable sound from most amps.
AMEN!
13.
Anyone had an opportunity to compare the Tecamp Puma 900, MarkBass LM800 / F500 and TC Electronic BH800 models?
I did just this when looking for a new amp - Tecamp and the Markbass both super clean, Tecamp more proper 'flat' to my ears and was what I ended up buying (500 version). Wasn't fussed on the TC, to my ears it sounded too hi-fi and processed (Scooped) even set flat. One thing I found out too on my quest for a new amp - a lot of the modern amps which have rotary eq's have the treble setting at 5khz+ (the PUMA and the LMiii treble knob is 8khz), not really much use if your cab doesn't have a tweeter or other high frequency driver. This became very apparent when I took my Barefaced super compact along with me too Bass direct to try a few amps out..treble knobs on both the tecamp and the Mark didn't have any effect through the SC. I bought the PUMA because it sounded the most transparent to me and I use it set 100% flat. I have a Sansamp paradriver last in my effects chain and tone shape from that..Still a rotary EQ but the treble is 4khz (suits the SC) and the mid is semi-parametric so I use it at about 1.5khz and get all the top end I need with a little boost on both the mid and the treble. The puma seems to really suit having a separate preamp in front of it. It's own EQ controls are better employed to suit the room rather than tone shaping..
14. Sandberg? German hand-made (well, hand finished?) quality for Fender pricing! I'd been a pure Fender man until I tried a Sandberg at Bass Direct, couldn't leave without it!! Very much considering buying another!!
15.
Update. My mate bought a Laney for a tenner. He says it's ok. It cost him £100 to get playing again: bass £80, amp £10, lead £10! Not bad I reckon. Jack
Brilliant! should go in the 'Bargain' thread that!
16.
This is all very true, however if someone posts asking for an order of 7 pedals (so quite a few thousand combinations possible) I think saying 'whatever sounds good' is somewhat misleading and a bit lazy. In most situations, some effects typically work better in a certain order, unless your style is experimental noise (in which case you probably wouldn't need any help from a forum). Just my 2p.
I don't think its lazy or misleading to suggest that someone has a go to see what works for them, my point is that by trying different orders you can see what you like and what you don't, and in doing so, you will definitely have a bit of fun and most likely learn something.. It depends heavily on whether you are going to combine effects, i.e., have more than one pedal on at a time. If only one pedal is ever going to be on at a time, then it makes no real difference how you order them. But yes - if you are combining effects, they can sound different depending on how you order them..as an example there are many threads on here where people argue black and blue over where an 'always on' compressor goes in the chain.
17. I know the Final is on TV on Tuesday, but does anyone know who won? AFAIK The Latitude Festival (which the winner gets to play at) has been and gone? Last weekend I think... Have to add that Helen Sanderson is a beautiful lady isn't she?
18. I've got one of those line 6 lowdown 15 watt 8in speaker things. OK sound wise, and the modelled compressor on it is actually quite good. Got an aux in and headphone out too which is quite useful.. Only down side is the fuzzy covering they have. Only because the cat has decided it's a scratching post and the amp now looks like it's got an afro wig on! Also got the TC BH250 head which you can run without speakers and has an aux in / headphone out. Tiny too..
19.
If anyone says "it should be this order", report them. Paying about with fx is half the fun.
THIS!!
20.
The gigs in question have generally been cab provided but all bands required to bring their own amp heads (seems a bit weird to me really).
Doesn't see strange to me at all - most of the gigs I did when I was in an originals band were just like that. Cab provided, bring your own head. Lots of love on here for the GK mb fusion - haven't got one personally but they're well liked and something of a 'jack of all trades' regarding sound shaping as far as I can gather. I looked around a few months ago and ended up with the Tecamp PUMA 500 - same size and weight as a hardback book. If I'm honest its' not the most useful for tone shaping, the EQ on it is better employed for suiting the room. I just use a Sansamp para driver before it and really only use it as a power amp.
21.
It's not the best amp in the world but it's built well, is tough and has been supremely reliable.
YUP! - An old peavey TNT ain't gonna win any awards for tone, but it'll get you heard and certainly last til the end of the gig!
22. You're right JT. When you come across the DB's, you know. Right now I think my rig is the DB's, but I might be on a festival show in the coming weeks and have to use an SVT and an 810 and then I might decide that's the DB's and be trading my rig in. It's all subjective, and people will have their own reasons for their preference - that's all I was really trying to say.
23.
Ashdown Electric Blue. 1x12 or 1x15. Can be had for peanuts secondhand and a nice sounding, well built amp than can cut it in a gig situation. Earliest ones were 150w, 2nd gen are 180w, 3rd gen are 220? All very usable!
I'd agree with this - or perhaps an old Peavey TNT/TKO if you can find one..
24. Point taken - but there are elements of the thread where people are comparing class-D with Valve amps, not with other class-D amps, which in my opinion (waving it around ) doesn't really get to a conclusion at all. It's (kinda) like Vinyl vs. CD, that's really the point I was trying to make. Perhaps the point of the thread wasn't to arrive at a definitive answer, which is fine. No offence was intended..
