I can't believe this still hasn't gone! If you watch the youtube videos of someone comparing a P bass copy to a Fender one you always know which is which. Fender Precision tone is incredibly distinctive, simple bass or I dont think you can imitate it 100%. I've never tried a high end version though, not a lot to improve now fender have upped the quality since 2008.
Cheers dude!
Im starting to make inroads into my 40s now and the old Trace stuff is doing me in. I am looking for a lightweight amp and a 4x10 cab. I play in a function band playing usual functiony type stuff (bit of everything) and a blues rock band which requires more dynamic/loud playing. Suggestions and recommendations would be welcomed. I will be buying from Darren at Bass Merchant as he is top bod and only 20 mins up the road from me. Budget approx £1200k Thankyou.
Agreed, Darren is a top chap! Markbass Little Mark 3? 4x10 wise...hmmm. Even the neo 4x10s are stilly fairly heavy. Have you though about two manageable 1x12s? They pack a wallop, if you get something high end like Aguilar GS or DB.

Spent too much, but nowhere near as much as my friends who are car fanatics.

Fender make the best original style Jazz basses for the price. If you want something more modern and a little different, Id try Sandberg. Never got on with the Lakland QC issue....gave up trying to buy one. They can be VERY heavy.

I think some people associate a decent amount of bass with 'boom', eg those who like squeaky clean tight bass guitar tones. The BT is one hugely powerful and awesome amp. I dont own one but I tested it. Fantastic amp, and great dirt if you want it.
-
That HB combo looks alright, but the amp itself looks super super cheap/tacky. But you get what you pay for. I bet its great as a backup.

RS210 - nice treble extension, tight bass, very good price, and good resale value.

Worst names for musical equipment

Cheesiest and shittest name for a bass cabinet: Genz Benz 'Uber' bass cabs. Probably sound great, and they look great! Genz do seem to be stuck in a rut with their actual aesthetics. I reckon if they got a designer in, to do it more slick, they could sell a lot more. Basically, make the new Shuttle look like an Apple product (eg slick and/or white). -
Nice setup! Im looking forward to seeing these in the flesh and trying one out.
22 fret neck, with a thinner profile, rather than a Stingray's 21 fret thicker neck. Smaller body, of course. A ceramic magnet pickup, rather than the Stingray's alnico magnet pickup.
This is it. Sound wise? Sterling's sound more modern/hi fi. Stingray all the way for me!
I made a rather rash and impulsive purchase a couple of days ago; I was in a shop in Leeds trying out different basses, and after playing many Fenders, Sandbergs and an Ibanez ATK I picked up a Stingray. I've never played one before (I did have a cheap copy as my first bass, but that was terrible) and I was blown away by the feel, sound, articulation, build quality and, most of all, the range of tones available from that one pickup! It can be tight and snappy or warm and loose, simply depending on where you place your right hand, but it always maintains that incredible growl. Then add in the EQ and there's such a massive range of tones there. Also, the neck is quite fat, but so comfortable and fast - it just fills the hand beautifully. I hadn't planned on buying a bass that day... but well, it had to be done. I tried out 5 of them, including a five string, and a Sterling (which I didn't really like the feel of - the body was too small for me), and I picked my favourite. After thinking that they were overpriced (as they look quite a 'simple' bass when compared with others in their price range), I am now a complete convert! Anyway, sorry about the terrible iphone photo - a friend has my camera at the moment.
I now have the 2EQ version of this bass on its way, albeit it with the normal natural headstock. I love this colour on a Ray....great quality.
I think i now have the best rig. End thread. It sounds AWESOME.
Lol, does the amp weigh twice as much as the cab?! Nice.

On a positive note, Ive recently realised despite what people might think about the forums here or in the US, EBMM know how to make a high quality, US built instrument. I compared the EBMMs to a few other manufacturers the other day, and the cheapest bass, the 2 band Ray, was actually the highest quality and lightest weight. Even more so than the Sadowsky Metro I tried! Shock horror.

Stingray Choice - 2EQ, 3EQ, or Classic (again!)
What colour did you go for?
I didn't want the cheaper black/red/blue ones, plus I wanted the proper case with it. Highly padded bags are great but I don't use them for storing my basses, just for rehearsals when car space is low. So, I've got what I've always wanted. a Stingray 2EQ in Vintage Sunburst with black plate and rosewood board. EBMM sunbursts and natural finishes are quite expensive but after seeing a sunburst the other day, it HAD to be mine I'll have a comparison video on my to do list now. -

Hmm I seem to be finding that the 2EQ models I want are actually MORE expensive than some of the 3EQs, and the 3EQs have cases. Im not talking about the offer basses at £999 here. Im actually trying to stay away from black even though a Ray looks great in black. I bet ill end up with 2 3EQs! -
are you getting one of the special offer black/rosewood 2EQs or paying more for a vintage sunburst with case? btw, just seen this and thought of you and the whole white/tort thing http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...L_SB2White.html seriously you need to try an SB-2 someday if you haven't already. This time last year I had a USA SB-2, an MIA 08 blizzard pearl Precision Std and a MIM classic 60s white/tort Jazz all at the same time. The G&L was better than both the Fenders at their respective sounds imo and even though the fenders were both great basses I got shot of both of them and didnt miss them at all (the SB-2 had been factory modded with a tone control). Then this year I inexplicably sold the SB-2 which was the dumbest bass sale I ever made. I'd seriously love another and the blue Tribute SB-2 that has just come up FS on here has given me the first bout of serious GAS in ages
I'm hoping for a quote on the burst but if it's too much I'll be getting a black/rosewood. That SB2 is lovely but I'd need that tone control, -

Going for a 2EQ once a quote has come through. -
Where was i when all this was going on lol. I had considered this exact model as a replacement for my MIA but even though the nut is not as wide as my Ray34 i still think its too much of a gamble. Good luck with whatever you end up doing.
Hhaha. I went through a bit of a possible change about with basses last week. After playing this again this weekend, Im very tempted to keep it. I cant decide so ill just leave it for sale and see what happens.

Looks good, I miss that cab. Contemplating getting another!
-
With mine, Ive recently had it set flat. Maybe roll back the treble a little, and take the horn off the cab completely.

Talk to me about the modern Rickenbacker 4003...
Oh dear thats what I thought you would say once you tried one! EBS_freak had a loan of one (1978 firglo, Gorgeous!)both of us tried gigging with it but I cant imagine anyone from the Fender/MM camp getting used to it,Sure I have a good rig and is anyone going to suggest EBS_freaks rig is below standard here? but why should you have to rely on the rig for a great sound? Flat, weak and lifeless (Is that a hair product advert?).It had a ridge all the way down either side of the neck where they appear to of made the fretboard too wide for the neck and slapped it on anyway,No good for slapping ,No good for muted swing style,Bits of metal in the way everywhere,Sticks in your arm even more than a slab body pre EBMM as the edges are sharp rather than rounded like my pre.Looks brilliant and if money was no object I would of bought it anyway as the price was quite good too but certainley not for me im affraid and for someone like you that has had objections to QC and limitations of instruments before I think it was a none starter.
Too true. I noticed poor fret work as soon as I picked it up. That metal pickup cover looks great, but stops you enjoying the instrument.
