  1. Anyone using or tried one? Looks quite plain to me but wondering if there is something not obvious. There is a short thread no Talkbass. https://www.talkbass.com/threads/mxr-m281-thump-bass-preamp.1443178/ MXR M281 Thump Bass Preamp The MXR Thump Bass Preamp is a tone-sweetening, signal-boosting, and altogether groove-enhancing machine. This pedal was conceived when the MXR design team and our in-house bass players discovered that the Echoplex® Preamp’s sonic secret sauce made for just as delectable a pairing with bass as it does with guitar. Using that circuitry as a foundation, the MXR team added a simple yet potent tone-shaping interface so that you can dial in the perfect bass sound for the stage and the studio. Crafting the sound you need is easy. The Echoplex Preamp circuit conditions your signal with a carefully balanced EQ profile, and this pedal’s tone controls let you take it from there. The Treble and Bass knobs cut or boost frequencies at 8 kHz and 40 Hz respectively, while the Mid knob cuts or boosts the midrange as set by the Frequency knob, from 250 Hz to 1 kHz. This range of frequencies was selected to give players maximum flexibility and minimal fuss when refining their bass signal. Whether you need to punch up a solo, boost your signal in a live mix, or sculpt more edge into the sound of a passive bass, the Thump Bass Preamp packs incredible versatility into an MXR mini housing. MXR M281 Thump Bass Preamp Features: All the tone-sweetening versatility bass players need in an MXR mini housing Combines the Echoplex Preamp with a three-band EQ and mid-frequency adjustment Punch up a solo, boost your live signal, or sculpt a more aggressive edge onto a passive sound https://www.prymaxe.com/collections/effects/products/mxr-m281-thump-bass-preamp?utm_campaign=privy_1156828&utm_medium=email&utm_source=privy&utm_email=%40%40%40%40070AObWOJvOCqJJIGcP295EqGkBKUc%2F4U%2BqkWWUw39MpmEXnzuZKXEuMHpUUbRzLLuJB00A0zquIjjo4tnhdWxhWGSaMSeQO4UTdzxCwOXxTB9jUH4a8wZk0LqEyvumOrxAMAx1zaKV5qtdmUlTEF3nd3uEFCgg9yyoF1jUTeqTZpXs%3D
  2. Thanks for taking the trouble to explain all that. I follow some, phase out at other bits, but seem to have my answer. I was thinking it was more variable in a controlled way.
  3. But T21 said its linked to the Mid controls. I realise the Mid sweep goes down to 40hz though.
  4. Ah yes, i understand that EQ settings will have a knock on effect with others, but im only talking about the preset freq that the HPF is set to, which T21 said moves. I understand the effectiveness of it will change, depending on what its fed, but surely the set freq doesn't change as such?
  5. I thought a HPF was something you set to a certain freq. In the manual it says its preset at 45hz. Sorry, i don’t understand why it would be designed to move in an uncontrollable way.
  6. I’m un following this thread now 😐
  7. Ive seen a few video reviews on this head, but this one is the first that has made me realise how small the head is. Either that or Dan has very large hands lol.
  8. Yeah, i thought that after I posted. Just clutching at straws lol.
  9. Haha, no worse than my posts. Ive tried using the Helix comps, and while i know loads love them I’m finding my Becos to really hit the spot at the moment. Hoping the new comp sim might change that so i can ditch a separate box.
  10. Well the Red box comp i linked to above has been out since 1978 apparently, so I’d class that as vintage, although not hard to get. We will have to wait and see.
  11. I asked this before, but never got a conclusive answer. I wonder if its the Pigtronix comp he used to use. Could be this as well http://whirlwindusa.com/catalog/black-boxes-effects-and-dis/effects/red-box-compressor
  12. Yeah, we know 😉 Shame the Stomp isnt getting the full set of meters.
  13. Just read his on TB. This was posted by Tech21. This is news to me. Did anyone else know about this? 'The HPF/LPF is based on the unit set flat. If you adjust the mids above or below the flat setting it changes the set point for the filters. Try not to get bogged down in numbers as it's a waste of time. Just use your ears and set to what "sounds" good. Much of it depends on the final destination of your sound. Amp, direct, powered monitor full PA system etc. Be judicious with EQ as they also change the phase of the signal.'
  14. That covers a lot of members on here then 😂
  15. Put waaaay better than i did. Thanks for that post.
  16. No, not using a comp (then, i am now, and have done over the years no and off). Never needed it in the past. Saying that, i did experiment with comps in the Helix at the time, but never really got on with them. Never use PA support. Tried a MB800, Quiter BB800, settled on a Fender Rumble 800D (which, being the most vintage proves your point). In fact im sticking with that head for now, pairs really well with my CN212.
  17. Let me know when you are playing at the pub in BG again and ill make more of an effort 🙂 The thing is, im not suggesting the cab is rubbish at all, quite the opposite, it sounds amazing. it just didn't work for me with the band, and i really do put that down to how i play and that i prefer a more coloured cab.
  18. No, although i do use a GKMB800. Thats another thing. I thought the tilt back idea was a good one, but as all my gigs rely on me producing the out front sound as well as on stage, pointing the cab at my ears was painful. The F112 is very clear at close quarters. My comments come from me listening at distance though, not close up. Close up everything was nice and punchy. Maybe a bit too clear, but i could hear every note and string noise. Walk out in the room and i felt a lot of that just disappeared/got covered up by the band. I couldnt really boost the top end as it was bright enough at my playing position.
  19. To be fair i found the cab lacking in mids on a solid floor as well. Ill file it with the BB2 in the 'just not my thing' category, and also put it down to my pick playing. Would you ever consider gigging it again (i believe its only had one?)at a gig were you weren't just using it as a stage monitor? Might give you more of an idea of what it can and cant achieve, and how the Fletcher–Munson curve effects it once its out of your basement. I do get that its a home cab only for you though.
  20. Yeah,. sorry if i wasn't clear. The point was i went back with the CN212 in Feb and barely touched the EQ on the amp (which as we know, are fixed freq's). Ive played that venue a few time over the years. Always had a bit of trouble with it, but the F112 was the worst. It was also lacking mid punch so a bit of a nightmare. Not the cabs fault, not really the venues fault, but the two just didn't work. Ive said it before but i found a similar issue at most of the venues i did with the F112. All wooden stages, so i had to get rid of it.
  21. Low end is not just one freq, could have been 93hz for all i know. My point was it really needs a notch filter and not just a HPF. I get what a HPF does, i have one (although didnt have it with me), plus do use one in the Helix when i use it, but cutting all the low end off want the ideal thing to do. Maybe i should have said 'in the low end' rather than a blanket 'low end'.
  22. Not really. There is noting to say the offending freq's are at the bottom of the range. A HPF wont help there. And no, before anyone mentions it, switching to IEMs mid gig is also not an option 😉
  23. Yes, that’s my point. Not until I started gigging it did I find it wasn’t quite as suitable as I had hoped. Not knocking the cab at all but for the clubs we play the low end was more problematic than I had experience with my other cabs.
