1.
...when a punter says you have "better technique that Chris Squire" because you don't play with a pick!
people, even other bassists sometimes, think i am literally amazing because i play with all four fingers when i play fingerstyle -- but i always think, if they payed attention to what i was playing, instead of how i was playing it, they'd realize i was utter rubbish! ^_^
 2. RMS is the one to go by. The criteria for determining "Program Power" is so widely varied as to be pretty much meaningless. It would be nice if manufacturer's could actually stick to one of the standards developed for testing RMS power, instead of inflating their specs all the time....but I won't rant about it now....
If you want feedback... I looked at the site, and it looks great, as does the gear. However, I have no idea what the m:system is. Is this me being stupid? I've read about the features of the m:system, but have no idea what it is or what it does!
me neither, i just assumed it was some sort of rewire system. was trying to figure it out but then i cba...looks cool, whatever it is. the rest of the site/stuff looks great.
 4. i used to keep my bass on a guitar stand in my room, but my girlfriend at the time kept swinging the door open and letting it crash into the bass (not intentionally, just not paying attention). a few gouges in the body from the door later, and my bass was kept in it's case from then on.
 5.
For me it would be Aqua, Yellow or Lime
+1, love the yellow a lot.
 6.
I quickly decided that I wish I had gone with a more straightforward ceiling design! I found that if I stand on a 7 foot tall platform on my tip toes, with extendable roller at full extension, I can just reach the highest point of the ceiling... but I can't get into the corners... doh!
haha oh no! looking good so far though -- maybe time for the return of some scaffolding?
 7. assuming each member of this bass forum actually owns at least one bass, or that the few that may not own one are covered by those that own more than one (hence averaging to at least one, not exactly a wild assumption) -- this count is WAY off.
 8.
You mentioned Barefaced, but really, if I was to buy a cab nowadays that's what I'd get.
+1
 9.
sans beard now - think i miss it though. razors cost a bloody fortune! do i really need 5 blades? Do i?!!!
you do to tame that beard i know what you mean though, which is why i stick to the 3 bladed ones -- have worked for me for the better part of ten years, don't see a reason to buy into the marketing and spend any more!
 10. 1442 +1 = 1443 although i have a feeling this may not be accurate at the moment, as this thread was started like a year and a half ago?
 11. when you actually know the difference between instrument cable, and speaker cable.
 12. When you're the only one actually helping the drummer load in and out all his kit, even though you've still got to set up/take down your own -- which of course, no one else is going to help with.
 13.
I have tried to find it in the repairs forum, but to no avail. What is the problem? Please be accurate.
here, it looks like.
 14. looking good, alex!
 15.
Just got the call. Didnt get the gig, some other fella 'fit' better, blah blah blah blah blah, sorry, thanks for all the effort, blah blah blah, mumble mumble..... Right ho then. Kinda relieved, to be honest, he even said on the phone that they consider themselves to be fascistic about the bass - phew!
what a load of sh*t! i'm sorry to hear that dude, especially after two auditions -- but to be honest, it really does sound like you are better off without them. you will find something much better, i don't doubt it -- not to mention the fact you certainly deserve much better!
 16. me too, you are good to go!
 17. yes, i would also recommend them
 18.
I've always thought of those cabs that use pressure sensors, laser interferometry or microphones as part of a feedback system as servo controlled as opposed to servo drive. Rotary motion to linear motion is easy - just like the reverse of a car engine or bicycle cranks - the problem is getting dealing with higher frequencies as even an F1 engine can't exceed ~300Hz. Alex
sorry, i suppose i didn't make much of a distinction between controlled and drive haha. good thing the rotary woofer has a low-pass filter with a cut off at 20 Hz then not very practical though, really, as you need to build the house around it.
 19.
Just found this too, which makes for interesting reading : http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread/t-140741.html I can't visualise how the motors transfer the rotary motion into linear motion though.
there used to be a really good image on the internet somewhere that showed it clearly. can't find it though basically, the servo motor controls a shaft in the middle of two speakers -- these speaker cones are attached to two belts which wrap around the central shaft powered by the motor. when the motor turns, the speakers move in and out in unison; that is to say they both move in or out at the same time, not one in and one out. edit: this site gives an idea of how the electronic ones work.
 20.
I thought servo drive subs were beltdrive, using a rotary electric motor to push and pull the cone back and forth, hence no ability above ~100Hz. Googled: http://www.ultimateavmag.com/features/704way/index3.html Alex
that is one type of mechanical servo drive, however there are electronic versions as well, which tend to be better and much much more common. some use electronic feedback, while others, such as the Meyer X-10 you mentioned the other week, use other forms such as acoustic (pressure) feedback (hence the microphone on the bar in front of the LF driver). edit: all this talk of mechanical servos has reminded me of the Rotary Woofer.
 21.
wasn't billy sheenan using them at one point?
haha i have no idea ^_^
 22. epic win, nice one -- that's like half price, isn't it? soundslive are ace
 23.
Good god, an X-Max of 27.3mm?!!! Is that how Servo drive subs work too, or is it a different mechanism?
i believe they use various forms of feedback to help increase the linearity of the cone movement -- basically giving the amp more control over the driver.
 24.
The limiting factor in excursion tends to be the motor system, not the surround, and that's where R&D still needs to be focused. Best thing I've seen was Adire's split gap topology which gave them huge excursion but low inductance and decent sensitivity. Alex
it seems they've gone out of business -- yet another casualty of the recession, i would guess there's an article about their coil technology here.
 25.
You're not wrong when you're right me ol matey. Another reason i watch it....
i liked scottie better
