Not quite sure how that statement relates. Choosing different things is down to them being different, not because there isn't a difference.
Well go and have a beer and a sit down, and think about how my POD X3 is different to your 37 vintage valve amps and 22 speaker cabs, and what both of us are trying to achieve in terms of sound, character, indulgence, passion, image, flexibility, reliability, transportability, cost ..
Or are using it.
But that was their CHOICE to use it over other means of producing the sounds they like and need. It doesn't matter as long as the end result is acceptable to the user.
It can't quite work like that in terms of dealing with an analogue signal. If it were that straight forward, then the signal at the speaker would only ever be two levels. 0v or (for example) 10v to truly denote an output of 0 or 1 in the digital domain. The speaker would be either at it's resting point, or being pushed out in one direction statically, nothing in between. A digital amplifier would be more common place in a control system, such as one driving a stepper motor for example. It's output only ever needing to be fully on or fully off, possibly using some sort of mark-space ratio to control movement. Coming back to the audio amplifier, unless it involves some sort of DSP circuit, such as the preamplifier in the TC RH450, there is no analogue to digital conversion and thus the signal stays in the analogue domain. Effects units, such as those by Line 6 are digital as they rely wholly on A/D, DSP and D/A conversion. It's pretty safe to call them digital.
But still no-one can tell the difference between those and analogue

This thread is a f***ing disgrace, a total embarassment to Basschat. I'm disgusted and wondering why I have so much respect for you people. No-one's mentioned Guiggsy yet

This album is giving me proper shivers! There are some marvellous moments on it! It's weird, listening to S&A I can barely remain conscious, I wonder why that is.
I love any kind of feedback. The praise makes you feel good and any constructive criticism is useful. I love talking to people after a gig.
Me too

I only really know what to say when someone goes "is your guitar (sic[k]) made of metal mate?" or "Why you wear dem gay glove blud?". But I had a few people say they loved the bass and drums at the last London Zulu gig, I just say thanks, that's really nice, or really glad you enjoyed it, etc. I love a nice compliment if I feel I am deserving of one, but I have to quite strongly resist the urge to reply with something self-deprecating. I find compliments very humbling, definitely back-foots me if I don't know the person. Whereas at the same gig, when two BC members there said they liked it, I just asked if the bass sounded ok as if that was all I cared about Mad innit, I think it's called being British
Ha.. I think it's a hideous, unfocussed, wobbly mess. Diffr'ent strokes..!
Quintessential Alex for me, I adore it when he plays like that, sublime Like the solos on Available Light and Ghost of a Chance, although they are a little more restrained and sticking to a more melodic theme. You know what, I'm realising how little patience I have for music these days, I seem to be like a modern f***ing teenager I need to let let music grow on me more, I'm really starting to get into this album the more I force myself to listen to it actively.
-
Yeah, I'm coming around to it too. I like it, production aside. One bit drives me nuts though: 4:20-ish on The Garden, when Alex comes in with that gorgeous, soaring, twangy line - possibly the loveliest moment on the record. Does he sit on it for a while, play it a few times around and let it breathe? No. He plays it once, and disappears off into a wayward solo. What's the hurry, man? If it had been me producing it, I would have chopped his bliddy fingers off.
It's all too much to take in at the moment so I have just had another listen to TG and decided you are a bloody nutcase It's a gorgeous solo! Wonderfully played with gorgeous phrasing! although I'd agree that he might hav left a little space before the second phrase. And what a guitar tone!!

I LOVE the title track! The vocal melody is lovely and just the sort of thing that that makes me realise that I don't really care about music with crap vocal melodies with unsupportive harmony, however good the music is. Some of the other tracks lack nice vocal melodies and I can't get into them as much, but Carnies, Caravan, BU2B and the Anarchist are standing out to me at the moment. I think RUSH are enjoying themselves again, I really do. They've restored my faith EDIT: Oh, and Alex's solo in Caravan blows my f***ing mind!! It's got that weird sh*t where you can't quite work out the scalar tonality sort of major over minor, like the Tom Sawyer solo, but it perfectly compliments the music. Really exciting!
Looking at the above pic - the stickers have been supplied correct but the last 4 have just been stuck in the wrong place on the fretboard. Wrong - 15-XV 17-XXIV 19-XVII 21-XIX 24-XXI Right - 15-XV 17-XVII 19-XIX 21-XXI 24-XXIV Am I missing something? Or more likely repeating the obvious? CB
The widths and heights of the panels did not correspond with the numerals. -
It's heeeereeee..... Lovely package. I hope the record lives up to it...
Mine too! I've listened to two thirds of it. It's good! I'm enjoying it! So much better than S&A. The title track is the highlight for me so far.
A lot of the the time a groove can be really improved/changed by paying careful attention to the length of the note that you play. Its amazing how effective this can be and its not often talked about - least on here anyway. Try playing the same line but varying the length of the notes in certain parts and get ready to be amazed at how much of a difference this can make. This is one of many ways (and an easy one) to improve your connection to the rhythm.
Bang on, really important. I rarely see discussions about expression and expression techniques.
There's a bass only track of Love Spreads on YouTube, and a B-Side called Breakout which is just Breaking Into Heaven without the guitar too. They should help you get your head round it a bit.
I could hear those (the OPs get blocked as my internet connection goes via bloody Germany). Interesting, he's playing a lot of off-beat accents, a bit like I was saying in my previous post, it does indeed bounce
-
Done, good luck man!
-
I agree with your last sentence Edward, but I will NEVER agree that the bass has to play on the kick drum. The bass can do ANYTHING as long as the band agree it's musical and achieving the songwriter's vision. As for the OP's question about 'bounce' and 'groove', it depends how you define those terms. I can't hear the vids as I'm at work, but look at syncopation with the drums, play with space and accents. If the drummer is good, this should not be difficult, but the drummer has to be solid and tasteful. Try this, get the drums to do a very simple uptempo 4/4 boom tish boom tish type thing, then play a melodic bass line with notes only on the off-beats. That should bounce, and have groove. And you will be nowhere near the kick or snare either.
