  1. Agree the FI is a faff - that's its one downside. I would love to agree that the Stomp can provide usable synth sounds with great tracking when playing quickly, which is one of the key tests for 'live usability' in my book. But that's certainly not been my experience. If it did, believe me it would save me spending a tidy sum on an incoming Boss SY-1; this appears to have great tracking but also avoids the 'faff' element of the FI. Although for those of us who are into our synth pedals, the FI retains its crown as arguably still the very best synth pedal for bass in terms of the quality of the sounds it can deliver. Really happy to be proved wrong on this by a fellow BC'er - I look forward to hearing some decent HX Stomp synth lines on this filter and synth samples thread (there are currently NO HX Stomp synth lines posted, which maybe says something?):
  2. 40 lbs vs 21 lbs for the two models you have shown. And appearances can be deceptive: the SC takes up approx just 60% of the space of the ST. A 212 is going to beat a 112 for overall "sound". No question. The SC is pretty much as a close to a 'half ST' as any cab can be IMO (but @FinnDave can now actually confirm that rather take my word for it!) So boils down to: more sound with similar voicing or lighter weight? Pays your money and takes your choice! Or in the OP's case, just pay more money and get both... 😁
  3. Except for the small point that the ST is almost DOUBLE the weight of the SC. Will be a consideration for some.
  4. I think you may have seen my pic of a Fearless F112 (now there's an awesome cab! ) and SC side by side? You're correct there isn't much difference in overall size between the two, however the Fearless is 50% heavier at circa 33 lbs vs a featherweight 21 lbs for the SC with cloth grille. Be good to get a side by side shot of the SC and ST anyway for future ref. @FinnDave could you oblige for us?
  5. I know you're kinda thinking that this has resulted in more gear rather reducing the amount of space taken up at home, which was an initial factor for you. But I wouldn't be massively surprised if you found that your SC did the job just fine, in which case you'll be able to move your ST on and you'll have ticked all your boxes at that point
  6. Thanks gents. Actually the Gruv Gear Duo was kinda where I was landing too so I'll drop @fretmeister a pm. My research so far: D'Addario Planet Waves 50DARE000 (£16 from GAK) Slinger Straps Double Shoulder Strap (£60? - not currently available in the UK) Gruv Gear Duo Neo (£70 G4M) Neotech 2501522 Harness (£97 Amazon) Richter Hydra (£240 - Thomann)
  7. Somehow completely missed this! What is it about the 425 that makes us get sellers regret as soon we have let the thing go? Have to confess exactly the same happened to me with my first BB 425, which is now being put to good use by @moley6knipe and my second which is being put to equally good use by @dave_bass5! I've managed to avoid getting a third 425 so far... Pic?? Hmmm, you're not the first to comment on the 614/5 preamp being a bit meh (and an earlier post about 40 pages back(!) commented on how an Aggie OBP3 replacement transformed the bass). I'm guessing that Yammy must have upgraded the pre a fair bit with the successor 734A/5A model, as folk seem to be generally very happy indeed with the 3 series successor to the 614/5s. How did it feel to get off the "I'm not getting any more gear" wagon? Did you find a deep sense of relief and happiness, and colour returning to your pale and placid flesh? 😁
  8. And you were going to share this with us on your thread exactly when? 😂 IMO BF SC + decent D class head = almost unbeatable in terms of portability for a high quality rig that can deliver up to 500W (at 8 ohms).
  9. Do you remember where from? Gave my SLC-5 a spin tonight with the band at rehearsal. Played with amp set clean and relatively flat with no pedals so I could hear how the unvarnished bass sounded in the mix. Used the studio cab which does not have the clarity of my BF or Fearless and consequently found that I was leaning to the bridge pup to cut through (which it did!). Be interesting to see how using a better cab and a fresher set of strings impacts on pup selection.
  10. That does look nice Si! I've never really gone for orange before other than with this relic of a gadget that is still lurking in my drawer and is probably the same age as your 415! However orange does seem to work really well on Yammy BBs for some reason, and I can see why @AndyTravis is such a fan of them in that finish. Do you have / have had other Yammy BBs? Btw - does that mean you are officially now no longer trying to avoid any gear purchases in 2019? 😂
  11. @WHUFC BASS - thanks for that. Very helpful. Interesting you say that about the Rotosounds. I was surprised to find that the strings on mine were < 4 months old, I had assumed they were a fair bit older; but that certainly ties in with your comment about short shelf life. Good that D'Addarios get your vote of confidence for use on Spectors as that is likely what I will be swapping to.
  12. Lovely, and sounds like an amazingly versatile tonal palette. But far too much use of soft drinks for one bass 😁 PS and you, do of course, mean cocobolo which provides such a gorgeous top to any bass.
  13. Thinking that this would be a sensible way forward to deal with the slightly heavier basses in my herd. Anyone using one - how are you finding it? Be keen to hear from you and get your recommendations. Cheers, AK
  14. I've been informed that mine are Rotosound Swing Bass RS665LD by the seller, which are steel rather than nickel and don't have silk at the bridge end like yours.
  15. Spector Strings Mine have been strung with Rotosound Swing Bass RS665LD steels which I think are 45-130 which are 4 months or so old. Might just swap over my D'Addario EXL 170-5 (45 - 130) nickels from my Yammy P35 when I get that restrung with flats. I'd also be interested to hear what Spector are using as standard? Have you got a preferred set of strings for your Spectors? Thanks for the tip-off of about the Crimson Restorative btw - whereabouts are you sourcing yours? Ditto re slight tweak on the truss rod, in my case to see if I can get a flatter neck and thereby further lower the action. But I suspect that can wait and I can sort at the same time as applying a bit of Crimson and swapping the strings over!
  16. @hiram.k.hackenbacker - just wow! Absolutely stunning!
  17. Right OP, enough from me hijacking your thread! Tell us a bit more about how you are getting on with yours?!
  18. Just re-read my OP on this thread: oh how optimistic I was about my self-control back in those days! 🤣 Kinda amusing that I thought I would have the self control to only get one 5er; I've just recently got my collection up to six having moved another four on along the way
  19. I suspect it will be informative / interesting / useful to hear what you felt was 'missing' for you with your Status and Sei? I did try a headless Status recently with a view to buying, but having driven for nearly two hours to get there it wasn't for me...maybe it was the amp and cab, or that particular bass & pups; but despite having a 4 band EQ I just found it lacking in tonal sweep. Such a shame - it was a stunning looking bass! And I know plenty of folk do love their Statii.
  20. Sounds like (i) you have impeccable taste and (ii) are in for a treat
  21. Spent a pleasant couple of hours getting my SLC-5 set up tonight - previous owner liked his action set quite high, particularly on the E and B strings so I lowered these and also managed to sort the intonation. Back of my mind and my biggest concern was your earlier comment about the sound being weak on your NS2000 and this putting you off Spectors for a while. I mentioned yesterday my first impression that the neck pup has a fulsome low end and generally good output; the neck pup, on the other hand, was definitely a bit 'thinner' when I tried the bass out last night but pretty easily sorted this evening by my raising the bridge pup height to be closer to the strings. End result: great to have the more aggressive bridge pup now punching its weight! Just spotted that Mrs Krow has finished watching an episode of Poldark on iPlayer, so my turn to ditch the headphones and crank the noise up! 😀 Update: since spent a good hour working through material for the weekend gig. Initial sense that this was going be tonally versatile, which is something I really appreciate in my basses, has already been totally borne out. It has a tonal range that goes from neck pup solo'd with treble rolled off for Motown, via a smooth, sweeter, slightly mid-cut with both pups engaged for sitting comfortable in the mix, through to a raunchy bridge pup to cut through the mix for modern rock that can be made even more aggressive (should you ever want!) with a touch of mid-boost. And it's a pleasure to play with a very comfortable neck. Although it's only a little heavier than my Yammys, my shoulder was definitely feeling it by the end of the session! I think I'm going to need to invest in a double shoulder strap - any of you guys got one that you're using you can recommend? If that deals with the slightly heavier weight, this bass is likely to be a keeper that I'm sure I'm going to want to regularly gig.
  22. I've never played a Bogart, but they do look good and seem to have got themselves quite a following. If you're preferring the Bogart ahead of your Pedulla then that is saying quite a lot, right?! Would you say Bogarts were in direct competition to Status?

Catch up with bass, without wife? 😀 Glad the clean patch proved useful.
  24. This thread was very helpful to me when I was first looking to get a 5 string nearly 3 years back, and didn't know my 'benchmark' Fender from the back of my Yammy. I now pretty much only play 5'ers! There have been a bunch of new and excellent 5 string basses released in the past couple of years so, in case there are fellow BC'ers who are looking for a steer on getting a 5'er, I thought it might be timely to ask folk to share thoughts on their current 5 string bass favourites to bring this thread up to date. @Dad3353 has kindly 'refreshed' the thread for us so that our earlier posts are easily read - many thanks for doing that!
  25. Tbf I've been thinking about getting a Spector for a while - they have a great reputation and, with their neck through, elegant body plus 24 easily accessible frets, head turning good looks. But I've struggled to find a neck through 5er with a 3 band EQ, so when you spoke glowingly about the Spector Legend Custom model, which I'd not come across before and which ticked both those boxes, and I recalled seeing one in the FS in vgc for a reasonable price, combined with you freeing up a space on my bass rack, the stars clearly were aligned! So entirely your fault? Possibly not. Major culprit? Yup! 😂 In terms of a London BCers curry with beers - great idea! I think you sound like the man to make that happen!
