I don't know whether this counts as a bad gig or not... Quite a few years back I got roped into playing a short Sunday residency at a pub in Hackney. We got paid a pittance but on the upside we had access to unlimited beer and a nice Sunday roast. On the very last Sunday (and mid-set), there was some handbags over near the bar and then two fat guys started fighting, I swear I heard this guy's nose crack from the first punch (it still makes me wince thinking about it). Within seconds the whole place went off and there were maybe thirty people all beating the crap out of each other...it was like a scene from a Western, glasses were flying, someone was swinging a pool-cue around. I reckon it lasted under a minute and amazingly we kept playing. In hindsight it was hilarious, but at the time I was cacking my pants. Much love P X

I saw this on eBay a couple of weeks ago. It's a Fernandes Thunderbird - it's a lot like the old Spector Thunderbirds Nikki Sixx played in the late 80s. I used a product years ago called [b]Finger Ease[/b] - front and back of the neck. A couple of squirts and it worked fine until I got a sweat going and sticking wasn't a problem. No chemical smell or anything. It came in a little aerosol bottle and lasted for ages...no evidence of it damaging the fingerboard (or a polyurethane neck finish), although you might want to find out whether it would damage a nitro or oiled finished neck. Digital Village are doing it for £9.99 a can, but you can get it on eBay from the US a lot cheaper than buying it in the UK. Personally, I would avoid Fast Fret. It wasn't as 'thin' as Finger Ease and (roundwound) strings would collect muck after a session. Incidentally, my old guitarist used baby-wipes to get a little moisture on his strings before we started playing. P

Tim I only just came across this forum post and I'm amazed no one has even bothered to respond. This is a great link. I started out on Rotosound Swing bass strings (too long ago), then moved to Elites maybe ten years ago for a while and moved to D'Addarios five or six years back. While I've been pretty happy with the D'Adds, they sound great, last a while and boil up pretty well when near deado, I will probably source out some Elricks, Spectors or Mike Lull strings on t'bay within a few days. It's difficult to quantify my favourite band...I can follow my musical routes from The Sweet, Kiss, Rush, The Alarm, Living Colour, through to Shudder To Think, Jellyfish, Fountains Of Wayne and Counting Crows, but I have no definitive favourite. Showing my age here (and probably of more relevancy), I regularly go back to listening to four or five albums from my teens: Japan - Adolescent Sex and Obscure Alternatives (these are the first two Japan albums), bass player Mick Karn, Rich Kids - Ghosts Of Princes In Towers (Glen Matlock) Queen - Sheer Heart Attack (John Deacon) Aerosmith - Rocks (Tom Hamilton) Rocks was the album I used to play along with when I was starting out, waiting for Joe Perry to call me. Only recently have I come around to the feeling that I am not immortal and these albums are now all around thirty years old. To me these albums are like comfort food (Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey, or a cinnamon and raisin bagel with peanut-butter and banana). Hopefully, I'll still be around in thirty years... P

I've seen the Greasebucket thing mentioned...what is it? It's a toss-up between an MIJ Geddy Lee or a MIA Highway One Jazz (with the BadassII). Anyone playing a Highway One? Opinions? Also how is the nitro finish holding up? Cheers P Edit:: I've got a '79 Precision that has barely got a ding on it because of the finish...I'm querying the nitro finish simply from the perspective of how easily it'll ding and peel, rather than hunting down a forty year old bass or an artificially aged one.

I got the Argos one on Saturday and it's fine for the job - at a stretch it would even double as a stand for my combo as the platform is angled a few degrees off the vertical. It's actually for fishing equipment! P

I've got a pair of Ashdown boxes and the guitarist has a Marshall 4x12...you know, I never thought of looking in Argos! I'm off to the gym at midday...guess what's right next door? I don't want to go nuts here on the price and it doesn't need to be of world-tour quality, just good enough to transport anything up to a 4x12" sized cab about thirty metres. B&Q, Focus, whatever. Interesting you mention the MAG series amps...I run my Precision into a Mk1 BassPOD then into the effects return of an Ashdown MAG combo and a 1x15 deep bass cabinet. While I never have any issues when I actually start playing (I get a really nice Foxtonesque Tube Station clank from the POD patch I use) by the end of a two hour session the Ashdown does sound a bit farty, distorted and tired. It's never played flat out and there's always plenty of headroom. I've often thought this could be an issue with the amp as I've never had this 'problem' with the ramp of gear I've used previously. If the amp it switched off and cooled down (ten/fifteen minutes), it's fine again. P

I had a black non-export model for a while, sold on a couple of months ago. Aside from the scratchplate and bell-plate I see no difference to the export model. Incidentally, it was a peach for customising...changed the bridge to a BadAssII, the machines to Schaller and stuck in a John East pre-amp (also in black). On the downside, I had to rout out the back of the body to accommodate a battery box as the cavity wasn't big enough to take the John East and the battery. It sounded fantastic...maybe a little too big. The only thing I really didn't like about the model was that because it's of a more slab bodied design, there's a distinct lack of a proper chamfer under my right forearm. The body does fall way a little, but the edge can become a little hard on your forearm after extended session. If you're thinking of buying one, check eBay seller thomasldh - I got mine from him and he seems to deal solely in Aerodynes. He does 'em all, in all colours. Taking into account the weak $, he's pretty cheap now. P
