1. Is there a musical term that covers an instance where a guitarist just holds down the main riff while the bass does something else in another key? Question in point - go here Video after you've read this (2nd video down). We were jamming on Tuesday, just before we were due to leave, guitarist starts a riff which alludes to have a root of G - I start playing a descending loop of EDC and it sounds nice. We put it down on video so we can remember it. I'm struggling to find a musical term that covers this expression. Anyone? Cheers P
2. My memory a little sketchy...Sixx threw a black Spector T-Bird and destroyed a Gibson one. If you're interested click here or search on the Moscow Peace Festival. He's using the 'good' Spector for most of the gig and changes to the aforementioned black one just before they start smashing things up. http://youtube.com/watch?v=N-7Zwy9KEII&feature=related I can't advocate the destroying of gear, but it's quite entertaining (and a bit shocking) in it's own way. Especially the Gibson. Thump! ...and I thought Thunderbirds had issues with weakness around the headstock. P
3.
O and a m8 of my dads has got a spector like that! Hes a member on here somewhere!
Spector make a Rex model bass - it's a bit like a T-bird but the bottom cutaway is scooped out a bit more - it's likely to be one of these as the Nikki Sixx models were custom builds...not many about and he destroyed two on live TV in Moscow the S.O.B.. Cetera has a nice Fernandez copy of the Spector Thunderbird that Nikki Sixx used during the early nineties - the body is just flipped 180 degrees. Ishibashi had one for sale for under £100 recently. P
4. I know it's probably not what you want, but visit the Waterstone Guitars site - I have a twelve string TP12 that looks just the same as the blue bass pictured - they also make a four and eight as well. P
5. I love the way Thunderbirds look with a Spector neck/headstock. On my PC I also have a great shot of a very old Jazz with a pair of Musicman pickups and what I believe is a BadAss II bridge. I guess that with a bound rosewood board w/block inlays would be kinda peachy. P
6. I got all interested in the new ATKs, but feel they need to put out a five-string in something other than a natural finish. Now a black one, with a black scratchplate and a rosewood/ebony board would look very saucy. P
7.
I have a Cutlass 1, its a lovely sounding bass apart from the well documented neck issues. Best Cutlass to get is probably an early one, before Geoff Gould took his eye off the ball as far as production quality went. But you'll probably have to fight me for it. . Clips and pics here: http://www.freewebs.com/crazykiwi_bass/musicmancutlass.htm Compare with my 78 stingray here: http://www.freewebs.com/crazykiwi_bass/musicmanstingray.htm
Cheers for the links to your pages. Interesting your quotes about the neck being like a banana! Sounds like my first Streamer! P
8. I just read an article in Bass Player (US) about the Musicman Cutlass 1 bass, which was produced in limited quantities until 1984. Stingray body, (Modulus?) graphite neck. Anyone had any experience of these? P
9. The first gig I ever did (at a house in Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey...ooh, maybe 1978) was attended by Gerry Cott (Boomtown Rats) and locals boys Steve Lillywhite (well, we all know who he is) and his brother Adrian (who drummed with The Members and King). Steve Lillywhite said we 'were great and if we wanted some help in the studio [we] knew where to find him.' P
10. OK, listen up. My band 'Last Three Standing' are playing at The Cellar Bar, South Hill Park Arts Centre, Bracknell on Sunday (yes, I know, Sunday) 27th January 2008. More details (plus six tracks of delicious audio) are available from our website. Cheers P
11. The only reason I was drawn to SIT strings was that I read some good reviews from the perspective of restringing my Waterstone. To be honest, the lack of choice has been a nightmare! I was amazed at the reaction of the guy who I spoke to at the UK distributor. I've still got the same octaves on as were on it when it was delivered, but I've swapped out the bass strings to a set of my preferred D'Addarios. P
12. Anyone used SIT (Stay In Tune) strings? I spoke to the UK distributor (who seemed to be operating from a private residence and seemed quite surprised someone was actually calling him about the product) - he said there 'wasn't much call for the strings over here'. I'm specifically looking to restring my Waterstone 12-String. P
13. Damn damn damn damn damn. Why now? <shakes head> I've got a '79 Precision and a Waterstone 12 and want to hang onto these (the Precision will go into retirement when I get the DJ5). If it was April or May (by which time I'll be mortgage free), I'd have bitten your hand off for this. I will be seriously flush and looking to buy! First choice was black w/rosewood board, but WTF, I'd take a blue or white one if it came down to it.# Lovely bass. P
14. I've got a huge pile of monthlies that need moving on, or they'll go into the recycling. I stopped subscribing to a bunch of periodicals and need to move them on before they get pulped. They're presently just taking up space in my garage. Shame. I'm in Crowthorne, Berkshire - east of Reading (fifteen minutes on a good day), near Bracknell/Ascot. These include: 130+ Q magazines - from #10 or 11, up to whatever issue came out last May/June, plus some supplements (no CDs). T3 tech/toys mag from issue 1 to mid-2007. Premiere (UK film magazine) - entire print run from start to finish, plus a bunch of old US editions. I know there's some UK Bassist Mags in there somewhere too...I bought all of the original run when they came out, but haven't seen them in the six years since we moved. These are all packed in [photocopying paper] boxes with lids...all clean. Cheers P
15.
Were they doing it really fast, up and down the pavement in all manner of styles with the finesse of a couple of porn stars?
You want some more details? You're not getting excited are you?
16.
I applaud the initiative (and I'm not trying to urinate on your bonfire) but I think you may well struggle to find 20-25 people on this forum prepared to agree to the same spec for a Ltd Ed bass! I'm just trying to keep it real so that you don't expend a lot of time and effort into putting this in motion. I'd suggest that you ask if there are 25 BCers who are prepared to purchase a new Lakland, with a set simple spec i.e. metallic paint with maple board OR natural maple body with rosewood board. If people can't even sign up to that you'd save yourself some time. saying that if you are about to be mortgage free you may have loads of time on your hands Good luck
Hey, being mortgage free doesn't mean I'm stopping work...we've just been left a ridiculous amount of money following a family bereavement. We're twenty years into the mortgage and while we've been pretty prudent, our endowments aren't on track and we've been overpaying. It's been a nightmare to be honest. P
17.
Also, aren't the DPLE's ordered through an associated music store, so presumably someone's turning a bit of profit there too so if Lakland will deal direct with us, perhaps it might not cost quite as much and presumably the import tax needs only to be on the cost price not the full retail price.
As far as I know Steve Barr has had (or had) a very tight relationship with the guys at Lakland for some time, he was a bass trader and the basses he supplied as part of the DPLE range all went through him (if anyone else knows differently, please reply). Insofar as any particular model, specifications could be firmed up...it simply wouldn't have to be a DJ05 with a j-retro, because let's face it, you can get Skylines in this configuration off the shelf anyhow. P
18.
...he had a huge crowd of interested people around him at the time shows that it's still impressive to a lot of people...
A few years ago I was leaving a gig at the Astoria in London and saw a large crowd of people surrounding a couple of people who were having sex on some stairs leading into a building. It was about 11.00pm. I suppose a lot of people thought that this was particularly impressive, but it's not really something I want to see in public. P
19.
Statement of fact? Or your opinion?
Both P
20. I've followed Steve Barr's (Dudepit) activities for a while and got to thinking about these Skyline DPLE models he got going in recent years. He's mentioned previously that Lakland need (I think) 25 orders for a custom request model to be built and made available. As some of you know, in a couple of months I will be mortgage free (yay!) and will be looking to boost my bass armoury with a Lakky (or two) and got to thinking that why don't we try and commission a BCLE model? There certainly seems to be a few Lakland fans on this forum, but whether they'd be willing to part with £1,000+ for a bit of history is questionable though. I certainly wouldn't mind getting the ball rolling and make some preliminary enquiries to Lakland to find out their minimum order quantity is for a limited run. Seeing as how I thought of this (heh), my primary request would be that I get model #1 and that it would be for an edition of the DJ5, custom colour, but NO Dark Star pickups. Perhaps we could get John East in on the act to retrofit his superb retro units once they are in the country (this might also save on some tax and duty). I know there would certainly be a waiting period of six months or so, so there's no real rush...I know that they'd need a deposit on order. Anyone interested in doing this? P
21. Can I just make a straight remark here (and I'm not looking for a fight)? If this was a guitarist we'd all be saying it was a load of fretw*nk. I'm sorry, but that sort of playing is just drivel and it doesn't have any place in a musical sense. OK so the guy can do a lot of fancy tricks. Duh. And no, I can't 'play' like that, nor do I have any inclination to learn and do so either. If I actually had to listen to a musical track with that going on in the background I think I'd upchuck. P
22. I was having a looksie at the Sky listings for the next week or so and there's a show about John Entwistle on Biography (Channel 156) next Wednesday evening. Can't confirm the time...6.00pm I think. Not a big Ox fan to be honest, but he had (and destroyed) some great gear. P
23. I used to have a white Hamer Scarab bass (the guy from Def Leppard used to use one). It had a fantastic piano like tone, the thinnest neck I have ever played, but in hindsight, jeepers, what was I thinking? Some guy took it off my hands in a PX deal on a '79 Precision I'm still using seven or eight years ago. If anyone is interested in seeing this beauty, I can scan a photo in over the next day or two. P
24.
This looks a bit like Nicks (OHM's) old DJ5? If so give it a bit of time. I just bought one - a twin of this but black sparkle - hate it at the mo but will try and grow to love it. If not ignore the above and good look with the sale.
If it's a DJ5 and you still hate it around March/April, please send me a PM. Thankee P
