Electro harmonix compressors I've found to be quite good. Especially the black finger (tube) compressor. Although the white finger is also excellent.
they're amazing, and totally transparent. i picked up my blackfinger secondhand for only 85 pounds off of here. it can do all sorts of compression, from light and transparent to really hard...and it really does sound amazing -- the only drawback is, it's quite large, and it needs its own power supply.

i've got one of these, works really very well...some others on here have got them as well. never had any noise or smps filtering problems, is smaller than the maplin one, and can supply easily supply 1500ma of current.

finally have a pedalboard! (err...bag....whatever) want to get a delay maybe, but other than that i think i'm pretty much set for now, and for the foreseeable future.

my housemate has one of these he uses for acoustic guitar, and i've been pretty impressed by it, considering the price. If you've got a bit more to spend, one of these is again, very impressive for the price. Haven't actually pushed a power amp with either of them, however i'd imagine them both to work perfectly fine, as they seem to put out a pretty strong signal.
Got one of these puppies, it sounds and looks fantastic although I don't think they're made anymore. Only 65w with 2 x 10in speakers. May still be able to pick one up second hand somewhere
+1 to this one, really great amp. probably can be found for under a 100 s/h as well, as unfortunately they stopped production of them.
-
what if you used a different cheap preamp, and rack mount it along with the power amp?....there must be something out there what would work
You're quite correct. There are many factors behind how a particular driver sounds, but the magnet material is not one of them. If a driver that's strong in the mids happens to have a neo magnet, or vis-versa if you choose, it's purely coincidental. A driver has strong mids because its designer configured it to do so.
that does make sense. where did the myth come from then?...because it seems quite widely known.

the contacts could just be dirty, or one of the jacks could just have wiggled loose of its solder connection -- the only way to find out is to take a look. be careful of the 14 pin IC that's in there as it is somewhat sensitive to static, etc...nothing to worry about too much though, the whole circuit is pretty simple. the easiest fix, for me, was to take some pickup mounting foam and wedge it in so that when the jacks pulled in or out, the force was applied to that, and nothing else.

my sansamp will if you push the "1/4 inch out boost" button. don't know about the behringer. edit: didn't seen the "balanced, low z" part of your post. i honestly don't know, the DI out of my sansamp seems to be at about line level, which makes me think that it would not be ideal for getting the most out of the power amp.
silly idea i know
not at all -- if i could, the front of my amp would look like this: honestly, there's just something about them i love.

Great guy, just sent me a whole bunch of leads for free, didn't even have to pay postage! Can't get better than that! Would definitely deal with him again -- highly recommended! EDIT: just wanna add, even though they were only cables, they were really well packed, padded and everything
I did try one of those and it still hummed. Mind you, it wasa cheapo maplin one
the maplin one doesn't have isolated grounds between effects, and in doing some further research, neither does the dunlop haha. to get isolated grounds, you'd need to go to something like the voodoo pedal power or the burkey flatliner
thanks for the advice. I dont like the sound of having 6 of the Line 6 psu's. apart from the cost that would just be a right royal pain in the erse. I;ve got one of the LIne 6 DC-1 power supplies but been using a couple of the other pedals with duracells, and they eat their way through them. I think the minimum draw is something like 70ma. Looks like I'm going to have to soldier on with the XT Live till I can find a viable solution. shame as I prefer the sound of the pedals over the multi fx board would it be worth contacting Line 6 or are they just going to tell me to buy another 5 DC-1's?
line6 will probably just tell you to get another 5 dc-1's. the best bet is to just spend the money and get a power supply that has isolated grounds between each effect, or get rechargeable batteries i suppose...
-
Somebody told me the power filtering in Line 6 pedals is piss poor and if you use a single PSU and daisy chain them, they can produce hum - I tried it once with a crap PSU and got hum, but never with my Diago. The suggestion was made that the best thing you could do with Line 6 effects was to run them off individual power supplies.
this is true. however, as long as each supply is isolated from each other (such as in the Dunlop brick and others -- NOT daisy chained ones) there shouldn't be a problem. and if line6 knew how to do their job right, there wouldn't be a problem at all.

why not use RMAA?
Yeah, but the jazz with the tube is still there, pretty tempting!
here i thought i was being original when i thought to put a tube pre-amp in a bass...seems someone beat me to it

the meter on my ashdown is actually on the output. and lot more useful, i find.
Thankyou for your kind offer but unfortunately I'm in south London. Will let you all know what I end up with
i'm actually going to be in wembley for a few days either next week or the week after, and i'll have my bass with me anyways, so just let me know.

I've got Lindy Fralin's in my bass, and they're amazing...a bit more expensive but (i think) definitely worth it. if you're anywhere near cambridge, you're welcome to come have a go on my bass.
-
just got a pedal case from him; very easy and shipped right away, real pleasure to deal with. would highly recommend!
-
unless i missed something, the problems seems to be that what he has isn't loud enough....so sticking with what he has wouldn't really work... if you like the line6, then what if you switched to one of their modeling preamps, and then a power amp with some sort of cab that didn't color the sound too much?
if you're bringing it to the Bash, I'll take it off your hands
if i can get a ride from someone, then it's yours!
