1.
D'oh forgot the Retroglide! And of course all the ABM and JJ bits as and when. Very tempted to get an EVO IV....
Me too Merton - I used an evo2 300 head for years and I loved the EQ points, worked so well for me...changed to a class-d setup this year (tecamp) and had to chase down the sound I was looking for after using the evoii for so long - ended up buying a sansamp para-driver (same as the bass driver but with a sweepable mid control) and that pretty much got me there. Thing is what I spent on the amp and the sansamp, could have bought me the EVO IV head. Live and learn!
2. Very interesting thread this one, not something I'd considered to be honest - can see solid state and valves discussed above, what about digital amps? same as solid state?
3.
I was back there again on Wednesday to pick up the Super Twin I ordered 2 weeks ago. Carried it back to my house just under a mile away (which was a bit ambitious - 'lightweight' is a relative term). Won't have a chance to run it at gig volume for another week, but even just ticking over at neighbour-respecting levels it sounds great. Big thanks to Alex, Bobby and team.
Wait til the speakers break in fully - they sound even better!!
4. If you just want to de-couple from the floor by a small amount them get a gramma pad. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Auralex_Isolation_Risers.html
5. I talked a fair bit about this with the guys at Bass direct when buying my Sandberg VM5 - Their opinion was that it has a lot to with construction and hardware, plus scale length also helps. Basically more of the modern 5/6 string basses are built from the beginning as 5/6 string basses, whereas a lot of the big manufacturers build to the same specs as the 4-string but just add what is needed to get the 5th/6th string on to the bass, if that makes sense. Look at a sandberg - 6 neck bolts, chunky bridges etc.. Also if you don't believe scale length makes any difference - Go to Bass Direct's Youtube channel and have a listen to a Dingwall, where the Fan-fret system means the low B can be as much as 37" scale. The B on those things never sounds muddy / floppy.
6. Mick Quinn from Supergrass played an old Ibanez P-type (dunno if it was a roadstar or a blazer) for a long-ass chunk of their heyday - saw them live a few times and he certainly always had a great sound. Personally I was never fussed on the oversized headstock on the 4 a side tuner ones - messed with my OCD.
7. Top Amps - I've got the 500 watt version and that's very loud so the 900 should be immense! I also just use the taste control depending on the room i'm in and leave the EQ flat. GLWTS.
8. Have you considered the Tecamp range? I've got a PUMA 500 - very transparent sounding amp, I use it set completely flat and all tone shaping done on the bass itself (Sandberg VM5) or on the pedal board. Also is the size / weight of your average hardback book!
9. Very tempted by the maple necked one - Very Nice!
10. Cool! - Lucky you, I'd love to spend a little time with Alex and talk bass for a while. Love my G3 supercompacts!! Great name by the way!
11. If it's gonna be 'always on' and only used as an effect rather than a D.I., then I'd personally put it early in the chain. But as said above, try it in a few different places and see what sounds best to you, ideally at gig / rehearsal volume if you can, or, even better, in a full band mix. In my experience you only really know if it's right when you can gauge how things sound when everyone else is playing too.
12. Very nice looking - Of course the most important question on a Five string - What's the B like?
13. Put a black scratchplate on it, then you'd have something very purrdy.
14. What do I know? http://www2.fender.com/support/articles/korean-instruments-product-dating/
15. Spotted this on Ebay just now: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Jazz-Bass-MIK-1990-USA-Accessories-and-outstanding-condition-/262086982600?hash=item3d0599fbc8 Didn't know there was such a thing as an MIK Fender? Happy to be proven wrong! - I've just never seen one before...
16.
Give Ashdown a shout, their customer service is amazing!
Can vouch for that - always had good, timely replies from them just by using their website 'contact us' form...
17. It also says this: C. Protection Features The Tone Hammer 350 is equipped with several protection circuits designed to prevent any damage to the amplifier in cases where the limits of the normal operating range are breached. Protections include an over current, an over temperature, DC, and HF detectors. If any of these circuits are triggered, the amplifier will either limit its output power, or shut down. In case of a shut down the amplifier will rapidly try to restart, checking if the faulty condition is still present. In case of shut down, both Operate and Status lights will turn off. Perhaps some are confusing the 'clip' light with the 'Status' light? Sorry - I know you're looking for an answer from an actual TH350 user - which I'm not! just trying to help...
18. Only one I can see for sale is his MIM Geddy? Not the USA...
19. I've got one of the the Blue sparkle ones from 2009. Was actually one of the first to come into the UK...Bloody Marvelous! I've also put the new spb-4 pickup in mine (comes standard on the white one now)
20. From the manual - When the Clip light turns red it indicates that the preamp is being driven into clipping. Clipping can be a desirable characteristic, depending on your taste. If you would like a cleaner sound you can experiment with the input pad, Gain, Drive, and Tone Controls. All of these things, including the output level of your bass, affect how often the light will go off. Clipping the Tone Hammer 350 will not cause any shutdowns or damage to your amplifier. That should clarify it!!!
21. There's a long running thing about TC overstating their Wattage ratings. Regardless of what opinions are the RH750 has a lot of fans and I for one would't be too deterred (the RH750 is certainly an amp I'd like to have in my arsenal!) The best advice is to try them all and see what sounds best to your ear. Helpful if you're able to use your own bass and cab too. When I went to Bass Direct to do something similar earlier this year I did that and they were fine with it. (did ask up front mind)
22.
Excellent on Later Live last night.
Yeah I posted on facebook last night that he was sounding great and got a 'like' from Mark Gooday. Which was cool.
23. Think the confusion is being caused by the P/J pickups. I don't believe any US production models have that as standard, has the J pickup been added maybe?
