1. We microchip our dogs - should we microchip our bass guitars? I've got an iphone that is only worth #100 but I can locate it via software if it is lost or stolen. Why don't we feel the same about our instruments? if someone offered a cheap and easy way to 'mark' my bass I'd do it.
 2. I'd second Yamaha. They are as slim and light as the Ibanez and I feel they have the edge in build quality.
 3.
I run a training course on occasions, not done it for a couple of years, did it yesterday and I come to the Lost Profits Opportunity slide...I thought I really ought to reword that one!
Reminded me of the juxtaposition of fresh cucumbers at Tesco under the sign Perfect For Valentines!
 4. Bought a Yamaha bass guitar from Marvin. Pleasure to deal with. Good communications throughout.
 5. Also saw ASDA selling ISIS brand TVs before Christmas. Rock bottom price natch.
 6. Aye - a bit unfortunate. I often think back to the poor bugger that named the Aids slimming biscuit just as AIDS hit in the 80's. I'll wager he never recovered from that.
 7.
Drop Chris Mcintyre an email. He's a star. I've used chris for decades - in fact, I used to fly to London to get my instruments worked on when he was based there. He now has a workshop beside the Easter Road football stadium in Edinburgh. http://www.mcintyreg...rs-clients.html
Kevin Thanks for the steer. I've emailed Chris Mcintyre and will take if from there. I'll let you know how I get on. Cheers, David
 8.
Not to want to be a spolier of a good idea, but wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a neck? The down-side of this, of course is having to put up with a Fender-look-alike headstock - That alone would put me off too. Have a bump.
Hi Grangur Thanks for the bump. I love the neck on the Yamaha and would wish to keep it - for the same reasons mate! David
 9. Hi All I am going for a fretless conversion on a Yamaha 34" scale, i.e. completely replacing current fingerboard with a beautiful piece of unlined ebony, having markers at the top, that sort of thing. I was quoted £300 by Jimmy Egypt in Glasgow. I rate these guys, and am confident that they'd do a sterling job, but I want to test the marketplace and be sure I'm not paying over the odds. What can/should I expect to pay for a first rate job, and are there any other Luthiers in Scotland you would recommend for the work? Cheers, David
 10. I was looking in to that - but I may have to pay a restocking fee, and I might have just missed the boat on the final return date. You know, if I could afford to, I would keep the instrument purely as an example of an iconic design, a conversation piece, an objet d'art! But I have to pump the cash back into the old credit card I'm afraid.

 12. My sense of it is that adjustments cost an arm and a leg and that you are better off buying what you want rather than modifying what you have. Sell your current bass and buy what you want.

 14.
All bands have to start somewhere. A similar argument persists with e.g. aviation and the publishing world (both of which I have had experience of), in which the common whine is that new entrants are making it a 'race to the bottom' by undervaluing themselves. If you have a problem with others valuing themselves for less than yourself, you need to ensure you are properly differentiated to get the required attention. If these pubs want to pay peanuts they will get monkeys (as it were.) You can't directly attribute falling pub numbers to rubbish bands. There's a lot more to do with social drinking culture, the spread of cheap supermarket booze and a million channels of drivel to watch on TV to stop people having a good reason to go to the pub.
I'd go to the bar if it was live music - even if it was rubbish. Just to have a few beers and hear players do their thing is good enough. They get practice, exposure and experience - we get life, effort and passion ...... even if the skills and talent aren't there.

 17. Yep - I know the picture. I've got 2 kids myself and a 2 - 2.5 hour commute each day, but I find that having my gear set up and ready to play at all times means I can have a 10 - 20 minute noodle when the time allows, as opposed to fannying about making space, getting kit out and plugging in various bits'n'bobs. That and alcohol!
 18.
I just love that you have a whole wall veneered in birdseye maple
Yes - my wife calls it the library. She is fed up with me saying "Darling - I fear that Colonel Mustard has been done for with a candelabra in the library". I am renaming it the music room, or should that be music parlour?
 19.
Just bought the Geoff Chalmers 'Beginners Double Bass' course. At $79 I thought - why not? Especially considering what the instrument cost.
Loving the video course. Not too far into it, but I've learned lots already. You've got a mix of music theory, insider tips and practical exercises. I really feel I am taking a course as opposed to learning to play 'in a fairly mechanical sense' - if you get the distinction. Regards, David
 20. I'm thinking of Selina - kind of modern, classy, minimalist. Not bombastic, curvaceuous or full-bodied. My daughter hates the shape. She is convinced there are bits missing and it qualifies as "f'ugly" (apparently!). Thoughts? [sharedmedia=core:attachments:209693]
