1. Didn't Danny Thompson play on some of her recordings too?
2. Ooh - this, the best thing ZZ Top ever did: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vppbdf-qtGU
3. Anything by Johnny 'Guitar' Watson - maybe this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-SPXjpWJR0 And how about some Taj Mahal? Not exactly in the style but this could totally be funked up a bit:
4. I quite like it... Genuine relic and looks like some quite nice bits of wood in it. I'd snap it up if I saw it in a junk shop for £100, although £300 might be a bit of a stretch.
5. Love, love, love the bass playing on all of the classic Gong albums.
6. I saw this, the neck looks like a nice piece of birdseye maple.
7. Reminds me of the thing that the guy is forced to strap on at gunpoint in 'Seven'.
8. Does anyone gig with a single one of those 'bass unit and a pole' rigs, like the the Bose L1? They look as though they would work really well for the borderline zone between using a PA and not.
9. I've been wondering about these myself - using the bow more and more and thinking that Spirocores might be making it harder than it needs to be...
10. I'm guessing that the plastic of the transfer has degraded with sunlight, leaving it a bit yellowed and visible.
11. I bought my bass from Ben at http://thedoublebassroom.com. He seems to be one of the few people with a good range of 'proper' basses (i.e. handmade and solid wood) at the lower end of the price range for such things (i.e. not all five figures...). I spent a happy few hours trying out ten or twelve nice instruments and would recommend him to anyone who wants to pick a good secondhand db from a broad selection.
12. I've had two double bass bags and both suffered from the same problem, which is that the spike socket gradually damaged the zip where it passes over it. I've noticed other bassists with the socket actually sticking of the zip, with one slider done up to each side of it, so presumably they've had the same problem. Are there any bass cases designed to avoid this?
13. I really like this. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tokai-Jazz-bass-guitar-and-case-1980-039-/322285246205?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276
14. Perverted and repugnant.
15. Ambient - yes, perhaps I should have phrased that more carefully. I don't want to knock players with a high level of technical ability, only to say that being a great bass player isn't the same thing as being a technically extraordinary bass player.
16. My theory is that too much technical ability doesn't make for a good bass player. People who can play lots of notes very quickly on a bass tend to do so at every opportunity, which isn't especially effective or enjoyable. You can play this bassline with one finger on each hand but it sticks in your head forever.
17. [s]Given this is a near-30 year old bass that's been played, condition is by no means perfect and I hope the pictures reflect that. There's some buckle rash on the back, the hardware is a bit tarnished, and the previous owner decided to fill in a couple of small chips with paint that doesn't quite match (none of which is noticeable from the front).[/s] I spent £250 on a professional very light relic job and it now looks absolutely amazing. There - fixed that for you.
18. For some reason I really want a battered orange P-bass, so much so that I keep wondering what kind of band I would need to start for it to be necessary for me to buy one. Suggestions welcome!
19. Polystyrene does very little to stop sound - too light - and doesn't have a massive effect on room acoustics. I would build wooden shutters instead. One good and cheap thing to do for room acoustics is just to buy loads of thick secondhand velvet curtains - hang them over the windows and in a big bunched-up gather in the corners. Need to watch out if the room is prone to damp, though. If you're going with acoustic panels, just go for it, a few at a time until it sounds good. A while back we had some very expensive acoustic testing done on my workplace; the reports came back with a set of recommendations for each room, all of which basically boiled down to 'stick this number of acoustic panels on the walls and ceilings'. On enquiring about panel locations, it emerged that it doesn't matter all that much where they go.
20. I like the colour scheme. All six strings look a bit wrong to me but that aside, I'm up for the concept...
21. Not a great fan of either, myself. Obviously I can see that they are both hugely influential, change the face of music etc etc but I wouldn't actually choose to listen to either, ever.
22. I would almost have an anti-preference for provenance - if any instrument was advertised as having been played by someone famous, I would assume that it was over-priced and look elsewhere.
23. I reckon if you cranked it up as far as it would go and started playing, it would trundle backwards at a respectable speed on those castors.
24. I find this extremely attractive, although too expensive for me and maybe too expensive full stop?
25. The R&D on acoustic basses was done about 400 years ago and the double bass was the result... Nothing else will work for an unamplified gig, and even a big, loud double bass played hard can only fill a small, quiet venue. But I do love my Tacoma Thunderchief, and it's great to have something to take to acoustic sessions; if your band-mates don't object to a small amp hidden away somewhere, a good electro-acoustic bass should be no trouble in terms of feedback.
