but to me learning the notes on the neck should come first ,
Learning the notes is something that can easily be learnt at home with little need for guidance or explanation. IMO spending 1 session or more learning notes would be a waste of valuable tutoring time, and mind-numbingly boring for those in the group that have put a modicum of effort before going down the lessons route. As has been said, saying the notes to yourself while playing these scales is very helpful.
It must be liberating to be at a stage in your career where you can churn out music like that because you want to. No pressure from the record company.
My knowledge of Bowie is far from exhaustive, but I have assumed that throughout his entire career he's pretty much done what he wants to... ...perhaps with the exception of The Laughing Gnome.

A track really can't be judged on one listen. As we all know, it's often the "growers" that stay with us. So while I'm not sure if I'm going to like it... I have to take my hat off to him for not playing it safe - Respect!

What bass his he playing.? this will suprise you.

"Red light syndrome" basically, the pressure gets to you! What may be as simple as p*** to play at home becomes the hardest thing to get right when you feel you're under such intense scrutiny. It's not uncommon and should ease with experience.

I think we're talking about 2 slightly different things here: 1. Sitting down at your old 33rpm turntable (I'm old) and trying to figure out a part by repeatedly playing that part of the record - effectively, trial & error! 2. The ability to hear a tune, bass part, or whatever, and play it straight off without having to figure it out first. The first, we all do, or have done. The second is an acquired skill that many musicians haven't acquired. Seems the OP is well on his way to achieving the second

Great stuff! It's easy (for some) to forget how innovative this stuff was.

As a charity record, appealing to as wide a market as possible, therefore raising the most cash possible, then it's absolutely fine. As a piece of music, to be judged as such, the phrase, "Square pegs, round hole" springs to mind.

Well, if you're going to cover one of the most perfect pop songs ever recorded, there's high probability that flack will come your way. That said... I've heard worse!

Do the big name acts make cock-ups like us mortals?
SteveK replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
I could be wrong, but I can imagine Eagles fans pay to hear the songs as they are recorded and would be put out if this were not the case...
You may well be right, and I'm prepared to accept that I may be in the minority... But, I have a personal dislike of being hoodwinked - I don't like being sold (if I were a ticket buying punter) something that it is not, and the word "integrity" comes to mind. -

Nothing wrong with mistakes! In fact, I long for the "good ol' days" when you could hear a guitarist not quite making the phrase, or a vocalist not quite hitting the note, the odd dodgy drum fill... that's what made music exciting - the feeling that you were getting a performance... something unique! Played with The Eagles earlier this year - I was looking forward to seeing and hearing the legends. They came on stage and sounded awesome, guitars, voices, the whole thing sounded perfect... in fact, a little too perfect! Later in the evening I was told by "someone in the know" virtually all the show was "playback"!.. very sad! Just to carry on with the name dropping: We played on the bill with The Who in Vienna a few years ago... they totally cocked up My Generation -
If that was with Hazel O'Connor I had that LP, a talented lady IMHO
Indeed, it was!
I've just remembered that I had an interesting brief email exchange with Tony Visconti. However, it was about his production work, not his bass playing.
Spent a few weeks recording an album with Tony Visconti in 1981. What that man doesn't know about producing records aint worth knowing, a man that knows how to get the best from a musician. As in all walks of life... you get the good guys, and then you get the ar****les
I totally get the whole feel thing... problem is everyone has their own
Which is one of the reasons some rhythm sections work better than others.

Just someone entering in to the spirit of the occasion! I would've thought, having someone shout "w***er" at (pseudo) Mr Sting throughout the evening just adds to the authenticity of the event. Maybe now's the right time to go solo, hook up with a few fusion heavyweights and record the multi-platinum album.
should I do these remaining gigs. I think I should
Yes, you should... or, at least till they've found a replacement - IMO the band have done nothing wrong - you've effectively quit - you should give them reasonable notice - end of the year is fair.

Anyone who's interested, here's the isolated bass track
Well, that is an opinion.. I'd say neither of them would have gotten a gig anywhere else..
You little scamp! I don't think you really believe that, do you?
But should he have told me?
Maybe, or maybe not - they know better than anyone here how you might have reacted having been told. Had they told you, you may well have again thrown your "toys out of the pram" and left them in the the lurch. They're understandably covering their backs. You're not interested anyway, so what's the problem?
-
Yep, me too!

Played with (and consequently, seen) Toto many times over the years, and become "on the road" buddies... don't recall hearing them do this one live though - great stuff! Good to see Mike Porcaro.
Steve, you posted just before I did, that looks good, I don't have phono in to the amp, just left and right minijacks....
Yes, sorry, without phono amp inputs, the box I linked to wouldn't be of any use.

The Who... in all their glorious, scrappy, untogetherness - Great stuff! Their scrappy untogetherness added to the excitement and magic of The Who... If you or I, or most any other musician were as scrappy, by design or accident, it would sound... well... crap! Funny ol' thing... music!

It was the COMBINATION of Townshend, Daltrey, Entwistle and Moon that made The Who one of the greatest, most exciting rock bands ever. Entwistle and Moon's contribution in terms of sheer musical abandonment was invaluable and is irreplaceable. Nobody else, however great the musicianship, would be right for The Who. Thought Be Lucky was ok though... while it was obviously Townshend and Daltrey, it kind of reminded me of XTC
