1.
So I've had my bass for four months now. I took some lessons with a local tutor who showed me how to play some songs (& parts of songs) that I was interested in learning & he'd write them down in tab. After about seven lessons I realized that, while it was fun to play along, I was just copying & tried a more theory based tutor for one lesson - that was dry & no fun. Hal Leonard's 'Bass For Kids' (no laughing!) has helped me grasp reading bass clef (in very basic terms) & I've just started on HL's Bass Method book one - though it's a step up (expectedly) in difficulty. I feel more comfortable playing with a plectrum - maybe when I have reached a proficient standard I'll look at finger playing, but for now I don't want to over-complicate things. What should I also be doing -along with the HL books - if I want to progress on my bass journey?
I have total sympathy as I started again from scratch to eradicate bad habits. Kids books are fine especially if you're time challenged like me There is a place for learning songs and a place for learning theory but you should do both, in turns perhaps I agree about learning the fretboard or you'll be stuck in first position forever
2. I must be (almost) alone in not hating any bass player really. There are people that I think aren't really lighting my candle (eg Jaco/Wootten with all the widdling) but thats about as far as I get down that road. It doesnt matter if its demanding or not, if people like it then your work is done. If they get up and dance, its gold-star time. I spent three songs at an OM night playing root/(3rd)/fifth patterns as my regular partner had chosen some fifties/sixties songs that he liked (Cash, Berry, Elvis etc) and the crowd went totally mad for it. Thats why I play bass**, whats your reason ? Would they have liked it more if I had woven some intricate pattern of harmonics around the simple tunes? I suspect not. ** that and the fact that sunburst P basses look totally cool, in my humble opinion
3. I haven't bought a new or used instrument in a shop for years. I bought an Aria Magna 5 in Nottingham many years ago and that was the last one. They just just don't feel right unless I built or commissioned it. My Bass Doc P is the right one, shiny instrument syndrome doesnt happen for me. .
4.
I haven't met Mr Clayton but I saw him coming down an escalator at Earl's Court one time. As he descended he seemed to be staring blankly into the upper middle distance which I suppose some might interpret as being 'aloof'. OTOH it's entirely possible that Mr Clayton suffers from very poor eyesight and his optician isn't up to the job. Lovely frames, shonky lenses, mayhap?
He does actually I do wish I had half as much talent - or time to develop it anyway
5.
It will be fine, 9v dc is 9v dc the world over
Just saying beware of offers of free ac adaptors
6.
I'm in the same boat but I won't be buying a guitar/bass as I've got enough (and if I did it would be a guitar as they are FAR smaller). I will also be loving the theme parks, which is probably pretty sad, but honestly, our attempt at theme parks in this country are pretty shoddy compared to Harry Potter at Universal. But, I MAY get a few effects pedals. Some of them are much cheaper over there. Does anyone know if Boss pedals work ok from the US when brought here? I want one of the new CE-2W's which are currently rising in price a fair bit here.
Yes, but obviously you need a different Ac adaptor
7.
Go through the "goods to declare" channel and pay the VAT and duties if applicable. There's a good chance that you'll just get waved through anyway and told not to waste the customs time (although don'y count on it). Also remember that if you're buying in the US for export you shouldn't have to pay US sales tax on your purchase.
Take your return ticket with you to the store
8. ive tried one courtesy of flateric - interesting curio, but I wouldnt want to play one for long
9.
Larry Knechtel was one of the Doors' secret bass players, at least on some of their most significant recordings. There were others who subsequently played on other albums... 10. It's like "one lady owner" on a car sale, it kind of depends- you can't realistically have any expectations about what actual state it will be in, neglected or fine, gigged but battered or gigged but cared for and perfectly setup
11.
Is an ungigged reliced bass more desirable?
Oh yes
12. Could mean a good hoovering out and a squirt of cleaner in the pots/jacks
13. Bob Babbitt specifically stated that the "mock contracts" were often wrong, and often didnt reflect whose take was actually used. He recalled arguing with Jamerson in a bar when a song they'd both recorded a part for came on, about which of them was actually playing the final version. The residuals were based on the contracts and so they are only a guide at best. I'd prefer to go with the actual living memory of people who were physically there (where more than one is saying the same thing as Ck seems a bit inconsistent at best), and it seems a little unfair to lay claim to a whole canon of work when your protagonists are both dead Since CK is a pick player, and Jamerson and Babbitt both used fingers, it should be fairly easy to tell their styles apart ?
14.
Yes but do they know how to work with wood.
I agree, it's a different animal to smooth. Metal and plastic
15. I agree with Chris ; it just didn't work for me, it sounded a bit weedy I'm selling a p plate with an extra hole if you do try it?
16. Ok - how many actual strings ? It's hard to judge value
17. Jameson was drinking heavily in California and Bob Babbitt says no one really knew whose take had been used even then as the contracts for each track were often wrong - I can't see how forty years would add clarity
18. Find a vinyl pattern you like and smooth it into the existing plate using a credit card or somesuch
