Any comments welcome thanks[/quote] I have exactly this bass (but the four string version) - its fine for what it is, the neck is nice and the fretting is good. The tone shaping is okay. The pots needed a squirt of cleaner and then they were fine. The pickups are alright but a little quiet, my CIJ jazz is louder. The pickup is the only thing I [i]might[/i] change about it.

I bought it for the first time this month in a bid to make up my own mind. It was okay, Franc O Shea's column told me something I really didnt realise. However the review writers [i]badly [/i]need to use a spell checker. Question: they give away free strings with a subscription - are only .45's available? I use lights

The 60s bridge pickup is nearer the scratchplate (I have a CIJ 62 RI) than the 70s - judging visually against mine I'd guess there's maybe 15 mm in it

Good Luck David[/quote] Thanks - I figured out my original problem from reading some generic drum machine stuff in ed friedlands 'bass grooves' but I couldn't work out /how/ to save changes - you press the PLAY button bizarrely.! It just seems wierd that the metronome click happens at the start of a multibar pattern not the start of each bar!

It should spread the load a little and take pressure off the joint.

Hi, I just got one of these and I am confused about one aspect. The standard "number of beats" shown when programming is 8, even though I've set the quantize to whole notes/crotchets. The metronome clicks loud on beat 1 and not again on 5, suggesting each beat shown is an eighth note/quaver However it sounds, given the tempo, as if its counting out two bars and you, by default, program a two bar phrase for a pattern. can anyone advise?

I always think its best to move all of your finger joints a little to play a note than to over-extend one joint to do the whole thing. Equally I'm not sure that perpendicular sounds ideal anyway. I would recommend alternate heat and cold on your joints to calm them down (hot water bottle or wheatbag, then bag of icecubes, alternating). You may also want to try ibuprofen as this has an anti-inflammatory effect.

@am1 What worked for me was learning a scale down a single string, and also across/down the neck as high as I could get.

I suggest going Japan (CIJ) - nice balance of price versus quality. My 62 RI jazz is amazing.

I'm with you all on the hand size thing - mine arent huge. I have a Stingray clone, and a CIJ jazz. The jazz is easier/more comfortable to play by a mile.

I did read that Jamerson used them, and I have read in many books that its worth using them. Apparenbtly a small piece of futon mattress near the bridge works well.

I like my Fender CIJ Jazz 62 ri - it does everything I need.

I know the cast are currently touring 'unplugged' and I had heard they themselves could play. Didn't know saxon did some if the heavy lifting though

I was just watching the Spinal Tap movie, I notice that Derek Smalls is playing an MV Pedulla with a PJ configuration. I really like the bass tone he's getting though; does anyone know just by the sound, or through exceptional knowledge of the movie whats making it so ? I'm thinking of "Hellhole" particularly. There's usually a stack of Marshalls behind him, but that doesnt really mean anything in a movie!

thanks - the replacement body is a good solution, but I'd feel bad selling it as a 62 Ri if it had a replacement body. I guess my question would be better phrased as "would someone notice that a bass was (re)sprayed in polyester rather than cellulose" -here I am assuming that it was done in cellulose to start with. I dont mind too much as I want to keep it, but I dont like destroying the value of something.

You should. Mine went one better and actually bought ME one.

I have a cij 62 ri jazz from 1994 and it "has mojo". I guess its painted in cellulose. If it gets a competent respray, does it matter value-wise on resale if the paint used is polyester with poly varnish/laquer? Its a sunburst

Yes I have one. Its quite trebbly, lwtait remarked that it sounded almost like a rickenbacker. I have no idea why its so trebbly and its the only thing I dislike One thing I did do was put copper shielding tape (off ebay) in all cavities. Quietened it down nicely. Edit : mine is completely standard. They sound best imho with bridge on full and neck off full by about 10%
