1.
That's OK, I don't know what an 'a**' is.... It's a good sounding amp and suits me fine for most situations. It doesn't even weigh that much considering it's a 4x10 valve amp! I did consider trading it in for a Markbass a while ago, but thought I'd ask this question first.
haha it's a rude word for one's bum. if you really love the amp, then give Alex Claber a PM (alexclaber) and see what his thoughts are on it -- it's likely that one of his cabs, such as the Big Sub or whatever it's called, might do the trick for you in terms of adding to the bass response.
 2. honestly not trying to sound like a complete a**, but: it seems this amp really best suits a certain style of music, and that perhaps that isn't the same style that you play? So the most efficient solution may be to get something else, in this case. Failing that, I would agree with Mr Foxen and say that the best bet is to bypass the internal drivers and just use external cabs -- however i'd imagine that would leave an awful lot to carry round.
 3.
It's just what that midrange speaker does - pistonic output drops gradually above 1kHz and then the cone break-up modes kick in. Fortunately that's a rather nice sound and those break-up modes and the phase plug are what gives it superior off-axis response to every other midrange driver I've looked at. Alex
yea, no don't get me wrong, it looks really good. i just didn't know if that was a design feature, or if that was the driver characteristics. i'd love to try one someday -- the off axis performance is very impressive what midrange driver did you end up going with, if you don't mind my asking?
 4. nice off axis response is there a reason for the dip at 2k and peak at 5k?
 5. mythbusters generally have dubious science at best, and usually come to the conclusion they want to come to, regardless of whether it's correct or not. i watch it, i don't know why as it annoys me, definitely a case of broadcasting to the lowest common denominator there -- treat the viewer like a complete moron seems to be their approach. anyways, as usual Alex is entirely correct esp. in regards to the speaker surrounds. car systems are generally an absolute joke for doing anything more than making one frequency really loud and with massive amounts of distortion. they are mostly sold entirely on marketing BS and cater exclusively to the very same class of people who seem to believe that stickers make your car go faster. as with everything, there are exceptions -- some car systems can be really quite good. odds are, as with anything, the less flashy and annoying it is, the better it likely is. round speakers are also much stronger for a given weight and material composition due to their geometric shape, and thus less likely to flex or have only parts of the driver responding (although that is obviously unpreventable at higher frequencies.) it's not so much about surface area as it is about efficiency and displacement
 6. through-bridge, status roundcore all. never had a need to do any weird mixing stuff -- except of course when i break a string and have to use whatever spare i can find in my gigbag!
 7.
I swear you're meant to have the mics at least a metre away from the cab. Well, that recording magazine aboutrecording bass sucks butt!
that doesn't look like the most....er....acoustically ideal room. so, it's probably best that they were close mic'd. ^_^ PS -- As with any recordings, the key is to do what sounds best -- hence the above usage of 4 mics (presumably one will sound best, without the need for multiple takes to change mic's over). Generally, IME, close mic'ing sounds best on bass, although some mics can give a proximity bass buildup effect if too close.
 8. You'll want to use marine or other deep-cycle batteries, as they can be discharged almost fully without damage. Also, there is no way a 165 Ah battery is going to source 55 amps for three hours -- that's not exactly how the Ah rating is performed. It would be like assuming a tiny little 2700mAh AA battery could actually produce 2.7 amps for an hour -- not going to happen! A load of them in parallel might work however. What does work in your favor, is that your amp is no way going to draw maximum wattage continuously when it's on. Just one more point -- it would make sense I think, for this application, if you were to use a 24V series/parallel system instead -- the lower current demand on the batteries will actually mean they last longer per discharge.
 9. Barefaced Big One is designed for good off-axis response.
 10.
Is there a substitute for a wire coathanger for a pop-shield? I expect we'll get some tights and get the drummer and g-tardist to hold it in position! xD
perhaps if you got a fairly large diameter (6-8 inches) plastic or metal container, and used a saw or a knife to cut out a ring of it about 1cm deep -- then stretch the tights over that. one other piece of advice i forgot to mention earlier is to put the mic slightly above the singer's mouth, if you find you are having trouble with excessive sibilance.
 11. i think it's quite funny that everyone is going on about mac vs pc when it's really not going to matter for this application. garageband is likely the easiest but it's hardly worth the outlay of buying a mac just for that. meanwhile there's been hardly a mention, or in some cases no mention, of the things that do matter -- room acoustics, microphones, interfaces (any decent interface will have preamps good enough for this application), monitors -- not to mention the thing which will matter most of all, knowing what you are doing! If you don't know how to use microphones properly or do any of numerous other things, or even if you do think you do know -- don't underestimate the importance of getting a few books on the subject!
 12.
hmmm, not as far as I know... The Akai's working just brilliantly! What are the aux sends actually for?? I tried sending signals thorugh them (and pluggin in the auxes to monitors) as I presumeed they were monitor outputs. Doesn't matter - not as thought we actually need 4 seperate monitors!
the aux sends are so you can route individual channels out through external hardware, and then back into the mixer. at least, that's what i used them for. there may be something in the manual?
 13.
haha, well at the moment it's the mics and your recorder!! xD oh and our guitarists' 2 week old 8gb of RAM macbook pro haha
how's the Akai working out for you?
 14.
just out of intrest, which of these would you use for mic'ing bass, Or would you just go ahead and DI? Thats just an aside cos I've already done the bass DIing and it sounded nice and clear (and bassy) for my tastes!
i've use a SM57 on bass before, i found it to work quite well when blended with a DI -- but to be honest, I would probably just use the DI. as far as vocals go, as Simon said, use the one which sounds the best with that vocalist. the SM57 with a pop filter will probably be ok, i've not used the E840 though so couldn't say. really, it does depend on what is going to suit the vocalist. It's hard to say about EQ or anything else specifically as it really does depend on the mic, the vocalist, the recording environment, and what other equipment you've got available.
 15. -1 for the C1000, there are much better sounding mics out there for the price -- such as the Studio Projects B1 or B3, or if you really need a battery powered condenser for some reason, the Rode M3 is not bad and fairly versatile. IME, YMMV, etc... edit: I should add as well though, that a PC is fine for home recording. Mine is coming up 5 years old now and I'm still able to do pretty much whatever I need to, including our latest album. Pair up a decent soundcard like the EMU 0404 USB and the software of your choice (Reaper seems to be the popular recommendation, I've not used it), get a book on studio practice and recording technique if you need one, this one is pretty good IME. Of course, if you want a Mac, and can easily afford one, then by all means get one -- they are brilliant for recording (although you'll still want to get an external soundcard such as the one above, some mics, monitors, etc.)
 16. forget the basses, i want a puppy!!
 17.
Weird statistics .. How many school have harps? Even here in Wales they are a rarity ...
i was thinking that too... i think we all knew this already, but still it's a shame things aren't closer to 50/50 for contemporary instruments like guitar, bass, and drums.
 18. you might want to check out the Markbass R500 and a Barefaced Compact, Big One, or Vintage -- depending on what you want/need/can afford/etc.
 19. When I was 11, I saw a bass guitar in person for the first time, and I knew right then, even though I played other instruments at the time, that that was the instrument that I wanted to spend the rest of my life playing. My only regret is, I p*ssed about for another 7 years before actually doing something about it. Not really that bad in the scope of things though, I think.
 20.

that is one seriously relic'd jazz bass.
 21.
I don't know about the musical merits but if it was a 'robot wars' type face-off I'd put my TE 7215 combo in against anything of similar size, it's a hard b*s*ard
the old HH bass machine or bass baby combos would totally take it down
 22. nice one!
 23. i can just barely make out the bass -- with those built in camera mics, you're lucky the whole audio track wasn't distorting as is the norm, seemingly. they're not really designed for that though, in fairness. if you can get something like a zoom H2, and used that to record the audio then match it up to the video later, i think you might be quite impressed with the results. it annoys me more when people (musicians even!) don't set the levels right in recordings and broadcasts and the audio distorts horribly -- grrr! recently had what would have undoubtedly been an amazing live performance to watch over the internet completely ruined for me by poor technical setup.
 24.
I bloody hope it'll be worth it!
I don't doubt it will be Room looks so much bigger now without the scaffolding, positively epic. It's really great to see such a well-designed live room being built.
 25.
whats the relevance of the old ampeg cabs?? pretty sure mine is a very old one.i'll have to check.
iirc (and i could be way off) the originals had guitar drivers in them that had very low excursion limits, so in order to actually handle the bass frequencies put out by the 300 watt ampeg head, two cabs had to be used. these would have been the very old cabs though, even if your cab is 30 years old it's still too new for this to apply. but like i say, i could be way wrong. i'm sure someone will correct me. the point is, really, that there's no practical application for 2 8x10's -- and it will in fact just make the radiation pattern less predictable.
