2.
hi Dave, the extra wires are so you can wire it in parrallel (standard) or series. my tech wired mine in series as i wanted the extra punch, which i got.(i've just been looking for the wiring instructions that came with the pup but can't find them anywhere--sorry) i've definately got very even volume accross all strings, maybee you'll notice it in a full band practice situation. if you're not happy with it i'll swap you for my BTB
Cheers. Its not that im not happy with it, im just still not convinced ive wired it right. I realise what the extra wires are for but can find no actual wiring diagram showing what goes where. I think the Nordy instructions say something along the lines of just duplicate the original wiring. Not much help as there are a lot more wires. I had a look at the Seymour Duncan wiring chart and its showing the reverse of how i did it. The balance is pretty even, if anything the E is a bit quieter but thats fine, ill need ot mess around with the pup height a bit. So i would say its a different tone but still one i like. Im going to hold on to the MM pup, i might find i want to put it back in at some point. And if i do get a SR4 i might put the Nordy in that if needed. Ill need to play it a bit more but im sure its going to be fine. Thanks for your help.
3.
Is the Nordy a direct replacement Dave, or did you swap the covers over? How does it sound now? I found that after playing Ps and 'Rays for a while that I find J necks cramped and like playing a broomstick. This is a pain as a lot of the basses I'd like the look of feature J type necks, keeps the GAS down though . Stick with the Ray34, I found that prefer it's neck to my old US maple necked 'Ray, far less clubby.
The Nodry is a direct replacement, i didnt have to change anything over. It just dropped straight in. The only problem has was the Nordy has 5 wires and the MM only has 2. Ive done loads of searching but cant find the correct wiring diagram so i made an executive decision and wired the Black and Red together on the back of the volume pot and the other three to the circuit board. After doing this i then found the Seymour Duncan wiring diagram that shows the black and red going to the circuit board. Ive posted over on TB asking for some guidance over this so if anyone has anything to say, im all ears. If it had been a straight forward two wires i would be fine but im not really up on all this series/parallel wires lark. Whatever, it all works ok. Ive not played it much but first impressions are that its a bit smoother and tighter sounding. It might not have cured the weak G but ill have to see how it goes. Its all in the EQ IME. With the Nordy having maybe a bit less growl and a bit more refined its a bit closer to my DD/P tone although it still has the SR character. Saying that, i haven't played it in almost a week, and the strings seem a bit dead now so maybe there isnt much difference. Im just happy it still works lol. I know what you mean about narrow necks. I thought i really liked them but the more i play this bass the more i find its a bit more comfortable. Not as fast as the DD but i find im a bit more accurate with my fretting. Its harder but its getting there. I think once the DD has gone ill be able to settle down with it. I would like a proper SR4 at some point though but for now im happy to stick with the Ray34. And i feel its a bass that i wont have to worry too much about it getting scratched.
4.
Dave, will you ever be satisfied, you're as bad as me with the basses, good luck mate The GroovyPlucker
Cheers Mark. This doesn't mean completely happy with it, just being practical. Having just spent more on the pup i cant afford to sell the bass for the original asking price. Ill see how it goes for a few weeks. I do intend to replace this and get a SR4 at some point so i will sell this bass, just not right now. Still need to sell the DD though.
5. Well the Nordy is in. Im not sure if i wired it correctly but its working. I cant say for sure but im not convinced there is any difference in the G string. So far only played through my Korg Pandora and Guitar rig but as i normally do play through these i can get a pretty good idea. If anything i would say it might be a bit thinner but that might just be my imagination. The pup came with more wires than the original, so i put the black and red together and wired them to ground, and the others together and wired them to the circuit board. The old pup only had two wires. I was a bit surprised when i saw what i had to solder to, it was a bit tricky but i hope it will hold. Im sure its right but if anyone has any other thoughts lets hear them. I did email Carey on wed but not heard back form him.
6. Nordy is now in so ive withdrawn this for now. Im going to stick with it for a while and see how it goes. It will be good practice for when i get a SR4 at some point.
7. Well if you do just let me know. Daves Duck Dunn. Although im after a SR5 i think your SR4 looks fantastic. Its really the only colour combo that could sway me to a 4 string Ray.
8. Thanks Mark, thats good to know. Maybe ill have a re think. My first ever Lakland was a 55-01, i thought it sounded great for a while but something wasn't right. I upgraded the pre to a MTMB but that didnt help so i guess it was the barts. I know the 55-02 has a different set up though, im sure its going to sound great.
9.
Hi Dave, You know me so well, lol. I might just stick with this yet, am gigging it on Saturday night. But am tempted by the 55-02 yes. BTW Higgie now has your DJ5, believe he's gigging it somewhere in Essex at the weekend. How you getting on with your Musicman's? The GroovyPlucker
Mark. Glad the DJ5 has gone to a good home. Who knows, one day i might end up with it again lol. The 55-02 is a really nice bass. If i wasnt going through a MM phase at the moment i would also be very tempted. Im getting rid of the DD (yeah, after all that hassle of getting one again), the idea was to get a "real" SR4 but Ive come to the conclusion that for the money, the Ray34 is a great bass. Ive been gigging it since i got it, not had the DD outside the house since feb. Still not 100% with the string spacing/neck width but its playable. Ive got a Nordy going in it this weekend and that should be it. It looks fantastic (very close to the DJ5, all black and matching headstock) and still a few £100 lower than a second hand SR4. So now im on the look out for a SR5. They seem to have a good string spacing, plus ill keep the tone i have now with the Ray34. (although i also have my eye on something else but thats just a possible maybe). Good luck with the sale. I would be tempted in the OLP but its really not my colour.
10. Friday bump. just looking for a SR5 now. Going to keep the Ray34 so thats the SR4 covered.
11. Damn, i keep opening this thread without remembering its a fretless.
12.
but am gassing after a lakland on here,
What are you looking at now Mark? That 55-02 by any chance?
13. Thanks for the offer but i dont think ill bother going. I dont have any money to spend so will bound to get myself in debt lol. Plus i dont finish work until 6PM
14. Last Bump before i put a Nordy in it this weekend and keep it.
15. I had an email from them last night about that. Shame im in London :-(
16. Just brought a Nordy MM 4.2 off terry. Very good price, good packaging and fast delivery. Couldn't ask for more (except he comes and puts it in for me lol) Cheers Terry.
17. Ive sold a few things on here and have only found out the buyer got them by asking, after a few days of waiting to her from them (no one in this thread by the way). I dont think a couple of words, even just to say the goods have arrived, is too much to ask for.
18.
You should trade for a SR5 and if you don't like that trade for the quilted top USA G&L also in the for sale thread with the Jazz profile neck. Thats what you need but unfortunately the owner is looking for trades only at current but it ticks all your boxes IMHO anyway...
I know the G&L ticks all the right boxes but i really find them ugly to look at. Something about the headstock really puts me off. Plus, i know its shallow but i really prefer a scratch plate on my basses. I think it sets the shape of really nice. Gareth. Yeah, GAS is rising although i think i would be perfectly happy to keep what i have right now. And its funny but since i started this thread i think maybe a SLO or Sterling isnt the ideal neck now. Its not a SR4 thats for sure but i seem to be playing a bit cleaner on the wider neck. I just tried the DD and while its so comfortable i can feel my playing is a bit sloppy(er) Oh well, lets see what happens.
19. Pics now added, plus i quite fancy a SR5 as well. I think im going to be quite happy with the Ray34 for now, although a Sterling would be still be nice.
20. Thanks for the heads up about the pup. To be honest im not bothered if i do sell it or not, i can already live with it and i expect it will be even nicer with the Nordy in it. In fact i really like the colour of this one, and ive yet to see a SR4 with matching headstock that i could afford so i guess i should hang on to it. Its more that ive put my Duck Dunn up in a add for a possible trade for a SR4 SLO or Sterling (not that im likely to get either) as im still after a better, or more comfortable neck. Its really a last ditch attempt before i do decide to keep the Ray34. Im finding im now using it all the time and while its a great bass i cant help feel there is something just that bit better out there. Anyway, im sure ill end up keeping both for now. And if i was to ever sell the Ray34 in the future i think i would hang on to the Nordy, assuming it does fix the G issue.
21. mines being posted today so i might try and put it in at the weekend (still trying to sell the bass though). I find it a bit confusing that Nordstrand have copied the MM pup yet they have produced something that sounds different, and different enough to change the tone or volume of the G string. Here's hoping.
22. Bump to get this up to the top so for a few mins the top two adds are for the same bass lol. And a £10 price drop. Im looking for the real deal now so open to offers near the asking price.
23. Nice looking bass. I'd quite fancy this if i could sell my DD quickly. Unfortunately it wouldn't be this week (at the earliest).
24.
Have you got the measurements for a modern Stingray 4 standard neck? Im sure their site must have it. Then you can 'sort of' visualise if the standard EB MM Stingray 4 neck is for you. BTW, I measured my action on my now sold bass....its 3mm a 12th fret...approx. For me feels really fast, but it will go lower as the bridge pieces arent set ultra low. I played it for a little while just to see how much im going to miss it (and I am ) and the neck does feel a little smaller than a Precision, but not quite Jazz. If you are certain on a SLO neck, 2 band EQ, I reckon going ew will be £1100 ish maybe a little more in standard colours. Cheers and good luck! The DD will sell if it needs to.
Thanks Gareth. Your action is the same as mine then. According to the EBMM spec's a SR4 should be slightly narrower than my Ray34, but only by about 2mm. If i had to buy new i really dont think i could wait 3-4 months. I would either burst or decide i want something else before it arrived lol As ive just posted, i think i might just try and get a standard SR4. Ill still give this thread a few days before i decide ot sell the DD but yes, it shouldn't take long. As long as the price is right of course.
