I am quite surprised I haven't been considered to be honest.
Its all to do with the voting system, and minus votes dont get you appointed im afraid ;-)

Good news to see iCastle is on board (as well as the others). He seems to be one of the most level-headed people ive ever conversed with.

Looking for a gig bag with full length shoulder strap
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
Cheers guys. BRX. like i said, ive been travelling with a bag like this for 7 years, it works fine, trust me. Having the bag on one shoulder results in the bass hanging down the side of the body, not the back. I normally have a rucksack on the same shoulder as well. It just makes life easier for using the tube/trains as it means i always have two free hands. Chairc, good idea. ill try and sort it out tonight. Basically the strap is attached behind the headstock and runs all the way to the bottom of the bag. Now i know in theory this might not be ideal for transporting a bass in the upright position but after having about 8-9 basses in this bag over the years i know it works fine. For what its worth the bag came with my HW-1 bass but Fender have changed the free gig bags. -
Ive been using an old, and very un padded, Levys gig bag for the past 6-7 years but i think i need a new one. I know there are many very good bags around but it has to have a full length shoulder strap, so when its on one shoulder the top sits around head height. I definitely do not want to wear it like a rucksack nor have it sticking out above my head by a few feet etc. I used to have a angular EBMM bag that had a strap that covered the whole of the back, that was ideal although because of its shape i felt it was a bit too bulky. Money is a consideration but im willing to pay for something nice. For what its worth the Levys bag has served me very well throughout my 7 year GAS period, all my basses have travelled up and down the country in it (one at a time, obviously and while i know a lot of you need to have fully padded bag's its something that ive never really needed so a lot of padding isnt a priority. In fact the slimmer the better. Any suggestions appreciated. Cheers

Ok, point taken. The early one does look like it was mad in a kids wood work class, next to that the current headstock doesn't look too bad after all. I do prefer the third one though.
Yay! A fellow headstock-obsessive! Couldn't agree more m'chum - luv the idea of G&L, shame about the headstock... (Y'know when you're on a train and there's only one spare seat, it happens to be next to you, and then the obligatory mental person gets on, sits next to you and starts on a long rant? Well this could go that way.)
.....about fanned frets and cab frequencies lol. Its just that pointy bit in the middle i dont like. To be honest i wouldn't let it put me off buying one, all the basses ive had have had something cosmetic i dont like about them. Very nice basses though, i cant believe how cheap the non USA ones are, especially considering all the tone options.
-
Yep. agree with Fran as far as the feel goes. Ive just put some on my P and i love how smooth they are, although im coming from Dr Black Beauties and they are pretty rough. As for tone, i's say they are pretty close to Elixirs, not sure i like that but im going to stick with them. They certainly seem to have a lot of depth to them, good for the more modern songs we play.
-
Could well be the case but the original chrome control plate on my CV Jazz has tarnished quite a bit, not so the Gotoh bridge or tuners on it so i would say it may be a coincidence.

I'd love a G&L but i just cant get past that fugly headstock. Great tone though so maybe one day......

Ashdown Mag300 combo - which speaker?? (original blown!)
dave_bass5 replied to Trev69's topic in Amps and Cabs
I had to replace mine a couple of years ago. I got a Celstion BL-15 250watt 8 ohm speaker. It cost about £50 IIR. As Jack said, the original speaker is 8 ohms not 4, and as casapete said there really wont be much (if any) difference in volume, but you will limit your options for adding another cab. -
Thanks for that. One of my claims to fame...I quit a UFO tribute band a few years ago, and Pete played with them a short while later at the Limelight in Crewe. So the story to my mates down the pub is.....Pete Way was my replacement in the band. Cobblers of course, as he just happened to be able to step in on that night, and only for a handful of numbers, but it's a fun story. At least it is in my head.
Cool story. did you have to write out the tabs for him ;-)

If i wasn't just about to go off on holiday i'd seriously consider this, its gorgeous. I know we aren't supposed to question the asking price in adds but I must congratulate you on putting this up for a reasonable price, ive seen people asking way more for these and having owned one in the past i cant understand why some people ask so much for them (£500+) Good luck with the sale, im surprised this is still here.
I'm with you Clarky, it hurts my eyes. Wastes a good maple neck. IMHO, E I E I O etc.
Agree with that. I love blocks but not on a maple fretboard, no matter what colour they are.

I looked at that seller but went with Soundslive. They are only a few pence dearer, and although its free delivery mine have already been despatched :-) EDIT: Actually Soundslive are a few pence cheaper now.

Changing the sound of a Jazz bridge pickup
dave_bass5 replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
I like Jazz basses but prefer the ones with the bridge pup further away from the bridge, i think thats a 60's position or something like that. To my ears the pup sounds a bit fuller and more usable. Not an option though, just thought i'd give my view (and agreement) on the topic. I wonder if a humbucking jazz pup would be a workable solution. They are supposed to have a slightly full tone. -
Sorry, ignore that last post. After talking to Fran he has explained its the gauge thats different.

Im ready to order a set of these but noticed there are a few variations. Can anyone shed some light on the differences between the regular, hybrid and power versions? Cheers.
Apart from the lack of mid EQ, I also found the setting of the blend to be key. I rarely use more than 8 o'clock on the blend control.
Same here. The lack of mids was never a problem for me, my cab has more than enough that the slight mid loss was welcome but getting the blend just right was the key. I also like the tone with the blend right off, so its just like using active EQ.

I too took a long time to get to the point where i liked mine. In fact i had it for about two years and only used it a few times, then one day thought i'd use it and then sell it. That night it all just seemed to click and ive gone on to use something like this all the time now. (BDDI, now Paradriver). For me it was the use of the blend control that brought things to life. I had been suing it full on and while it worked at the first gig, the one i had to use it for as i had no back line) other times it sounded as described in the first post. Never used them as a pre amp though, always in front of my amp, and mostly with the drive turned off.

Yep, it's dead in the centre of London at the moment. I've just traveled out of central London on the tube and there were free seats on all carriages, unheard of on a Friday. It's also the school holidays so a lot of people have gone away.
-
Try backing the blend off. I found that by doing this i get a bit more definition and clarity.
Best gig yet with All The Queens Ravens. Played the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen. Great sound on stage, appreciative audience and we just clicked really really well. This is why I do this, still buzzing We were support act to a new Country-esque act called Phillious Williams. My word are they good, they will be signed to a record label very soon I predict
Bugger, i totally forgot about this. Sorry, maybe next time. Glad it went well. I saw the vid you posted, loved the track although not keen on the over use of narrow DOF but im sure thats just me.

First gig with my new Para driver last night. Bloody fantastic. It was a wedding in a Marquee, plenty of blokes in kilts so a very lively crowd. At one point there were more guest on stage around the mics than there are band members. Quite a few people falling about so we had to keep an eye on things but it was very enjoyable. Highlight of the night was watching two blokes fall over my cab and bass drum (both packed up waiting to go out to the car) in slow motion and not one drop of larger was spilt. The Para driver is going to work well. Ive not had a lot of time to play with it with my rig, but its brought my P bass to life. Ive never been one to use dirt or distortion but found i could get just the right tone for the Jam/Clash songs, and a very warm tone for the Motown songs. The mid control really is a bit plus over the BDDI. My rig sounded very full and deep, not something ive really experienced in this way before, not even with the BDDI.
The three most annoying things a punter can say are, in no particular order: 1) "Can you put xxxxxx on?" - Do you see record decks? 2) "Can you sing xxxxxxxxxx?" - well our singer can but what are the rest of use meant to do? We're not a barber shop quartet (thankfully) 3) After being told that we possibly couldn't do a song because no one of us have heard of it, punter says "its easy, it goes ner ner ner ner ner".At which point our singer says "Do you want to sing it?" which usually has them doing a David Copperfield and vanishing to the toilets.
And all this can happen during a song. What is it with people (not just drunks) that decide to try and chat with you while playing a song. Luckily for me its only my fingers that need to be there, not my brain so i can quite happily chat away to them, i just cant stick my finger in their eye during this time.
